Itinerary
This is a trip for true explorers! The journey is created based on the discovery of the Teranga people, “the people of welcome,” and to leave you speechless in front of wild landscapes and fascinating traditions from afar! We’ll have an incredible experience that will take us in 10 days to explore one of the pearls of unexplored Africa: Senegal, and discover all its most beautiful corners.
Get ready for all sorts of adventures: dinner around a bonfire on the shores of Lake Retba, a day in the Bandia Reserve to see the savanna animals, an immersion in the Sine Saloum Biosphere Reserve, where we’ll have an incredible experience surrounded by the lush nature of this area. We’ll visit local villages and help a non-profit volunteer organization that welcomes street children in Senegal! Not to mention the African sunsets that will leave us speechless! And of course, some well-deserved relaxation is a must: a few days by the sea. We’ll return home refreshed, with a backpack full of memories and just that little bit of 'Africa blues' that affects everyone, but new friends will be there to ease this nostalgia.

Welcome to Senegal!
1 night: Dakar
Check-in: our adventure kicks off in Dakar
Flights to and from the destination aren't included in the package, so you can decide where to fly from, at what time, and with the airline you prefer. This is to give you maximum freedom of choice.
Our adventure kicks off in the capital of Senegal: Dakar! After all the entry formalities, we'll head to the hotel and use these first few hours on Senegalese soil to get acquainted with this new country we're sure to fall in love with soon!
Dakar and Gorée Island
1 night: Dakar
A dive into the past
Our adventure on African soil officially begins: after a good breakfast, we meet our guide and set off. We hop on the ferry that will take us to the small island of Gorée, a historical and natural wonder. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it's known for the poignant Maison des Esclaves, the House of Slaves. The island was indeed both a primary trading post for commerce between Africa and the Americas, and an important hub for the slave trade from the Senegal and Gambia region to the plantations of the Caribbean and the United States.
Today Gorée is a vibrant artistic centre for artisans, symbols of its cultural rebirth. We take a stroll to discover its most hidden corners and are left speechless by its immaculate beauty: the cobbled streets, the pastel-coloured colonial houses, and the bougainvillea create a picturesque atmosphere, contrasting with the island's painful history. The cliffs offer breathtaking views of the Atlantic and the small beaches bring peace and tranquility. We enjoy a delicious lunch by the sea before continuing our journey.
The Monument of Rebirth
We head back to Dakar and start making our way to the famous Lake Retba, where some relaxation and a spectacular sunset await us. But first, a must-see stop at the Monument of the African Renaissance, a colossal 49-meter-high bronze statue inaugurated in 2010. Depicting a man, a woman, and a child pointing towards the horizon, it symbolizes the redemption and rebirth of Africa after centuries of oppression and colonialism. Designed by Senegalese sculptor Pierre Goudiaby Atepa, the monument was built on a hill offering a panoramic view of the city and the Atlantic Ocean.
Beach life on Ngor Island
1 night: Lago Retba
Let's start breathing in the Teranga
This morning, breakfast is local: caffè touba, tapalapa, or thiakry… there’s something for everyone’s taste, and it’s a 100% dive into Senegalese culture! After that, we’re ready for our day on Ngor Island, which starts with a short pirogue trip from the coast of Dakar. The crossing, amidst crystal-clear waters and colorful pirogues, sets the mood for the island’s relaxed vibe. Once we arrive, you’ll be greeted by picturesque alleys and brightly colored houses. As we wander, we’ll discover art galleries and local artisan workshops, where you can admire Senegalese art and chat with the artists.
For lunch, we’ll settle into a beachfront restaurant. Fresh fish, grilled and served with the typical thieboudienne, is the star of a simple yet delicious meal, accompanied by ocean views and the gentle sound of the waves. How about some water sports? Surfing enthusiasts can catch the waves the island is famous for, while those seeking relaxation can try snorkeling or SUP, or simply chill on the beach… the choice is yours! As the sun sets, it’s time to head back to the mainland and get ready for our dinner by the famous Pink Lake, where we’ll spend the night in our bungalow!
