Itinerary

There's just one rule to join this group trip: forget your shoes! From now on, our mantra will be: flip-flops, flip-flops everywhere! Even though Brazil is a huge country, it's hard not to start a trip without passing through the vibrant, chaotic, unique Rio de Janeiro, a cidade maravilhosa!

Rio is a captivating city that has it all: ocean, forest, skyscrapers, miles of beaches, picturesque neighborhoods, favelas, museums, and botanical gardens. Everything is here, and it's from this incomparable city that we'll kick off our Brazilian adventure: we'll spend the first 3 nights in Rio, giving us enough time to explore the city's main attractions before flying north to the state of Maranhao, and more precisely to Sao Luis. Here, we'll finally be in Northern Brazil, where white sand dunes dominate the landscape: we'll journey through the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, the Preguicas River, Barra Grande, and then relax for a few days in Jericoacoara, also known as the

Welcome to Rio

Flights to and from Italy are not included in the package, so you can decide where to fly from, at what time, and with the airline you prefer... This is to give you maximum freedom of choice. To find out when the meeting with the rest of the group is, click here!

Check-in at the hotel in Rio de Janeiro and welcome meeting, here's how the meeting works! Our adventure kicks off in the capital, and we'll immediately soak up the festive vibe in the city streets: to start with a bang, we'll find a typical restaurant and tuck into some local specialties. They're big on meat here, so... picanha?

Relax
Through the streets of Rio

We're spending our second day in Brazil exploring Rio. With our local guide, we'll discover the most famous neighborhoods before heading to the Metropolitan Cathedral, the colorful Selarón Steps (we'll add our names to the mural too, right?), the Sambadrome, and finishing with Christ the Redeemer, the undisputed icon of this vibrant city and one of the seven wonders of the modern world. We'll head all the way to the top and soak in the panoramic views – of course, we'll take plenty of time for selfies and group photos!

Caught up in the rhythm!

In the afternoon, we move to another iconic spot in Rio instead: we take the Bondinho cable car and reach Pão de Açùcar, Rio's symbolic mountain. We admire the city from a different perspective, with Copacabana (perhaps the most famous beach in the world) on one side, and the center of Rio on the other. We stay here until sunset, when everything becomes even more magical, and then we head down into the city streets to soak up the carioca rhythm, exploring bars and clubs.

City and cultures
All about the beach... and what a beach!

After partying like true Cariocas, we dedicate this day to chilling out. How about Ipanema, one of Rio's most beautiful beaches, which mirrors the diverse character of Carioca society, with wide tree-lined avenues and outdoor bars where the samba rhythm never stops? Or we could go for Copacabana, Rio's most famous beach and one of the best-known in the world. If the beach isn't really your vibe, we could opt for a tour of the Rocinha favela: with its 300,000 inhabitants, it's the largest favela in the world. It was built in a chaotic way – that's an understatement, obviously – on a steep hill in Rio de Janeiro's "Zona Sul".

We asked ourselves: why visit a favela like Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro? Is it simple human voyeurism? Is it right to do so, or is it better to stay confined within the tourist-friendly bubble of beaches, samba clubs, and monuments? Our answer is: you go to Rocinha to break free from prejudice, to truly understand what daily life is like in a favela and how the favela itself is structured. And it's right to go because, thanks to the work of many associations, the visit becomes a gesture of solidarity.

Welcome to São Luís!

Goodbye Rio! This morning we wake up in Rio, but tonight we'll be sleeping in São Luís: we have a flight to catch! From São Luís, in the Maranhão region, our journey along the coast of northern Brazil begins: we'll use every means possible – literally – until we reach Fortaleza, and our drivers will take us along paths both known and unknown – often we'll find ourselves crossing endless sand dunes stretching to the horizon! In São Luís, we'll warm up the engines and start getting to know the local culture!

The Brazilian Jamaica

Let's take a stroll through the historic center of São Luís: the pastel-colored colonial houses and cobblestone streets make the neighborhood incredibly picturesque. After dinner, we can go celebrate at one of the city's spots – the music that's most popular here is reggae, so much so that São Luís is also known as the "Brazilian Jamaica".

Lençóis Maranhenses. Here we come!

Out of bed, our road trip starts today! Let's hop in the jeeps: get ready to admire postcard-perfect landscapes out the window that'll make us want to stop every ten minutes! After about 4 hours of driving, we arrive in Barreirinhas, a town that will be our base for excursions in the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.

