Itinerary
Ready for an epic adventure in China? This journey promises to be unforgettable as we explore the wonders of this thousand-year-old country and uncover its most authentic facets: from the Great Wall, the quintessential symbol of the ancient empire, to the avant-garde metropolises of Shanghai and Beijing, where towering skyscrapers stand alongside ancient traditional buildings, as well as the country’s most stunning natural landscapes.
We will embark on an exploration of the Great Wall, a stone serpent stretching for thousands of kilometers, and we will feel like true explorers. Our journey will take us to the Zhangjiajie Mountains, the inspiration for the movie Avatar: here, we will walk among rock spires that seem to rise from a dream, suspended between heaven and earth. But China offers so much more: in Chengdu, nestled in the heart of nature, we will meet the friendly giant pandas, adorable yet somewhat lazy creatures that inhabit nature reserves. We will also visit traditional villages like Furong, where time seems to stand still, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the daily lives of Chinese farmers.
We’ll make a stop to see the immense Terracotta Army, and then we’ll reach the bustling cities: first Beijing, with its ancient temples, the Forbidden City, and Tiananmen Square, followed by Shanghai, a modern metropolis that gazes confidently toward the future.

Welcome to China!
1 night: Beijing
Check-in: Our adventure begins in Beijing!
Round trip flights are not included in the package, so you can choose from where and when you want to fly. This is to give you maximum freedom of choice!
Check in at the hotel in Beijing and meet the rest of your group! We are in the capital of China, a city rich in ancient history while also being incredibly modern. For dinner, how about we try some Chinese delicacies? We could have spaghetti with soy sauce, Peking chicken, fried tofu, and the delicious jiaozi (Chinese dumplings) – a cuisine that satisfies all palates! Let's toast to the beginning of our adventure with some baijiu, a famous liquor loved by the people of Beijing. Tomorrow, the real journey begins, and we are so excited!

The Great Wall of China
1 night: Beijing
One of the seven wonders of the world
The Great Wall awaits us! We will reach one of the access points and walk along a stone snake that winds for kilometers, with the wind in our hair and our gaze lost on the horizon. It is said that the Wall was built to protect China from invaders, but today it stands as a symbol of unity and national pride.
Let’s put on our comfortable shoes and get ready to uncover its secrets: watchtowers, hidden passages, and breathtaking views. We will feel the rush of adrenaline and the satisfaction of reaching such an ambitious goal!

Beijing: From the Forbidden City to Beihai Park
1 night: Beijing
Discovering the capital
We are going to enjoy this day in Beijing: we need to discover all its secrets and hidden corners! This morning, we’ll immerse ourselves in history and imperial culture as we set off to explore the Temple of Heaven, an architectural masterpiece where the emperors prayed for a good harvest, and the Summer Palace, a peaceful haven with breathtaking gardens and elegant pavilions—we will feel like the protagonists of a period film!
In the afternoon, an even bigger adventure awaits us: the Forbidden City. We will explore sumptuous palaces, secret gardens, and vast courtyards where emperors once roamed. Did you know that the Forbidden City has over 9,000 rooms? And that it takes days to see it all? We will definitely try to see the best parts! Afterward, we will climb the hill of Jingshan Park for a breathtaking view: from here, the Forbidden City appears as a jewel set in the city. To end the day on a high note, we will relax in Beihai Park, an oasis of peace in the heart of Beijing. Here, we can rent a pedal boat and take a ride on the lake, admiring the White Pagoda and the Nine-Dragon Wall.

From Beijing to Pingyao
1 night: Pingyao
The charm of Ancient China
This morning, we still have some time to take a walk around Beijing: let’s make the most of these hours to visit what we missed yesterday or pick up some souvenirs—although, it must be said, it might be a bit early to fill our backpacks! After lunch, we will board a train that will take us from modern Beijing to the more traditional Pingyao, a town that still retains the charm of ancient China.
Pingyao, a hidden gem in Shanxi Province, will reveal the most authentic side of China. We will stroll through its streets, admire its temples, and savor the relaxed atmosphere: after yesterday spent in the chaos of Beijing, we will feel like we are in a completely new country. Pingyao is nicknamed "the city of red lanterns"—we will experience this tonight as we walk through the streets illuminated by thousands of lanterns while we decide on the perfect place for dinner: our goal is, of course, to taste a good local dish and enjoy the evening in great company.