Quad biking at Lake Retba and Toubab Dialao
1 night: Toubab Djalao
Quads and adrenaline
Let's kick off the day with a good dose of adrenaline in lunar-like landscapes! Our quad bike excursion will take us along the shores of the famous lake, through picturesque villages, to the coast via sand dunes and the endless beaches of the Senegalese coast! And with a nice dip in the sea to cool off together and a BBQ lunch by the sea, we wrap the morning in the best way.
After lunch, we'll head to Toubab Dialaw, located on the Atlantic coast of Senegal. It's a picturesque fishing village famous for its enchanting beaches and artistic vibe.
Pink Hills Trekking
These hills get their name from the pinkish hues of the clay rocks. We'll cover about 5-7km in this fascinating setting that blends nature, breathtaking views, and an immersion into local culture. And we'll do it just before sunset, when the hills' colors intensify and the atmosphere becomes magical.
Horseback riding in the Niassam Hills and the ONLUS reception center
1 night: Sine Saloum
A special morning
We're in for a truly special morning. We'll be guests at the Maison Des Enfants, a reception and volunteer Onlus center focused on street children in Senegal, commonly known as “Talibè Children”. We’ll bring gifts and receive smiles and joy from these amazing kids!
Everyone on the saddle in the Niassam Hills
For lunch, we'll roll south towards a place of enchanting beauty. The day continues with a horseback ride through the hills of Niassam, across a boundless landscape dotted with majestic centuries-old baobabs standing like giants in the sky. After the ride, we'll continue with a visit to the splendid colored salt pools and observe the women working there using traditional methods, but only after enjoying a gourmet lunch with this spectacular view.
After this intense day, some well-deserved relaxation, we'll arrive towards evening in the Sine Saloum Reserve, enjoy the sunset, and dinner.
Kayaking in Sine Saloum, Joal Fadiouth and the Sacred Baobab
1 night: Someone
Kayak in the Reserve
Today we'll soak up the peace of this quiet and wild place. We'll explore the area with a relaxing kayak excursion, to discover one of the richest and most fascinating ecosystems in Senegal: between mangroves, the calm river water and the singing of birds, we'll immerse ourselves in the tranquility of this enchanting place.
The magic of Joal Fadiouth
After lunch, we head back north and continue towards Joal Fadiouth, a fascinating village on an island made of shells, known for its harmonious coexistence between Christians and Muslims… a truly unique place in the world! Before reaching our hotel, we’ll make a rather special stop: the Sacred Baobab, an imposing ancient tree that houses a colony of bats inside its hollow trunk, a symbol of spirituality and legend for the local populatio. You can even go inside - who will be the bravest?
Once we reach our hotel in Mbour, on the Petite Cote, we’ll get ready for a special dinner - we’ll be guests in a typical local village, where we’ll be welcomed by the energy of the children and, amidst traditional dances and food, we’ll truly understand what Teranga! means.
The Mbour market and the visit to the local village
1 night: Someone
Market visit
What awaits us is a truly local morning. We'll start with a visit to the Mbour market, a melting pot of sounds, colors, and flavors that perfectly represents Senegalese daily life. And we'll dive into the hustle and bustle to buy some gifts (rice, potatoes, onions, etc.) for our upcoming visits!
Lunch in the village and a relaxed dinner!
For lunch, we'll be guests in another small village, so get ready for another wave of excitement from the kids who'll run to meet us. And while we play and explore the village, something's cooking! We'll see how the women get busy preparing lunch for everyone, and if we fancy, we can even try to help them! We'll enjoy lunch, just like them, sitting under the big Baobab tree, on the ground and with the village elders… we'll feel right at home! And here too, it's Teranga! And for dinner? A relaxing evening by the sea awaits us, watching the sunset, accompanied by the sound of drums and the warmth of a wonderful bonfire on the beach. We'll dine here with our feet in the sand.
Safari and lions in the Bandia Reserve
1 night: Someone
Jeep tour!
It’s time for our jeep tour where we’ll have the chance to spot giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, rhinos, and many other African species in a protected habitat… just like a safari! After a journey of about two hours in this immense forest, aboard our off-road vehicle, we’ll reach the Africa Ranch, home to the undisputed kings of the savanna: the lions! We'll be the ones in a cage, whilst they're free in their natural environment, as they majestically move among the trees and rest in the shade: a truly incredible experience!
