The best places to see fall foliage in 2026
Everybody starts with New England, and honestly they're right to: Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine turn the deepest red of anywhere on earth, and they do it first, from late September. But fall isn't only a New England thing.
The Italian Dolomites go gold in early October, Scotland peaks in the second half of the month, and northern Spain holds its color into mid-November: so if your vacation days are locked in, there's a version of fall that fits them.
Every trip below runs as a small group, which means you can book one solo and still not travel alone.

Peak color shifts by a week or two every year depending on how the summer went. If your dates are fixed, aim for the middle of the window rather than the edges.
Fall foliage in Vermont and New England
Vermont fall foliage is the version everyone else is copying. From the last week of September the sugar maples go scarlet, and the color rolls south through New Hampshire and Maine over the next three weeks: covered bridges, white church steeples, cider donuts at the side of the road, and about four hundred people photographing the same barn.
Where to go? Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and Upstate New York with the Hudson Valley, the Catskills and the Adirondacks.
Fall colors in Italy
Italy runs two seasons back to back. First the Dolomites in early October, when the larch forests turn pure gold against gray limestone and the first snow lands on the peaks above them: the best hiking week of the Italian year, and nothing like New England to look at. Then the valleys through late October and November: Tuscany, Umbria and Trentino, vineyards turning at the same time as the grape harvest and the truffle season.
Where to go? The Dolomites, Trentino and Tuscany & Umbria.
Fall colors in Scotland and the UK
Scotland gets Britain's best fall, and it gets it late: from mid-October the Highlands, Perthshire and the Trossachs go copper and gold, with lochs to reflect it and an unreasonable number of castles in the frame. Shorter days than New England, moodier light, and about a tenth of the traffic.
Where to go? Perthshire, the Trossachs & Loch Lomond and the Cairngorms.

Europe's latest fall: the beech forests of Navarre and Asturias hold their color into mid-November, weeks after the Alps have dropped theirs.

Vineyards and forest at once: Alsace, Burgundy and the Loire turn through late October, right as the harvest wraps up.

Forest country: the Black Forest, Bavaria and the Rhine valley stay colorful into early November, with Oktoberfest and the Christmas markets on either side of it.

Is the flight included?
Flights are not included, we love flexibility! This way you have the total freedom to choose which airport to depart from, which airline to fly with, how many stops to make, and, if you wish, to stay a few extra days at your destination. Obviously, we can help you choose them (here for flight purchase support) and what’s more, we have many discounts you can use with some of the major airlines.
Are there any age limits?
Yep, we have age limits. We organise groups split into different age groups. It won't be hard to find the perfect WeRoad for you!
What is leaf peeping?
Leaf peeping is traveling somewhere specifically to look at the fall colors: a drive, a hike or a whole trip built around the few weeks when the leaves turn. The term is New England's, where it's effectively a seasonal sport, and a leaf peeper is, inevitably, the person doing it. It's spread well beyond the U.S. since: you'll hear it in the UK now too.
How do I book a fall foliage tour?
Pick a trip from the list above, choose one of the available departure dates and book online — you'll pay a deposit now and the balance closer to departure. You don't need a group: most Weroaders book solo and get matched with 8 to 15 other travelers plus a Travel Coordinator who runs the trip. Flights aren't included, so you can fly from whichever airport works for you.
Where can you see fall foliage?
Anywhere with deciduous trees and cold nights, which is more places than most people expect. In the U.S. it's not just New England — the Colorado Rockies turn gold in late September when the aspens go, upstate New York peaks in mid-October and the Blue Ridge holds color into November. In Europe the Alps and the Dolomites turn first, then Britain, France and Germany, then northern Spain last. What you need everywhere is the same: cool nights, sunny days and not too much rain.

What's the best fall foliage road trip?
In the U.S., the East Coast run from Washington, D.C. through the Niagara region to New York City: nine days, peak color for most of it, and cities at both ends. If you want the classic short version, the Kancamagus Highway in New Hampshire is 34 miles of pure New England fall and takes an afternoon. In Europe, the Dolomites: mountain passes, larch forests and a different valley every day.