Discovering Pingyao
1 night: Xi'an
Pingyao - a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We have the entire day to dedicate to discovering Pingyao, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city is famous for having remained unchanged for over a thousand years: we can still see the medieval walls intact, along with many shops and wooden houses that still feature the typical design of the Ming era. We cannot miss a stroll along Ming-Qing Street: here, we will truly feel like we have arrived in real China. We will find the shop with the strangest artisan products and then locate a small restaurant for lunch—the atmosphere will certainly be just right!
We will let ourselves be enveloped by the sound of temple bells and the voices of street vendors. The air will be filled with intense scents: incense, tea, and delicious local delicacies. As we walk through the streets, we can listen to the stories of the locals and taste typical Chinese dishes. We will have time until mid-afternoon to explore this little gem before catching the train that will take us to Xi'an: tomorrow, new adventures await us!

Discovering Xi'an
1 night: Chengdu
An extraordinary culture
We arrived in Xi'an yesterday evening, probably feeling tired—but today we are energized to discover this new face of China. We will let ourselves be enchanted by the magical atmosphere of this city, rich in history and mystery, which is home to one of the most fascinating works of the human race: the Terracotta Army—a sight that will undoubtedly leave us speechless. Thousands of terracotta warriors, each with a unique expression, seem to have stepped right out of a movie. They were discovered by chance by farmers digging a well—it sounds like the start of a joke, but it’s a true story!
After being amazed all morning, we’ll have the afternoon to relax and stroll around Xi'an. We can find some peace at the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, an oasis of serenity in the heart of the city, before catching a late afternoon train to Chengdu!

Chengdu: Home of the Giant Pandas!
1 night: Chongqing
One of the world's food capitals
Chengdu is the Chinese city renowned worldwide for its delicious cuisine and, above all, for being the home of giant pandas. After breakfast, we will venture out of the city center to meet these adorable little bears: we can watch them as they play, sleep, or maybe even embark on some funny adventures. Don’t forget your camera: pandas are famous for their unexpected acrobatics!
But Chengdu is not just about pandas: this city has been recognized by UNESCO as one of the world’s food capitals. Let’s get ready for an explosion of flavors: spicy dishes, intense aromas, and surprising combinations await us. We will arm ourselves with chopsticks, prepare our palates (yes, they love spicy food here), and get ready to explore this culinary side of China. In the evening, we’ll move again… guess what?! We have a train to catch, headed for Chongqing!

A stroll in Chongqing and on the way to Furong
1 night: Furong
The last train of the journey!
Today, we wake up in Chongqing, a city that will truly amaze us. Here, we will find ultramodern skyscrapers rising alongside ancient temples and historical districts. We won’t miss Ciqikou, an ancient district filled with traditional houses, craft shops, and restaurants. Unfortunately, we can’t stay long in Chongqing because a new train awaits us—but I promise, it’s the last one we will take during this trip! We are heading toward one of the highlights of our journey: Furong and the Avatar Mountains!

Tianmen Mountain: from hidden villages to heavenly peaks
1 night: Zhangjiajie
Tianmen Mountain: from hidden villages to heavenly peaks
Good morning, adventurers! This morning, our journey continues as we leave the charming village of Furong and head toward the awe-inspiring Tianmen Mountain, home to the legendary Heaven’s Gate. Standing beneath the massive natural arch of Heaven’s Gate, you'll feel the thrill of one of China's most iconic landscapes—where legends say the earth meets the sky and every step is steeped in ancient mystery.
After soaking in the breathtaking views and walking the thrilling glass skywalk, we’ll make our way to Zhangjiajie, where we’ll settle in for the night—ready to dream of floating mountains and sky-high adventures.

Zhangjiajie and the Avatar Mountains
1 night: Shanghai
Immersed in nature
After a hearty breakfast today is ours to explore the legendary Avatar Mountains. We will immediately immerse ourselves in the magical atmosphere of the place: the Avatar Mountains, with their towering spires and lush forests, will welcome us, making us feel like we are in the movie.
After spending a few hours in the park, a transfer awaits us to take us to the airport: we have a flight to catch, heading to Shanghai!

