Itinerary

Guatemala, the land of eternal spring, is undoubtedly the most beautiful country in Central America, with its greatest cultural and natural diversity. During this trip, we will visit one of the most beautiful colonial cities in the world: Antigua Guatemala. Have you ever climbed an erupting volcano, slept at the summit, and witnessed the massive explosions up close? Well, this will be your chance to experience a magical adventure! We will visit colourful markets and villages and discover why Guatemala is culturally diverse. To do this, we will head to Lake Atitlán, a lake surrounded by 3 volcanoes and 12 villages. Here, we will learn about many traditions, hear new languages, and taste dishes that only exist in Guatemala—a true delight. We will venture into the small Guatemalan Amazon and spend time with a Garifuna community, the only

Caribbean-origin community in Guatemala. We will finish our journey through Guatemala in Tikal, the largest and most important Mayan complex in the world. Its pyramids are a marvel! We will then move on to Belize. Here, we will explore caves and float along the river in a tube. To end the trip, we will spend our last two days on Caye Caulker and visit the second-largest reef in the world. With that, we will say goodbye and return to England with countless memories and unforgettable experiences.

A map showing a tour route starting in Antigua Guatemala, traveling through Guatemala and Belize, and ending in Cayo Caulker.
Check-in

Return flights are not included in the price of the trip, so you can choose your departure point, time, and airline. We do this to give you maximum freedom of choice! Check-in at the hotel in Antigua Guatemala. Get ready—today marks the start of our adventure in one of the most colourful and culturally diverse countries on the planet.

Among ruins and markets

Previously the capital of the country, Antigua is one of the best-preserved colonial cities in Latin America. We will stroll through its streets, explore the typical markets, visit the Convent of the Capuchins, the famous Arco Street, the La Merced Church, the ruins caused by various earthquakes, and its magnificent cathedral. We will mingle with the locals to uncover city legends such as “La Llorona” or “El Cadejo.” All this under the shadow of the majestic Agua Volcano.

What better way to start getting to know each other than with Guatemalan specialties at our welcome dinner? Pepian, Jocon, and of course, many shots of rum to toast the beginning of our adventure.

Have you ever seen an eruption so up close?

This morning, we will wake up early and head towards Acatenango Volcano. To reach the base camp, which is at 3,600 meters, it will take us approximately 4-6 hours with approximately 1200m in ascent, but the views will be spectacular. As night falls, we will witness a unique spectacle. The nearby Fuego Volcano, just an hour's walk away, will offer lava eruptions like you've never seen before. We will sleep in tents and have dinner under the stars. What an adventure!

A spectacular sunrise!

Today, we will wake up very early to ascend to 3,976 meters to witness one of the best sunrises in the world. From here, we will have a view of a significant part of Guatemala’s volcanic chain. Fatigue will not hold us back. After a hearty breakfast, we will descend the volcano and return to Antigua Guatemala, where we can shower and rest after an incredible adventure.

The lake of 3 volcanoes and 12 villages

Today, we will change cities and head to San Juan la Laguna on Lake Atitlán. This village is one of the most colourful around the lake. Upon arrival, we will take a tour through its art-filled streets and in the afternoon, visit several producer associations of honey, chocolate, medicinal plants, and clothing.

In the evening, we’ll share dinner with a local family—learning to cook their specialty, Pepián—and hear the legends of the lake. This homestay will offer a real glimpse into life here, where comforts we take for granted elsewhere—like running water—may be scarce, but the warmth and stories more than make up for it.

The cult of Maximón

Today, we will take a boat to Santiago Atitlán, another of the 12 villages around the lake. You will notice how the culture in this village differs from that of San Juan la Laguna. Even the traditional costumes of its inhabitants are different. Here, there is a cult dedicated to a saint not recognised by the Church: Maximón. They venerate him through dances and aguardiente (a type of strong liquor). It’s quite a spectacle! The cult is always performed in private homes, so we must respect the space we enter.