The "sheets" of sand of Lagoa Bonita

After a quick lunch, we can’t wait to see the incredible magic of this park’s landscape with our own eyes: rainwater lagoons surrounded by white sand dunes that look like unfurled sheets – hence the name “lencois” which means, precisely, sheets. After the morning spent driving, it’s the perfect time to take a dip in the most famous lagoon and, according to everyone, the most beautiful one: Lagoa Bonita. After our swim, we’ll head back to Barreirinhas and pick a spot that inspires us for dinner – the same goes for after dinner, of course!

Nature and adventure
Relax
Water and... air!

This morning's excursion takes us to explore the mouth of the Rio Preguiças and the small fishing villages that dot its banks. From our boat, we'll be able to admire the 'small Lençóis' - slightly less high dunes, but definitely no less fascinating! After our boat trip, we'll head back to Barreirinhas just in time to grab a bite, and then, for those who fancy it, there's the option to hop on a helicopter and fly over the Park to admire the 'sheets' in all their glory – we think it's totally worth it! From the ground, you really can't grasp how spectacular these lagoons among the dunes are, creating a landscape that's truly one-of-a-kind.

Nature and adventure
On the road to Parnaiba

We say goodbye to Barreirinhas and head towards Parnaiba: a picturesque colonial city built around the river delta of the same name. We can't miss exploring this delta of 73 islands rich in native vegetation and fauna. We reach Tutoia where a boat trip awaits us through the stunning mangroves of the Parnaiba Delta to observe the 'Guaras Swarm' (bright red birds typical of these areas), iguanas, caimans, and monkeys. We are in the third largest delta in the world – after the Nile and the Mekong – which flows directly into the ocean.

Back on dry land, we enjoy the evening, perhaps at Porto das Barcas on the banks of the Rio Igaracu, a former 19th-century commercial port area that now hosts restaurants, shops, and local crafts!

On the road through the dunes!

Another day, another transfer! We hop back in the minivan and from Paraniba, we travel along dirt and paved roads until we reach Tatajuba, a lagoon village where we stop for lunch. Here we'll feast on super fresh grilled fish served with a nice cold beer – and after lunch, we can take a siesta swaying in one of the many hammocks by the shore.

Jeri, sunsets & caipirinhas!

We’re back on the road – if we can even call it that! – and heading to our final destination, Jericoacoara, just in time for sunset. We’ll race straight to the Duna Por Do Sol, which is usually pretty crowded at this hour: everyone wants to see the sun “swallowed” by the ocean, and we’ll definitely have a front-row seat. If we’re super lucky, we might even witness the rare green flash phenomenon, a flicker that lasts a few milliseconds and appears the instant the sun disappears over the horizon. And to top it all off, we’ll enjoy this spectacle with a delicious caipirinha in hand! Right on the beach (and even up on the dune!), you’ll find various stalls making them to suit every taste – pick your favorite fruit and toast to the adventure we’re living! We’ll continue the evening in the town center: Jeri is buzzing, vibrant, and full of little bars and young surfers! For dinner, street food is a must, and then it’s off to explore Jeri’s nightlife with its beach bars, live music venues, and reggae bars to keep us going until late!

Horseback riding, kite surfing or...

Good morning Jeri! Good morning Jeri! – yes, because nobody here says the full Jericoacoara, and we’re following tradition – saving ourselves any pronunciation blunders!

Let’s leave the shoes and flip-flops at home, we can walk barefoot here: the streets are literally made of sand! We have a free day and can spend it however we like: options include a horseback ride along the sea, relaxing on the beach, a kite surfing lesson – this is home to some of the most famous kite surfing schools in the world! Or, what we recommend, an excursion to the park’s lagoons (besides raiding the super-stocked Havaianas shop!).

...still lagoons?

If the last option excites us, we hop into the dune buggies (small open-top cars perfect for driving through the dunes) and let our expert driver guide us first to Lagoa Azul and then to Lagoa Paraiso – in both places, we’ll find the traditional hammocks right by the water, so we can relax in the sun and then cool off with a refreshing dip. We’ll wrap up the day with another postcard-perfect sunset: today we’re off to Pedra Furada, which literally means “pierced rock”. Some rock formations on the beach have a hole in them, and the magic happens when the sun, setting over the ocean, aligns perfectly with the hole in the rocks. Don’t forget your cameras because this is a moment to capture! Another day, another adventure! Tonight, we’ll pick a nice little spot with just the right vibe and enjoy Jeri’s specialties. Or, for those craving something different, there are plenty of Italian, Japanese, and Mexican restaurants here too: basically, Jeri has something for everyone! And after a hearty dinner, who could say no to some Brazilian energy?