Shanghai: Skyscrapers and Millenary Traditions
1 night: Shanghai
Last day of travel: Shanghai and the Bund
Finally, Shanghai! This morning, we head straight to the Old City, a labyrinth of narrow streets and traditional houses. We will visit the Yu Yuan Garden, a jewel of Chinese landscape architecture, featuring its beautiful pavilions, ponds, and bridges. Afterward, we can get lost among the little shops of the Old City, searching for unique souvenirs.
To end the day on a high note, we can hop aboard a cruise on the Huangpu River and admire the illuminated skyline of the city from a different perspective, sipping a cocktail and enjoying some appetizers—a fitting conclusion to this incredible trip that we shared and will likely remember for the rest of our lives.

For this itinerary, you can choose the type of luggage you prefer – we always recommend a backpack, but you can also travel with a duffel bag, a holdall, or (it breaks our heart to say it) a cabin trolley case or a checked suitcase, as long as it’s moderate in size. About China
If you are a UK citizen, to find out the entry requirements for China, you can check this informational page from our partner Sherpa. If you need a visa, you can apply for it through Sherpa. If you are not a UK citizen, you can still use Sherpa by changing the nationality in the 'Passport' section.
Before traveling, always remember to check the government website of your country of origin for updates on the entry requirements for China – you wouldn’t want to stay home due to a bureaucratic detail!
- UK residents: review the FCDO Travel Advice.
- US residents: consult the US Department of State Travel Advice.
- Other residents: refer to your government or local consulate's travel advice.
China operates on China Standard Time, which is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. It does not observe daylight saving time. If it is 12pm in the UK, it will be 8pm in China. If it is 12pm in New York, USA, it will be 1am the next day in China. Keep this in mind when planning your calls or travel arrangements.
China's currency is the Chinese Yuan Renminbi (CNY or RMB). The daily exchange rate can vary, but as a rough guide:
- 1 GBP is about 8.8 CNY
- 1 USD is around 7.3 CNY
- 1 EUR is approximately 7.9 CNY
To exchange currency, you can visit banks, currency exchange counters at airports, or authorized hotels. Always check for the current rates before exchanging money.
In China, the most common payment methods are mobile payment apps like Alipay and WeChat Pay. You can also use credit and debit cards, especially in larger cities and tourist areas. Cash is still widely accepted, but it's becoming less common in urban areas. It's a good idea to download Alipay or WeChat Pay before you go, as they are widely used for everything from shopping to street food. Make sure your card is enabled for international use if you plan to use it.
Tipping is not a common practice in China and is often not expected. In most restaurants, hotels, and taxis, you won't need to tip. However, in some high-end places or those catering to international tourists, tips might be appreciated. If you feel the service was exceptional and you want to tip, a small token of appreciation is fine, but it is not necessary. Remember, if you do decide to tip, it’s always best to hand it directly to the person to ensure they receive it.
Internet access in China can be a bit different than what you're used to. Many popular Western websites and apps are restricted. Wi-Fi is available in major cities, hotels, cafes, and airports, but connections can be slow and unreliable.
For more stable and unrestricted access, we suggest you buy a local SIM card or an e-SIM data plan. Providers like China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom offer various data packages. Just make sure your phone is unlocked before purchasing a local SIM.
In China, the official language is Mandarin Chinese. It's spoken by the majority of the population and is used in government and media. Here are some useful colloquial expressions you might hear or use:
- Hello: Nǐ hǎo (你好)
- Thank you: Xièxiè (谢谢)
- How much: Duōshǎo qián (多少钱)
- Yes: Shì (是)
- No: Bù shì (不是)
These phrases can be handy while traveling around the country.
In China, the power plugs and sockets mainly used are type A, C, and I. The standard voltage is 220 V, and the frequency is 50 Hz. Since these plugs might differ from those used in Europe or the USA, we recommend you bring a universal adapter to ensure all your devices can be charged during your stay. This way, you will be prepared for any plug type you encounter.
China does not have a single main religion, but rather a mix of several belief systems. The most practiced include Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. It’s important to note that religious freedom is constitutionally protected, but the practice of religion is subject to government regulation. Important religious holidays include the Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival, which are widely celebrated across the country.