Chichicastenango, the largest market in Guatemala

The Chichicastenango market is open only on Thursdays and Sundays. We will have the chance to explore its labyrinths of vegetables, clothing, and traditional souvenirs.

We’ll try our hand at bargaining and take many souvenirs home. In the late afternoon, we will return to Antigua Guatemala.

The Guatemalan Amazon

We will leave very early in the morning to avoid the traffic from the capital. The journey to Río Dulce will take approximately 4.5 hours. Upon arrival, we can cross the largest bridge in Guatemala and visit the Castillo de San Felipe. We can also rent a boat to explore the river and see why it is considered a little Amazon. If we're lucky, we might spot manatees and other wildlife. We will also spend time with a Garifuna community, which has Caribbean origins.

Entering Mayan territory

We will leave Río Dulce behind and head into the Petén department of Guatemala. This region is known for being the largest in Guatemala and home to the greatest number of Mayan ruins in the world. We’ll arrive at Flores, an island in the middle of Lake Petén Itzá. Here, you can rent kayaks, swim in the lake, or stroll through the streets.

In the evening, the lively atmosphere won’t disappoint, so we can head out for dinner at one of the island’s charming restaurants and later go dancing.

Welcome to the most spectacular Mayan complex in the world

Today, we enter the most important Mayan city in the world: Tikal. A city surrounded by jungle, wildlife, and history. It’s a setting worthy of a Star Wars film, with many pyramids. We will explore the entire city, passing through the central plaza and its main pyramid, the Great Jaguar. As we walk, we’ll spot monkeys, parrots, and countless other species of wildlife. If we're lucky, we might witness Mayan ceremonies. Climbing to the top of Temple IV will give us a breathtaking view of the pyramids emerging from the jungle. A photo at this spot is a must!

After finishing the tour, we will return to Flores, where we will spend the night again.

We’re changing countries

Did you know that Belize was a department of Guatemala until 1992, when it gained independence? In Belize, English is the primary language because it was a British colony. We will cross the border to reach Belize City and then take a boat to Caye Caulker. This island is small and a perfect place to relax on the beautiful Caribbean beaches. In the evening, we can go out dancing.

Exploring the second-largest reef in the world

These two days will be filled with relaxation and a bit of adventure. Those who wish can

go scuba diving or snorkelling to explore the second-largest reef in the world. The underwater views will undoubtedly be spectacular. In the afternoons, enjoy the beach, the sea, and a good cocktail.

Last day in Caye Caulker

On the penultimate day, we’ll prepare for our final dinner together: it will be our last chance to enjoy delicious Caribbean food and spend time together. The trip has been intense, and we return home with our backpacks full of memories, toasting to all the emotions experienced and shared!

Check-out and goodbyes

We have reached the end of this adventure: we say goodbye and promise to see each other again soon for another WeRoad!

FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

About this trip

What are the meeting and departure details for this trip?

This journey begins at Antigua Guatemala. On the first day, we meet at 18:00.

Your Group Leader will add you to the WhatsApp group for your trip about 15 days before departure.
It’s a great way to start getting to know your travel mates, receive more details about the first day’s meeting point, and ask any pre-departure questions you might have.

We recommend that upon landing in Guatemala City, you take a shared transfer to Antigua Guatemala. The travel time between the airport and Antigua Guatemala is between 40 minutes and an hour. Caye Caulker is just an hour and a half from Belize City airport.

This journey ends at Cayo Caulker. On the last day, you are free to leave at any time, so whether you need to book a flight, a train, or wish to continue the journey on your own, you can organize your return as you prefer.

Is there anything else I should be aware of regarding the physical effort of this trip?

