Itinerary

Are you ready to explore Sri Lanka's rich culture , breathtaking landscapes , ancient history , and traditions? This fascinating country deserves to be discovered, but we want to make your trip even more extraordinary by taking advantage of its privileged geographical location to spread our wings to a true paradise: the Maldives!

Our journey will begin in Negombo, a charming seaside town about half an hour from the capital, Colombo, and will take us on an adventurous journey across the island, revealing the jealously guarded secrets of this magnificent land. We'll pass through Anaradhapura, Sigiriya, Minneriya National Park, Dambulla, Kandy, and then board the world's most famous train to reach Ella . On the return journey to Colombo, we'll make an exciting stop to test our muscles with a rafting session , before heading to the hotel to pack our bags (and swimsuits): the Maldives awaits!

With slightly sore muscles, we will fly to the Maldives , immersing ourselves in four days of pure and total relaxation on the Maafushi Atoll.

An unforgettable tour to discover the "teardrop of India" and the Maafushi Atoll, which will take us through the nature and architectural wonders of Sri Lanka, exploring its deep-rooted religious traditions, and then dedicating ourselves to the sun and relaxation on the white beaches of the Maldives.

Check-in

Roundtrip flights or transportation to reach the destination are not included in the package, so you can decide from where and when you want to leave! This gives you complete freedom of choice to adjust your travel itinerary to your needs. We recommend flying into Colombo, the vibrant capital of Sri Lanka, and then taking a taxi (around 30 minutes) to our first destination: Negombo.

Why Negombo? Simple – we believe every great adventure should begin with the sea breeze on your face and a stunning ocean view to set the mood.

Once you’ve checked in at our hotel in Negombo, we’ll kick things off with a welcome meeting — here’s where the magic begins! Just a short distance from Colombo, we’re perfectly positioned at the gateway to an unforgettable journey. In the evening, we’ll get to know one another better and, as tradition has it, start forming the friendships that will make this trip truly special.

The journey begins

We rise at dawn and set off towards our first destination: Anuradhapura, located within Sri Lanka’s renowned Cultural Triangle. More than just a city, Anuradhapura is a vast open-air historical park, rich with the evocative ruins of past civilisations.

Guided by a local expert, we’ll uncover the secrets of this extraordinary place as we prepare for a truly spiritual experience — walking barefoot among its sacred Buddhist sites. The city is celebrated for its remarkable archaeological and architectural wonders, a legacy that has earned it the prestigious recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Did you know that Anuradhapura is home to the ancient sacred tree beneath which Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, attained enlightenment? Pilgrims from across the world travel here to pay their respects to this living symbol of spirituality. Perhaps, in this deeply sacred setting, we too will discover our own moment of enlightenment.

Good morning, WeRoaders! Ready to fuel up with a hearty breakfast? Today’s itinerary is filled with unforgettable experiences as we make our way to Minneriya National Park, a renowned wildlife sanctuary in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province. This incredible park is celebrated for its rich biodiversity, particularly its thriving population of majestic Asian elephants.

During the dry season (from June to September), it’s not uncommon to witness hundreds of elephants gathering around the Minneriya Tank, a vast man-made reservoir, alongside other remarkable wildlife such as leopards, sloth bears, sambar deer, and an impressive variety of bird species. Of course, nature is unpredictable, and while sightings can never be guaranteed, this extraordinary spectacle of wildlife is always worth the journey.

After a delicious lunch in a local village, we continue our adventure to Sigiriya, also known as the magnificent Lion Rock, a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ascent to the summit is a rewarding challenge, but the sweeping panoramic views that await at the top make every step worthwhile.

A day of history and culture

A journey without a sunrise is like a cake without flour — it simply doesn’t make sense. So rise and shine, because an unforgettable experience awaits: the dawn climb to Pidurangala Rock.

We’ll set off for the trailhead bright and early, usually around 4:30–5:00 a.m., while it’s still dark — so don’t forget a torch or headlamp, as they’re essential for the ascent. Reaching the summit in time for sunrise means we’ll secure the perfect spot to witness the first light of day, a truly magical moment. As the sun’s rays slowly illuminate the landscape, the view of Sigiriya in the distance is nothing short of breathtaking.

After soaking in the sunrise, we’ll have time to explore the area, home to an ancient Buddhist temple and the atmospheric ruins of a monastery. The descent is far easier in daylight, and we’ll return to the hotel in time to enjoy a well-deserved, hearty breakfast.

Our journey then continues to Dambulla, where we’ll explore its fascinating rock cave temples, before heading onwards to our final destination of the day — the vibrant city of Kandy.

Nuwara Eliya and The train to Ella

This morning, we bid farewell to Kandy and make our way to Nuwara Eliya, where a visit to one of the region’s iconic tea plantations is an absolute must. Tasting this beloved beverage straight from the artisan factories where the leaves are hand-processed is an unforgettable experience — and, of course, tea always makes the perfect souvenir to take home.

After our visit, we’ll enjoy a quick lunch before moving on to one of the true highlights of the trip: a breathtaking panoramic train journey that will carry us directly to Ella.