About WeRoad
Round-trip flights are not included in any of our trips because we like to give you autonomy and flexibility: you can choose the airline you want to fly with, the departure airport that suits you best, and how many and which stops you want to make.
Since flights are not included, you also have more flexibility with your travel dates: if possible, you can arrive at your destination a few days earlier or return home a bit later – or even continue independently to a nearby destination!
This is the question of all questions, and here’s the answer, broken down into points!
The Money Pot is a common fund collected in local currency from all tour participants and managed by your Travel Coordinator.
It is used to streamline paymentsfor extra activities, goods and services that the whole group decides to do and to guarantee flexibility in choosing activities and excursions at the destination in line with the mood of the group.
It is typically collected on the first day of the trip in local currency, although at times, the Travel Coordinator may ask for it to be paid before departure.
You’ll find the amount of the money pot on the website under the section ‘What’s included in the money pot’ – how do you get there? Look for ‘What’s included’, scroll down to ‘Money pot? Click here’, and you’ll find the details.
The amount varies depending on the destination chosen.
It is used exclusively for group expenses that ALL participants decide to take part in.
It is estimated based on the experiences of other groups but can vary depending on the needs of the group itself. As such, the Travel Coordinator may need to increase the amount during the trip.
If not all of the money pot is used, the difference will be returned to all participants at the end of the trip in equal amounts.
The Money Pot also covers the Travel Coordinator’s share of the activities included in the money pot, except for those activities that are free for the Travel Coordinator.
If you pay in advance part of the money pot before the trip for certain non-refundable optional activities, unfortunately, the amount cannot be refunded in case of trip cancellation.
We offer several payment methods to fit every need:
1. Credit or prepaid card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express);
2. Instalment payment with Scalapay up to €4,999 (only available with the “Full trip payment” option – not available with the “Deposit and balance” option; pay in 3 instalments up to €1,200 or in 4 instalments over €1,200);
3. PayPal (for selected destinations);
4. Revolut Pay to pay even faster straight from your Revolut account;
5. Welfare credit – BEFORE BOOKING, reach out to us at [email protected].
If you choose the deposit and balance option, you’ll also be able to pay the balance via bank transfer from your Personal Area.
Anyone who books a WeRoad trip has the option to cancel or modify the trip – including both the dates and the destination – free of charge up to 31 days before departure. In case of cancellation, you will receive a 100% refund of the WeRoad trip price. (Deposits will be refunded in the form of a gift card valid for 365 days from issue date.) If you make a change, a price adjustment will be applied to the new trip chosen – meaning, if the new trip is cheaper, we will refund the difference; if it’s more expensive, you will need to pay the difference.
If you’ve purchased the Flexible Cancellation Option (which you can add in the first step of the booking process), you can request a cancellation or trip change until 8 days before departure. In case of cancellation, you’ll receive a 100% refund of the WeRoad trip price, minus the cost of the Flexible Cancellation option. Deposits will be refunded in the form of a gift card valid for 365 days from issue date.
How to request a cancellation or change to your trip? Send us an email at [email protected] or a WhatsApp on +447716573700. Please share the booking reference for the trip you want to cancel or change, and, in case of a change, the new trip you would like to join.
In general, we always choose local accommodations, avoiding large hotel chains, because we love to experience the culture of the place and, whenever possible, contribute to the local economy. Typically, our accommodations are hotels, apartments, guesthouses, and hostels run by local entrepreneurs, with the same standard maintained across all trips in the same destination.
For our Collection trips, which are our premium category, the accommodations are always 4 or 5-star or carefully selected boutique hotels.
The list of accommodations for your trip will be shared with you by your Travel Coordinator between 5 and 3 days before departure, along with other useful details for your adventure!
If you're wondering why WeRoad trips have a money pot, we’re assuming you already know what it is. If not, or if you have any doubts, we invite you to read all the information here!
Let’s quickly recap: The Money Pot is a common fund collected in local currency from all tour participants and managed by your Travel Coordinator. It’s used to speed up payments for extra activities, goods and services that the whole group decides to do and to guarantee flexibility in choosing activities and excursions at the destination in line with the mood of the group.
But let’s get to the point: why the money pot? First of all: it gives us a lot of flexibility. In all WeRoad trips you will have a bunch of Must See/Must Do activities already included - these are experiences, places or activities that simply cannot be missed! Any extra activities is decided by the group, why? Because each group is unique and may have particular wants or desires and the Money Pot allows each group to customise their trip to make it perfect for their requirements!
It also helps us speed up payments – imagine being in the subway in New York City, one by one purchasing the ticket...a nightmare right? Thanks to the Money Pot, the Travel Coordinator can simply purchase the tickets for everyone making the entire processes smoother! Any leftover money will be returned at the end of the trip and split equally amongst all participants.
In some destinations, buying goods or services on site is more economical as you are able to negotiate the price - places like Morocco, or South East Asia, bargaining is part of the culture. As such, our Travel Coordinators will be able to secure the best deal for all participants.
The amount of the money pot is specified in each trip – look for this button
which will take you to a detailed breakdown for each trip, like this:
Even if we don't know the flights of all WeRoaders, there are several ways to find out which flights your travel companions have purchased.
1. Each WeRoader has the ability to communicate their flight details after booking within their personal area so that other travel companions can see the details anonymously. Enter your booking and you will find this section:
[Screenshot]
2. If you want to find out before booking, instead, you can contact us and we will support you in your search or you can ask your travel companions for direct information by joining our Facebook group 'WeRoad... let's get to know each other before leaving! (official)' – (here is the extended link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/weroadit) look for a post associated with your trip, or ask the group administrators for help in getting in touch with your future adventure companions!
If the coordinator has already been assigned to the trip you are interested in, you can easily find his/her presentation post in the group through the site: in the shift list click on 'Ask the coordinator', or in the trip tab, in the coordinator section, click on 'Ask [coordinator name] about this shift in our Facebook group'. For both cases, see the screenshots below!