We will climb a 3,900-metre-high volcano (10-12 hours of hiking, with a 1,570m ascent and descent, culminating at the 3,976m summit) and sleep in tents. In Guatemala, traffic can be very heavy, and on one of the days, we may spend many hours on the road. Backpacks are required to optimise space in the transports. The rest of the time, we will sleep in hotels and interact a lot with the locals to learn about their cultures and traditions. We will be in the jungle, so remember not to feed any animals we might encounter along the way. In Belize, we will go scuba diving or snorkelling, so don't forget to respect marine life.

For this trip a backpack is mandatory, why?

For this itinerary, traveling with a backpack is mandatory for logistical reasons and the convenience of the entire group - including yourself! Trolleys, bulky suitcases, or hard luggage are not allowed. The Travel Group Leader will provide guidance on the ideal baggage before departure via the WhatsApp group.

Can I find out my travel groups' flights?

Yes! We might not know the flights for everyone else in the group, but there are ways to find out which flights your fellow WeRoaders will be taking.

1. All travellers can share their flight details after booking on their My WeRoad account so that other travellers on the same trip can see these details anonymously.

2. Alternatively you can join our Facebook group: Solo Travellers | WeRoad Community – (here is the extended link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/963298767843213 ) Look for a post about the trip you’re interested in or ask the group admin for help in getting in touch with your future travel companions!

3. If the Group Leader has already been assigned to the trip you’re keen for, you can easily find their Facebook post on the website.

What type of accommodation should I expect on your trips?

For our trips we usually use locally owned accommodation instead of big hotel chains. It’s our favourite way to really experience the local culture and, whenever we can, support the local economy. Typically, you’ll stay in hotels, apartments, guesthouses and hostels with the same standard maintained across all trips in the same destination.

The list of accommodation for your trip will be shared with you by your Group Leader 2-5 days before departure, along with other useful details for your adventure!

How is a group made up in average?

Generally, our groups have an average of 11 people. Everyone on our trips speaks English, and travellers join us from across the UK, Europe and beyond. Our trips are open to travelers between 18 and 49 years old. The indicated age is meant to give you an idea of the type of group, but it's not a strict limit: it's possible to participate even with a few years more or less, as long as you can keep up with the pace and energy of the group you're traveling with.

Each group will be joined and led by one of our experienced Group Leaders, who’s there to ensure everything runs smoothly and the group feels well-supported.

If you’d like to know more about our typical WeRoad groups do reach out to us on WhatsApp on +44 7716573700.

Can I see who’s in the group before I book the trip?

Yes! If you're curious, you can take a sneak peek at the group before booking.
You’ll find the info in the ‘Group’ section for each trip on the departures page, showing how many WeRoaders have already booked.

Click the little arrow and you’ll even see their gender and ages – but hey, that’s exclusive info, so we’ll ask you to log in or sign up to see that!

If a location is mentioned, is it guaranteed that we’ll spend the night there?

For some trips, in the itinerary section, you’ll find the number of nights and the location (not the hotel) where you’ll be spending the night(s). The location shown is the one we usually go for on most trips, but in some cases, you might stay in a nearby town. This will depend on logistics or availability of accommodation.

The list of accommodation for your trip (and therefore also the exact locations) will be shared by your Travel Group Leader 2-5 days before departure, along with other useful information for your adventure!

Who is the Travel Group Leader and what is their role on the trip?

The WeRoad Travel Group Leader is an experienced and skilled traveller who will be the perfect companion for your trip. They will manage all the logistical aspects of the itinerary like transport, timings, accommodation, restaurant bookings and meeting points, so that you can enjoy the trip without this hassle. They’re there to support the group, ensure everything runs smoothly and will no doubt make the trip a lot of fun along the way too!

The Group Leader will set up a WhatsApp group approximately 2 weeks before departure. This will be the moment to ask any pre-departure questions and get to know the rest of the group! If the trip you are interested in already has a Travel Group Leader assigned, you can contact them before booking. Their details will be on the trip page, or you can search for their name here. After booking, you will find their contact details in your My WeRoad account, under ‘Bookings and Trips’ > ‘Your Upcoming Trips’ > ‘Trip Details’.