Still Jeri!

We have one last day to soak up this little slice of paradise. Today is all ours to do whatever we haven't managed to fit in over the past few days. There are so many lagoons to explore, and we can spend the hours swimming in the crystal-clear waters or simply basking in the sun, perhaps swaying in a hammock to the rhythm of the breeze – all while sipping a refreshing cocktail. If we haven't already, let's take advantage of being here to try a kitesurfing lesson and, to top it all off, watch the sunset on horseback. A moment we won't easily forget!

Back to civilization!

Let's say “goodbye” to this paradise: today we head to Fortaleza, the final stop of our road trip in Northern Brazil. We’ll have lunch along the way, again with some fish and a beer (or why not, a delicious caipirinha, since they make them really well here!) and we'll arrive in the city. It will feel strange returning to “civilization” after so many days spent among the dunes, walking barefoot on the sand. But we have a solution for today too: an aperitif with a caipirinha, how does that sound? This evening, our last dinner together awaits us to relive every moment of this adventure. And for after dinner? Let's find a bar to let loose to the rhythm of samba!

Check-out and goodbyes
Saying goodbye is the hardest part of any trip: but we know we'll meet again very soon on the roads of the world.

About this trip

What are the meeting and departure details for this trip?

This journey begins at Rio de Janeiro. On the first day, we meet at 18:00.

Your Coordinator will add you to the WhatsApp group for your trip about 15 days before departure.
 It’s a great way to start getting to know your travel mates, receive more details about the first day’s meeting point, and ask any pre-departure questions you might have.

This journey ends at Fortaleza. On the last day, you are free to leave at any time, so whether you need to book a flight, a train, or wish to continue the journey on your own, you can organize your return as you prefer.

What kind of luggage can I bring with me on this trip?

For this itinerary, you can choose the type of luggage you prefer – we always recommend a backpack, but you can also travel with a duffel bag, a holdall, or (it breaks our heart to say it) a cabin trolley case or a checked suitcase, as long as it’s moderate in size. Our Travel Coordinator will suggest the ideal luggage before departure in the WhatsApp group!

About Brazil

What are the entry requirements for Brazil?

Find out the entry requirements for Brazil, and, if needed, apply for your visa through our partner Sherpa.

Before traveling, always remember to check the government website of your country of origin for updates on the entry requirements for Brazil – you wouldn’t want to stay home due to a bureaucratic detail!

What's the time zone in Brazil?

Brazil covers multiple time zones, so it varies depending on where you are:

  • Brasília Time (BRT): This is the most common, and it's 3 hours behind GMT. If it's 12pm in the UK, it will be 9am in Brasília. For the USA, if it's 12pm EST, it will be 2pm in Brasília.
  • Amazon Time (AMT): 4 hours behind GMT. If it's 12pm in the UK, it's 8am in Manaus. For the USA, if it's 12pm EST, it will be 1pm in Manaus.
  • Fernando de Noronha Time (FNT): This is 2 hours behind GMT. If it's 12pm in the UK, it will be 10am in Fernando de Noronha. For the USA, if it's 12pm EST, it will be 3pm there.

Note that Brazil does not currently observe daylight saving time.

Which currency is used in Brazil?

Brazil uses the Brazilian Real (BRL) as its currency. The exchange rate can fluctuate, but as a rough guide, 1 GBP is about 7 BRL, 1 USD is around 5 BRL, and 1 EUR is approximately 6 BRL. You can exchange currency at banks, exchange bureaus, and some hotels in major cities. It's always a good idea to compare rates and fees to get the best deal.

How can I pay in Brazil?

In Brazil, you can use credit cards, debit cards, and cash for most transactions. Credit and debit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard, are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas. However, it's always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller establishments or markets where cards might not be accepted. ATMs are available for cash withdrawals, but check with your bank about international transaction fees. Mobile payments like Apple Pay and Google Pay are also becoming more common. Remember to inform your bank of your travel plans to avoid any issues with card usage.

Do I need to tip in Brazil?

In Brazil, tipping is not mandatory, but it is appreciated. Service charges are often included in the bill at restaurants, typically around 10 percent. If it's not included, you might want to leave a tip of the same amount if you’re happy with the service. For other services like taxis or hotel staff, rounding up the fare or giving a small tip is a kind gesture. Keep in mind that tipping is less formalized than in the USA, so feel free to tip based on your satisfaction with the service.