In all our groups, the Travel Coordinator and participants speak English – knowing how to speak and understand English is therefore a fundamental requirement to participate in our trips.
On average the groups are made up of 6-15 people, with a minimum of 3/4 participants and a maximum of 15.
All our travellers are in theirs 20s, 30s and 40s. If you're very curious to know the age range of the group for a tour you're interested in, you can see this by finding the trip on our website, and clicking the down arrow to see the ages & genders of participants. You'll need to have created a WeRoad account with us to do this.
Any issues finding this info just give our team in the office a call, we're always happy to help!
Regarding the male-female ratio, this is not guaranteed and varies trip by trip.
Yes! If you're curious, you can take a sneak peek at the group before booking – although, in our opinion, that kind of spoils the surprise! You’ll find the info in the ‘Group’ section for each trip on the departures page, showing how many WeRoaders have already booked. Click the little arrow and you’ll even see their gender and ages – but hey, that’s exclusive info, so we’ll ask you to log in or sign up to see that!
The WeRoad Travel Coordinator is an experienced and skilled traveller and will be the perfect companion for your trip. They will be available for any eventuality and will manage all the logistical aspects of the itinerary (transports, timings, accommodations, meeting points, etc.), so you can enjoy the trip without any worries!
You will have the chance to get to know them when the WhatsApp group is created approximately 2 weeks before departure - this will be the moment to ask any pre-departure questions and get to know the rest of the group! If the trip you are interested in already has a Travel Coordinator assigned, you can contact them before booking – their details will be specified in the schedule or on the trip page, or you can search for their name here. After booking, you will find their contact details in your Personal Area, under ‘Bookings and Trips’ > ‘Your Upcoming Trips’ > ‘Trip Details’.
Yes, in all our trips you will share a room with other same-sex travellers, and the bathroom will either be private or shared only with fellow participants of the trip. The rooms we select can be doubles, triples, quadruples, or multi-bed (up to 8 people in exceptional cases), depending on the destination and availability.
There are never dorms with people outside the WeRoad group, except in certain cases for local experiences, which are specifically mentioned in the itinerary or communicated before booking. These typically involve specific nights in unique accommodations like tents, homestays, or camping, offering a more adventurous travel experience in exchange for some comfort.
During the booking process, you can also choose to opt for a mixed room: in this case, if needed, only those who have agreed to this option may share a room with travellers of a different sex. If you are booking for multiple people together and select this option, the room will not be exclusive to your group but may be shared with other travellers in the group.
When you set off on a WeRoad trip, you’re officially a WeRoader – and as we often say, 'Once a WeRoader, always a WeRoader'. This means that once you’re part of the community, a little piece of WeRoad will always stay with you, even if you no longer travel with us.
But you’re not just a WeRoader during your trips, far from it! The community is alive and active all year round: you can stay in touch by following and interacting on our social media channels, like the Facebook group or the Instagram profile. We can also meet up for a dinner or a trek together at one of the events organised by our coordinators around the world!