Will I be sharing a room?

Yes, on all our trips you will share a room with other WeRoaders in your group. By default this will be people of the same gender, unless you tick ‘I'm OK with a mixed gender room’ when you book. The bathroom will either be private or shared only with other travellers on the trip. The rooms might be twins, triples, quadruples or multi-share (up to 8 people in exceptional cases), depending on the destination and availability.

You will never share with people from outside of the WeRoad group, except in certain cases for local experiences, which are specifically mentioned in the itinerary or communicated before booking. These typically involve specific nights in unique accommodation like tents, homestays, or camping, offering a more adventurous travel experience in exchange for some comfort.

On some of our trips we can offer a private room for an additional cost. Just tick the ‘Private Room’ option at checkout to get this added. For some of our trips if you book as two travellers together you can add this private room free of charge. Look out for this option at checkout.

Please note that if you do book a private room with a friend/partner this could be either a double or a twin room so please email hello@weroad.com if you have a preference on this.

How can I be part of the WeRoad community?

When you set off on a WeRoad trip, you’re officially a WeRoader – and as we often say, 'once a WeRoader, always a WeRoader'. This means that once you’re part of the community, a little piece of WeRoad will always stay with you.

But you’re not just a WeRoader during your trips, far from it! The community is alive and active all year round: you can stay in touch by following and interacting on our social media channels, like the Facebook group or the Instagram profile. You can also come along to one of our many events that we run in different cities worldwide. Check out and sign up to our events by downloading the WeMeet app here

About Guatemala

What are the entry requirements for Guatemala?

Find out the entry requirements for Guatemala, and, if needed, apply for your visa through our partner Sherpa.

Before traveling, always remember to check the government website of your country of origin for updates on the entry requirements for Guatemala – you wouldn’t want to stay home due to a bureaucratic detail!

What's the time zone in Guatemala?

Guatemala is in the Central Standard Time (CST) zone, which is 6 hours behind the UK. So, if it's 12pm in the UK, it will be 6am in Guatemala. For the USA, Guatemala is generally:

  • 1 hour behind Eastern Time
  • 2 hours ahead of Pacific Time

If it's 12pm on the East Coast, it will be 11am in Guatemala, and if it's 12pm on the West Coast, it will be 10am in Guatemala. Guatemala does not observe daylight saving time, so these differences stay consistent throughout the year.

Which currency is used in Guatemala?

Guatemala uses the Guatemalan Quetzal as its currency. The exchange rates are approximately:

  • 1 GBP to 10 GTQ
  • 1 USD to 7.5 GTQ
  • 1 EUR to 8.5 GTQ

You can exchange your currency at banks, exchange bureaus, or at the airport in Guatemala. Always check for the latest rates before exchanging money.

How can I pay in Guatemala?

Cash is widely accepted, but credit and debit cards are commonly used in cities and tourist areas. Be sure to carry some cash for smaller towns or markets where cards might not be accepted. ATMs are available in larger cities, and it's wise to notify your bank about your travel plans to avoid any issues.

Do I need to tip in Guatemala?

In Guatemala, tipping is appreciated but not always expected. In restaurants, a tip of 10 percent is generally considered polite for good service, though check if it's already included in your bill. For taxi drivers, rounding up the fare is common. Hotel staff, porters, and tour guides would also appreciate a small tip, usually a few quetzals. It's a nice way to show gratitude for good service.

What's the internet like in Guatemala? Should I buy a SIM card? How available is Wi-Fi?

In Guatemala, internet access can vary based on where you are. In cities, you'll find Wi-Fi readily available in hotels, cafes, and restaurants, but rural areas may have limited connectivity. It's a good idea to buy a local SIM card or an e-SIM data plan if you want reliable internet access on the go. Major providers like Tigo and Claro offer prepaid plans with decent coverage. This way, you'll stay connected wherever your adventures take you in Guatemala.