Ever dreamed of getting up close with lion cubs? Small and fluffy, they’ll be right there for those who want it, ready to play with us! But beware! If you give them a finger, they’ll take the whole arm :)
Chill vibes, beach days, and buzzing nights out.
After our little lunch in the Bandia Reserve, we’re throwing on our swimsuits and grabbing our towels. Time to chill by the sea until evening! After this truly exciting morning, we’ll head to our hotel in Somone, where we’ll be staying for the last three nights to enjoy some well-deserved relaxation. What do you say, shall we enjoy our pool for a bit? We can organize a dinner at the hotel or go out and discover the nightlife of this little seaside village.
The Somone Lagoon
1 night: Someone
Fabric Workshop
This morning we're feeling a bit artistic and joining a bogolan workshop, an ancient natural fabric dyeing technique that uses clay, leaves, and other organic materials to create intricate patterns. The workshop is a fascinating place where traditional African art comes to life. Our master will show us all the secrets of the creative process: ready to create your own custom fabric? Each piece will be unique and represent the deep connection we'll take home from this wonderful land!
Word on the street: chill out!
The return is getting closer, so we'll spend the rest of the day totally chilling: what better place than the Somone lagoon? It’s up to us to decide how to spend these last hours: wandering through the markets to buy the last souvenirs? Or maybe a final dip in the sea, or even a surf lesson…
Whatever activity we choose, we'll spend the day here, in a truly stunning location that will also be the chosen spot for our farewell lunch! In the afternoon, however, our canoe tour awaits us to explore the area and look for local wildlife: herons, flamingos, pelicans, and of course, catch another beautiful sunset!
Goodbye Senegal!
It's time to say goodbye
What a journey! With our backpacks full of memories, hearts full of new friends, and eyes full of this gem of Africa, we're heading home! Finally, we'll know what it means to have a 'touch of Africa' too. One thing's for sure, we'll see each other again soon!

About Senegal
In Senegal, tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. In restaurants, you might leave about 10 percent of the bill if the service was good. For hotels, it's nice to tip porters and housekeeping a small amount, like a few dollars or euros. Taxi drivers do not usually expect a tip, but rounding up the fare is a friendly gesture. Remember, tipping is always at your discretion based on the service you receive.
In Senegal, you can pay using cash, credit cards, or mobile money. Credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and larger stores, but it's always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller vendors or markets. ATMs are available in urban areas, allowing you to withdraw local currency using international cards. Mobile money services like Orange Money and Wari are popular and widely used for transactions. Keep in mind that smaller towns might not have as many options, so it's wise to plan accordingly.
In Senegal, the power plugs and sockets used are types C, D, E, and K. The standard voltage is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. If you're coming from a country that uses different plug types, like the UK or the USA, we suggest you bring a universal adapter to ensure your devices can be charged properly. Always check your devices’ voltage compatibility to avoid any issues.
In Senegal, the official language is French, but you'll also hear a lot of Wolof, which is widely spoken by the locals. Here are some useful Wolof expressions you might come across:
- Hello: Salaamaalekum
- Thank you: Jërëjëf
- How are you?: Nanga def?
- Yes: Waaw
- No: Déedéet
These phrases can be handy during your trip to Senegal, especially when interacting with locals.
Packing for Senegal requires considering the warm climate and cultural norms. Here's a handy list of essentials to include in your backpack:
Clothing:
- Lightweight tops and t-shirts
- Long skirts or trousers for modesty
- Light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings
- Swimwear for beach visits
Shoes:
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Sandals for the beach
- Flip-flops for showers
Accessories and Technology:
- Sunhat and sunglasses
- Power bank and phone charger
- Camera for capturing memories
- Universal adapter (Senegal uses Type C, D, E, and K plugs at 230V)
Toiletries and Medication:
- Sunscreen and insect repellent
- Basic toiletries like toothbrush and shampoo
- Antimalarial medication
- Pain relievers and antihistamines
Being prepared will ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip to Senegal.
In Senegal, internet access can be a bit spotty, especially outside major cities like Dakar. Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, cafes, and restaurants in urban areas, but the connection might not always be reliable. If you need constant internet access, we suggest buying a local SIM card or an e-SIM data plan. Providers like Orange and Expresso offer good options. You'll find SIM cards easily at the airport or in local stores. This way, you can stay connected while exploring the country.
