They are\u00a0<strong>ordinary people who made extraordinary choices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>They stopped waiting for the right moment and just left. They faced their fears, crossed deserts, met strangers and then decided to do it all over again, bringing others along with them. In this series,\u00a0<strong>WeRoad Group Leaders share how travel can change you<\/strong>, and why doing it together with others can make all the difference.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is <strong>Gustavo&#8217;s story<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>From delivering babies to leading groups across the world<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For years, Gustavo&#8217;s Christmas looked the same: scrubs on and delivery rooms. While the rest of the world gathered around a table, he was helping new lives come into it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, in 2024, <strong>he made a decision that surprised even himself<\/strong>. He left his job as a midwife, packed a bag, and set off to travel full-time with WeRoad. That same year, he spent Christmas in Argentina, under the stars, around a bonfire, with a group of strangers who became, for a few days, <strong>something like family<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what drives someone to walk away from a career like that and step into the unknown? We asked him.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>IDENTIKIT<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former Midwife, Full-time Group Leader<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Italy<\/li>\n<li>5 years as WeRoad Group Leader<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>How did you become a WeRoad Group Leader?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything started with a <strong>work-life puzzle<\/strong>. In 2019, having just moved to a new hospital, I was forced to take my holidays in the off-season, in October. Finding travel companions with the same availability was nearly impossible, so I decided to give WeRoad a try and booked a trip to Nepal. It was a revelation, a destination I probably would not have chosen on my own, and it allowed me to experience the WeRoad reality firsthand. Watching my Group Leader in action sparked an immediate connection with the role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the pandemic put everything on hold, and I was not old enough to apply yet anyway. But the idea never left me. As soon as I met the requirements in July 2021, I made my application video, passed the group interview, and after the bootcamp in October, I <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weroad.com\/become-group-leader\">became a WeRoad Group Leader<\/a><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"toc-is-there-a-moment-from-a-trip-that-you-still-see-when-you-close-your-eyes-3\"><strong>Is there a moment from a trip that you still see when you close your eyes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two moments stand out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first was in February 2024, at the beginning of what I call my pivot year &#8211; the year I left my stable job as a midwife to travel full-time. I was in Varanasi, India, during a Rajasthan tour. I had organised a surprise ritual on the Ganges for two participants celebrating their birthday. Surrounded by chanting, incense and the sacred atmosphere of the river, the priest performed a personal blessing for me, acknowledging the new path I was embarking on. The three of us just looked at each other and wept. It was a <strong>moment of pure, overwhelming connection<\/strong> and it perfectly marked the beginning of my new life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second happened recently in Japan, near Mount Fuji. The mountain had been completely hidden by clouds all day. We had accepted our fate when, while sitting at a coffee bar, one of my participants ran inside shouting: &#8220;<em>It&#8217;s out! Come quick!<\/em>&#8221; We turned the corner, and there it was, fully snow-capped, clear as a postcard. <strong>We screamed as if we had won the lottery<\/strong> and abandoned everything just to stand there, mesmerised. One moment deeply spiritual, one of pure spontaneous joy. Those are the reasons I do this.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"toc-what-really-changes-when-you-travel-with-people-you-dont-know-4\"><strong>What really changes when you travel with people you don\u2019t know?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travelling with strangers is, in many ways, less risky than travelling with long-time friends. Friendships have dynamics built over years, and changing the context can put them to the test. With strangers, <strong>you start from scratch<\/strong>, it is a game of balances where <strong>you are free to present yourself without the weight of past expectations<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you are a participant, this gives you incredible <strong>freedom<\/strong>. When you are a coordinator, expectations shift dramatically: people tend to see you as an almost omniscient reference point. The real challenge is managing that perception, remembering that no one can control the unpredictable. But the real magic happens when, among sixteen strangers, you find those kindred spirits who stay in your life long after the trip ends.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"toc-what-does-a-group-leader-do-that-travellers-never-see-5\"><strong>What does a Group Leader do that travellers never see?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to explain this is through a moment from a 2023 trip in Japan. A participant once remarked that the trip seemed &#8220;simple&#8221; and that my role was just basic support. I did not have to say a word, two veteran WeRoad travellers immediately stepped in: &#8220;<em>You don&#8217;t notice anything because everything runs smoothly precisely because he works his tail off behind the scenes<\/em>.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That phrase stayed with me. It is the essence of what we do: when everything goes perfectly, it means we have done our job well. The <strong>seamless itinerary, the timing, the best local spots<\/strong>: none of it is luck. It is constant planning, research and experience. A Group Leader is not just a guide. We are <strong>logistical architects<\/strong>, and the invisible work is everything.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>You spent years working Christmas shifts in the delivery room. What did you find in travel that your job could not give you?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travel has always been my greatest passion, but looking back, I realise that for a long time it was also my way of escaping. In the delivery room, I had the honour of helping mothers bring new life into the world on Christmas Day. During my sabbatical year, I led a group through Argentina over the holidays. The contexts are vastly different, but I see a deep affinity: in both cases, my mission is to take someone by the hand and <strong>guide them through an experience that might shape them forever<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a Group Leader, I feel the same responsibility I felt as a midwife, the need to be a steady reference point in a meaningful moment. I have learned that <strong>where you are matters far less than who you are with<\/strong>. He traded night shifts for bonfires under the stars, and delivery rooms for the banks of the Ganges.