These phrases can be handy while traveling and interacting with locals.

What kind of plugs are used in Guatemala?

Guatemala uses Type A and Type B plugs, which are the same as those used in the USA. The voltage is 120V with a frequency of 60Hz. If you're coming from a country that uses different plugs, we suggest you bring a universal adapter to ensure you can charge all your devices without any issues.

What’s the main religion in Guatemala?

Guatemala's main religion is Christianity, with the majority being Roman Catholic, but there's also a significant Protestant community. Additionally, Mayan spiritual practices are woven into the culture. Important religious holidays include Semana Santa (Holy Week) and Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). If you're visiting during these times, you'll experience vibrant and unique celebrations that reflect a mix of traditions.

What should I pack for Guatemala?

Guatemala's diverse climate and terrain mean you'll need a variety of items in your backpack. Here's a list to help you prepare:

  • Clothing:
    • Light shirts and T-shirts
    • Long-sleeve tops for cooler evenings
    • Lightweight pants or shorts
    • A rain jacket or poncho for wet weather
    • Swimwear for beaches and hot springs
  • Shoes:
    • Comfortable walking shoes
    • Sandals for casual outings
    • Hiking boots for exploring mountainous regions
  • Accessories and Technology:
    • Sunglasses and a sun hat
    • A camera or smartphone with a charger
    • A power bank for extra battery life
  • Toiletries and Medication:
    • Sunscreen and insect repellent
    • Basic toiletries like toothpaste, toothbrush, and shampoo
    • Common travel medication, such as pain relievers and motion sickness pills

Be prepared for both warm and cooler climates, especially if you're visiting different regions.

What’s the weather like in Guatemala?

For the best experience, we suggest visiting during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is most pleasant.

What are the entry requirements for Belize?

Find out the entry requirements for Belize, and, if needed, apply for your visa through our partner Sherpa.

Before traveling, always remember to check the government website of your country of origin for updates on the entry requirements for Belize – you wouldn’t want to stay home due to a bureaucratic detail!

What's the time zone in Belize?

Belize is in the Central Standard Time zone (CST), which is 6 hours behind the UK. So if it's 12pm in the UK, it's 6am in Belize. For the USA, it's 1 hour behind Eastern Standard Time (if it's 12pm EST, it's 11am in Belize) and the same as Central Time. Belize does not observe daylight saving time, so the time difference remains consistent throughout the year.

  • 1 USD to 2.00 BZD
  • 1 EUR to 2.20 BZD

You can exchange currency at banks or authorized exchange offices.

How can I pay in Belize?

Cash and credit cards are widely accepted in Belize. We recommend you carry both, as some smaller establishments or more remote areas might only accept cash. Major credit cards like Visa and Mastercard are commonly used, but it's always a good idea to have some Belizean Dollars or US Dollars on hand. ATMs are available in larger cities and tourist areas if you need to withdraw cash.

Do I need to tip in Belize?

Tipping in Belize is generally appreciated but not mandatory. In restaurants, a tip of 10 to 15 percent of the bill is common if service is not included. For bartenders, leaving a couple of Belize dollars per drink is a nice gesture. If you're taking a taxi, rounding up the fare is a friendly practice. Hotel staff, like porters and housekeepers, usually receive a couple of dollars for their services. Always check your bill to see if a service charge has already been added before tipping.

What's the internet like in Belize? Should I buy a SIM card? How available is Wi-Fi?

In Belize, the internet can be a bit spotty, especially in rural areas, so having a reliable connection can be handy. Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, cafes, and restaurants in urban areas, but it may not always be fast. For more consistent access, especially if you're planning to explore remote areas, buying a local SIM card or an e-SIM data plan is a good idea. Providers like Digi or Smart offer various plans, and you can easily purchase a SIM card at the airport or in local shops.