The main religion in Senegal is Islam, with around 95% of the population being Muslim. When visiting, it's good to be aware of cultural norms, especially when it comes to dressing modestly. Women are recommended to cover their shoulders and knees, particularly when visiting religious sites. Important religious holidays to keep in mind include Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, and Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice. Being respectful of these practices will enhance your experience in the country.
Senegal is in the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) zone, which means it does not observe daylight saving time. If it is 12pm in the UK, it will also be 12pm in Senegal. If it is 12pm on the East Coast of the USA (Eastern Standard Time), it will be 5pm in Senegal. On the West Coast of the USA (Pacific Standard Time), if it is 12pm, it will be 8pm in Senegal.
Senegal has a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons, and weather can vary slightly depending on the region.
- Coastal areas like Dakar have a cooler, ocean-moderated climate. The best time to visit is from November to May, during the dry season, with temperatures around 24-30°C (75-86°F).
- Inland regions, such as Tambacounda, experience hotter and more extreme temperatures, especially from March to June, reaching up to 40°C (104°F).
- The rainy season runs from June to October, bringing heavy rains and humidity, particularly in the south.
For the best weather, plan your visit between November and May.
Senegal uses the West African CFA franc (XOF). The daily exchange rate is roughly 0.0013 GBP, 0.0015 USD, and 0.0014 EUR to 1 XOF. You can exchange currency at banks, exchange bureaus, and sometimes at hotels.
Find out the entry requirements for Senegal, and, if needed, apply for your visa through our partner Sherpa.
Before traveling, always remember to check the government website of your country of origin for updates on the entry requirements for Senegal – you wouldn’t want to stay home due to a bureaucratic detail!
- UK residents: review the FCDO Travel Advice.
- US residents: consult the US Department of State Travel Advice.
- Other residents: refer to your government or local consulate's travel advice.

The question of all questions! Here’s some more information:
-
The Money Pot is a common fund collected in local currency from all travellers on the trip and managed by your Travel Coordinator;
-
It is used to streamline payments for extra activities, goods and services that the whole group decides to do. This guarantees flexibility in choosing activities and excursions at the destination in line with the mood of the group;
-
It is typically collected on the first day of the trip in local currency, although at times, the Travel Coordinator may ask for it to be paid before departure;
- You’ll find the Money Pot amount on the website under the section ‘What’s included in the Money Pot’. To find this look for ‘What’s included’, scroll down to ‘Money Pot? Click here’ and you’ll find the details.
-
The amount varies depending on the destination chosen;
-
It is usually used for group expenses that all travellers decide to take part in, but sometimes if you opt out of an activity it might make more sense for it to come out of the Money Pot. In these cases the Coordinator will return the amount for this activity back to you at the end of the trip;
-
It is estimated based on the experience of other groups but can vary depending on what activities your group is keen for. As such, the Travel Coordinator may need to increase the amount during the trip;
-
If not all of the Money Pot is spent, the difference will be returned to all travellers at the end of the trip;
-
The Money Pot also covers the Travel Coordinator’s share of the activities included in the Money Pot, except for those activities that are free for the Travel Coordinator;
-
If you pay in advance for part of the Money Pot before the trip for certain non-refundable optional activities, unfortunately, the amount cannot be refunded if the trip is cancelled;
- Activities paid through the Money Pot: they are carried out by third-party local suppliers and their conditions apply; WeRoad does not intervene in their management nor assumes any responsibility. For details on the money pot, see the General Terms and Conditions
We offer several payment methods to fit every need:
1. Credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express);
2. Instalment payment with Klarna (you’ll pay for the trip in three equal amounts);
3. PayPal (for selected destinations);
4. Revolut Pay to pay even faster straight from your Revolut account.
Yes, but the available options depend on the status of your trip and when you make the request.

For our trips we usually use locally owned accommodation instead of big hotel chains. It’s our favourite way to really experience the local culture and, whenever we can, support the local economy. Typically, you’ll stay in hotels, apartments, guesthouses and hostels with the same standard maintained across all trips in the same destination.