What's the internet like in Brazil? Should I buy a SIM card? How available is Wi-Fi?

In Brazil, you can find Wi-Fi in most hotels, cafes, and restaurants, especially in urban areas. However, coverage might be spotty in rural regions. For more reliable internet access, buying a local SIM card is a great idea. Major providers include Vivo, Claro, and TIM. These offer various prepaid plans that will keep you connected throughout your trip. If your phone supports e-SIMs, you can also explore e-SIM data plans for convenience. This way, you won't have to rely solely on Wi-Fi and can have internet access while on the go.

What language do they speak in Brazil?

In Brazil, the official language is Portuguese. It's a bit different from the Portuguese spoken in Portugal, with some unique expressions you might hear or use during your trip. Here are a few handy ones:

  • Hello: Olá
  • Thank you: Obrigado (if you're male), Obrigada (if you're female)
  • Please: Por favor
  • How much?: Quanto custa?
  • Good morning: Bom dia

Knowing a few phrases can make your trip more enjoyable and help you connect with locals!

What kind of plugs are used in Brazil?

In Brazil, the plugs are type N with two round pins and a grounding pin, similar to type C but with an added third pin. The voltage is generally 127/220V, and the frequency is 60Hz. Since these plugs and voltage might be different from what you're used to in Europe or the USA, it's a good idea to bring a universal adapter to ensure your devices can be charged safely.

What’s the main religion in Brazil?

The main religion in Brazil is Christianity, with Roman Catholicism being the most widely practiced. Approximately 65% of the population identifies as Roman Catholic. Besides Catholicism, Protestantism is also significant, with about 22% of Brazilians following various Protestant denominations, including Evangelicals, Pentecostals, and Baptists. Important religious holidays in Brazil include Good Friday, Easter, and Christmas, which are celebrated nationwide with various traditions and festivities.

What should I pack for Brazil?

Brazil is a diverse country with various climates, so it's good to be prepared for different conditions. Here's a helpful list of what to pack in your backpack:

  • Clothing:
    • Lightweight shirts and shorts
    • A light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings

What is the Money Pot and how does it work?

The question of all questions! Here’s some more information:

  • The Money Pot is a common fund collected in local currency from all travellers on the trip and managed by your Travel Coordinator;

  • It is used to streamline payments for extra activities, goods and services that the whole group decides to do. This guarantees flexibility in choosing activities and excursions at the destination in line with the mood of the group;

  • It is typically collected on the first day of the trip in local currency, although at times, the Travel Coordinator may ask for it to be paid before departure;

  • You’ll find the Money Pot amount on the website under the section ‘What’s included in the Money Pot’. To find this look for ‘What’s included’, scroll down to ‘Money Pot? Click here’ and you’ll find the details.
  • The amount varies depending on the destination chosen;

  • It is usually used for group expenses that all travellers decide to take part in, but sometimes if you opt out of an activity it might make more sense for it to come out of the Money Pot. In these cases the Coordinator will return the amount for this activity back to you at the end of the trip;

  • It is estimated based on the experience of other groups but can vary depending on what activities your group is keen for. As such, the Travel Coordinator may need to increase the amount during the trip;

  • If not all of the Money Pot is spent, the difference will be returned to all travellers at the end of the trip;

  • The Money Pot also covers the Travel Coordinator’s share of the activities included in the Money Pot, except for those activities that are free for the Travel Coordinator;

  • If you pay in advance for part of the Money Pot before the trip for certain non-refundable optional activities, unfortunately, the amount cannot be refunded if the trip is cancelled;

  • Activities paid through the Money Pot: they are carried out by third-party local suppliers and their conditions apply; WeRoad does not intervene in their management nor assumes any responsibility. For details on the money pot, see the General Terms and Conditions
What payment methods can I use?

We offer several payment methods to fit every need:

1. Credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express);
2. Instalment payment with Klarna (you’ll pay for the trip in three equal amounts);
3. PayPal (for selected destinations);

Yes, but the available options depend on the status of your trip and when you make the request.

You can cancel your booking by emailing hello@weroad.com
free of charge, up to 31 days before departure.
Please note: if it’s your first unconfirmed booking, you will only be asked to provide a credit card, PayPal, or Revolut as a guarantee, but nothing will be charged. From the second unconfirmed booking onwards, a mandatory £/$0100 deposit will be required.

What type of accommodation should I expect on your trips?

