South America is in the southern hemisphere, so seasons are reversed compared to Europe: the best time runs from May to September for Patagonia and the Andes (dry winter), while December-March is ideal for the Atlantic coast and the Colombian Caribbean.

12-15 days are enough to visit a single country like Peru or Argentina; for an itinerary spanning several countries, such as Peru, Bolivia, and Chile, plan at least 3-4 weeks given the vast distances.

Most South American countries, such as Peru, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia, don't require a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days for many nationalities; a valid passport is always required, though.

In high-altitude Andean areas (Cusco, La Paz, Atacama) it's common to feel altitude sickness during the first few days; in Amazon regions, yellow fever vaccination and malaria prophylaxis are recommended.

Domestic flights are often the fastest way to cover the continent's vast distances, while comfortable long-distance buses connect the main cities; in remote areas like Patagonia or the Amazon, ferries or dirt roads may also be necessary.

Spanish is the most widely spoken language in most countries, while Portuguese is spoken in Brazil; Quechua and Aymara also survive in some Andean areas.