The list of accommodation for your trip will be shared with you by your Travel Coordinator 2-5 days before departure, along with other useful details for your adventure!
Yes! We might not know the flights for everyone else in the group, but there are ways to find out which flights your fellow WeRoaders will be taking.
1. All travellers can share their flight details after booking on their My WeRoad account so that other travellers on the same trip can see these details anonymously.
2. Alternatively you can join our Facebook group: Solo Travellers | WeRoad Community – (here is the extended link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/963298767843213 ) Look for a post about the trip you’re interested in or ask the group admin for help in getting in touch with your future travel companions!
3. If the Coordinator has already been assigned to the trip you’re keen for, you can easily find their Facebook post on the website. Click 'Ask the Coordinator' and follow the link here.
Generally, our groups have an average of 11 people. Everyone on our trips speaks English, and travellers join us from across the UK, Europe and beyond. Our trips are open to travelers between 25 and 49 years old. The indicated age is meant to give you an idea of the type of group, but it's not a strict limit: it's possible to participate even with a few years more or less, as long as you can keep up with the pace and energy of the group you're traveling with.
Each group will be joined and led by one of our experienced Travel Coordinators, who’s there to ensure everything runs smoothly and the group feels well-supported.
If you’d like to know more about our typical WeRoad groups do reach out to us on WhatsApp on +44 7716573700.
Yes! If you're curious, you can take a sneak peek at the group before booking.
You’ll find the info in the ‘Group’ section for each trip on the departures page, showing how many WeRoaders have already booked.
Click the little arrow and you’ll even see their gender and ages – but hey, that’s exclusive info, so we’ll ask you to log in or sign up to see that!
For some trips, in the itinerary section, you’ll find the number of nights and the location (not the hotel) where you’ll be spending the night(s). The location shown is the one we usually go for on most trips, but in some cases, you might stay in a nearby town. This will depend on logistics or availability of accommodation.
The list of accommodation for your trip (and therefore also the exact locations) will be shared by your Travel Coordinator 2-5 days before departure, along with other useful information for your adventure!
The WeRoad Travel Coordinator is an experienced and skilled traveller who will be the perfect companion for your trip. They will manage all the logistical aspects of the itinerary like transport, timings, accommodation, restaurant bookings and meeting points, so that you can enjoy the trip without this hassle. They’re there to support the group, ensure everything runs smoothly and will no doubt make the trip a lot of fun along the way too!
The Coordinator will set up a WhatsApp group approximately 2 weeks before departure. This will be the moment to ask any pre-departure questions and get to know the rest of the group! If the trip you are interested in already has a Travel Coordinator assigned, you can contact them before booking. Their details will be on the trip page, or you can search for their name here. After booking, you will find their contact details in your My WeRoad account, under ‘Bookings and Trips’ > ‘Your Upcoming Trips’ > ‘Trip Details’.
Yes, on all our trips you will share a room with other WeRoaders in your group. By default this will be people of the same gender, unless you tick ‘I'm OK with a mixed gender room’ when you book. The bathroom will either be private or shared only with other travellers on the trip. The rooms might be twins, triples, quadruples or multi-share (up to 8 people in exceptional cases), depending on the destination and availability.
You will never share with people from outside of the WeRoad group, except in certain cases for local experiences, which are specifically mentioned in the itinerary or communicated before booking. These typically involve specific nights in unique accommodation like tents, homestays, or camping, offering a more adventurous travel experience in exchange for some comfort.
On some of our trips we can offer a private room for an additional cost. Just tick the ‘Private Room’ option at checkout to get this added. For some of our trips if you book as two travellers together you can add this private room free of charge. Look out for this option at checkout.
Please note that if you do book a private room with a friend/partner this could be either a double or a twin room so please email hello@weroad.com if you have a preference on this.
When you set off on a WeRoad trip, you’re officially a WeRoader – and as we often say, 'once a WeRoader, always a WeRoader'. This means that once you’re part of the community, a little piece of WeRoad will always stay with you.
But you’re not just a WeRoader during your trips, far from it! The community is alive and active all year round: you can stay in touch by following and interacting on our social media channels, like the Facebook group or the Instagram profile. You can also come along to one of our many events that we run in different cities worldwide. Check out and sign up to our events by downloading the WeMeet app here.