For our trips we usually use locally owned accommodation instead of big hotel chains. It’s our favourite way to really experience the local culture and, whenever we can, support the local economy. Typically, you’ll stay in hotels, apartments, guesthouses and hostels with the same standard maintained across all trips in the same destination.

The list of accommodation for your trip will be shared with you by your Travel Coordinator 2-5 days before departure, along with other useful details for your adventure!

Can I find out my travel groups' flights?

Yes! We might not know the flights for everyone else in the group, but there are ways to find out which flights your fellow WeRoaders will be taking.

1. All travellers can share their flight details after booking on their My WeRoad account so that other travellers on the same trip can see these details anonymously.

2. How is a group made up in average?

Generally, our groups have an average of 11 people. Everyone on our trips speaks English, and travellers join us from across the UK, Europe and beyond. Our trips are open to travelers between 25 and 49 years old. The indicated age is meant to give you an idea of the type of group, but it's not a strict limit: it's possible to participate even with a few years more or less, as long as you can keep up with the pace and energy of the group you're traveling with.

Each group will be joined and led by one of our experienced Travel Coordinators, who’s there to ensure everything runs smoothly and the group feels well-supported.

If you’d like to know more about our typical WeRoad groups do reach out to us on WhatsApp on +44 7716573700.

Can I see who’s in the group before I book the trip?

Yes! If you're curious, you can take a sneak peek at the group before booking.
You’ll find the info in the ‘Group’ section for each trip on the departures page, showing how many WeRoaders have already booked.

Click the little arrow and you’ll even see their gender and ages – but hey, that’s exclusive info, so we’ll ask you to log in or sign up to see that!

If a location is mentioned, is it guaranteed that we’ll spend the night there?

For some trips, in the itinerary section, you’ll find the number of nights and the location (not the hotel) where you’ll be spending the night(s). The location shown is the one we usually go for on most trips, but in some cases, you might stay in a nearby town. This will depend on logistics or availability of accommodation.

The list of accommodation for your trip (and therefore also the exact locations) will be shared by your Travel Coordinator 2-5 days before departure, along with other useful information for your adventure!

Who is the Travel Coordinator and what is their role on the trip?

The WeRoad Travel Coordinator is an experienced and skilled traveller who will be the perfect companion for your trip. They will manage all the logistical aspects of the itinerary like transport, timings, accommodation, restaurant bookings and meeting points, so that you can enjoy the trip without this hassle. They’re there to support the group, ensure everything runs smoothly and will no doubt make the trip a lot of fun along the way too!

The Coordinator will set up a WhatsApp group approximately 2 weeks before departure. This will be the moment to ask any pre-departure questions and get to know the rest of the group! If the trip you are interested in already has a Travel Coordinator assigned, you can contact them before booking. Their details will be on the trip page, or you can search for their name here. After booking, you will find their contact details in your My WeRoad account, under ‘Bookings and Trips’ > ‘Your Upcoming Trips’ > ‘Trip Details’.

Will I be sharing a room?

Yes, on all our trips you will share a room with other WeRoaders in your group. By default this will be people of the same gender, unless you tick ‘I'm OK with a mixed gender room’ when you book. The bathroom will either be private or shared only with other travellers on the trip. The rooms might be twins, triples, quadruples or multi-share (up to 8 people in exceptional cases), depending on the destination and availability.

You will never share with people from outside of the WeRoad group, except in certain cases for local experiences, which are specifically mentioned in the itinerary or communicated before booking. These typically involve specific nights in unique accommodation like tents, homestays, or camping, offering a more adventurous travel experience in exchange for some comfort.

On some of our trips we can offer a private room for an additional cost. Just tick the ‘Private Room’ option at checkout to get this added. For some of our trips if you book as two travellers together you can add this private room free of charge. Look out for this option at checkout.

Please note that if you do book a private room with a friend/partner this could be either a double or a twin room so please email hello@weroad.com if you have a preference on this.

How can I be part of the WeRoad community?

When you set off on a WeRoad trip, you’re officially a WeRoader – and as we often say, 'once a WeRoader, always a WeRoader'. This means that once you’re part of the community, a little piece of WeRoad will always stay with you.

But you’re not just a WeRoader during your trips, far from it! The community is alive and active all year round: you can stay in touch by following and interacting on our social media channels, like the Facebook group or the Instagram profile. You can also come along to one of our many events that we run in different cities worldwide. Check out and sign up to our events by downloading the WeMeet app here