The train ride from Nuwara Eliya to Ella is widely regarded as one of the most scenic and spectacular railway journeys in the world. As we wind our way through landscapes of lush tea plantations, rolling green valleys, and dramatic bridges and tunnels carved into the rock, we’ll be treated to unforgettable views at every turn. Along the route, we’ll witness tea fields stretching endlessly into the horizon, Tamil women carefully picking the leaves by hand, and sweeping vistas of mist-draped hills.

A particular highlight is the iconic Nine Arches Bridge, where the train glides across a series of nine elegant stone arches — a moment that perfectly captures the charm and beauty of Sri Lanka’s hill country.

Discovering Ella

For the more adventurous among us, the alarm will ring well before dawn as we set off towards Little Adam’s Peak. And why, you ask? The reason is simple — reaching the summit of Little Adam’s Peak is one of the most memorable experiences you can have in Ella.

The summit is easily accessible without a guide, thanks to a clearly marked trail that leads us to the top just in time to witness a spectacular sunrise. Starting from Ella’s main road, the hike typically takes less than an hour, making it the perfect early-morning adventure.

Once we’ve soaked in the beauty of the sunrise, we’ll follow another path towards the iconic Nine Arches Bridge, before continuing on to Ella Rock, where sweeping panoramic views await us — a truly breathtaking reward for our efforts.

After covering so much ground today, we’ll have more than earned a refreshing beer to celebrate. And of course, we’ll round off the day with plenty of delicious food — the perfect end to an unforgettable hike.

Let's tackle the rapids

Here’s some good news — today you can sleep… but on the bus!

We have a long journey ahead, with many kilometres separating us from Colombo, so we’ll set off early and let the right playlist set the mood for a relaxing journey. Sit back, get comfortable, and catch up on some well-earned rest as we make our way across the country.

Once we’re refreshed, it’s time to put our upper bodies to the test. After days of walking and working our legs, today we switch things up — did someone say rafting? Get ready for an adrenaline-fuelled adventure that’s sure to get the heart racing and the arms pumping.

After our daily dose of action, we’ll get back on the road for the final stretch — around two more hours separate us from Colombo, the vibrant capital of Sri Lanka. Here, we’ll spend the night already dreaming of what’s next. Tomorrow, a new chapter begins: the Maldives, here we come!

What do we do for 3 days in the Maldives?

n the Maldives, you can do everything… or absolutely nothing at all — the choice is entirely yours. But with such extraordinary marine life surrounding us, it would be a shame not to dive in and discover it, wouldn’t it?

To give you a little inspiration, here’s how we could spend our three days in paradise:

Day 1: Swim alongside majestic whale sharks — a once-in-a-lifetime experience you’ll never forget.

Day 2: Spend a blissful day on the idyllic island of Gulhi, soaking up the sun and exploring its crystal-clear waters.

Day 3: Indulge in pure luxury with a full day at a world-class resort, where relaxation reaches a whole new level.

And that’s just the beginning. There’s also the opportunity to go diving or snorkelling, try your hand at a range of exciting water sports, or simply relax on the beach and let the ocean breeze do the rest. In the Maldives, every moment is yours to shape.

FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

About this trip

What are the meeting and departure details for this trip?

This trip starts in Colombo. On the first day, we’ll meet at 18:00

Your coordinator will add you to the WhatsApp group for your trip about 15 days before departure.
It’s a great way to start getting to know your travel mates, receive more details about the first day’s meeting point, and ask any pre-departure questions you might have.

The first hotel is located in Negombo, 30 minutes by taxi from Colombo, the capital: you will therefore need to purchase flights to this city. For the departure day, the first available time for the speedboat is 6 AM, so it is essential to purchase your return flight not before 9 AM and preferably later, anticipating possible delays due to bad weather). For further information, contact your coordinator.

This trip ends in Maafushi. The trip officially ends at 09:00 on the last day, so we recommend planning your return transfers accordingly. For example:

  • if you need to book a flight, consider the time needed to reach the airport and complete check-in procedures;
  • if you need to book a train or continue your journey independently, consider the time required to reach the station or your next destination.

If you have any doubts, you can contact the coordinator assigned to your departure for advice.

Is there anything else I should be aware of regarding the physical effort of this trip?

The pace of the trip is to be considered sustained exclusively in the first part of the trip (Sri Lanka). The second part of the trip will be entirely for relaxation.

What kind of luggage can I bring with me on this trip?

For this itinerary, you can choose the type of luggage you prefer – we always recommend a backpack, but you can also travel with a duffel bag, a holdall, or (it breaks our heart to say it) a cabin trolley case or a checked suitcase, as long as it’s moderate in size. Our Travel Coordinator will suggest the ideal luggage before departure in the WhatsApp group!

About Sri Lanka

What are the entry requirements for Sri Lanka?

If you are a UK citizen, to find out the entry requirements for Sri Lanka, you can check this informational page from our partner Sherpa. If you need a visa, you can apply for it through Sherpa. If you are not a UK citizen, you can still use Sherpa by changing the nationality in the 'Passport' section.

Before traveling, always remember to check the government website of your country of origin for updates on the entry requirements for Sri Lanka – you wouldn’t want to stay home due to a bureaucratic detail!

What's the time zone in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka is in the Sri Lanka Standard Time zone, which is 5 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+5:30). Sri Lanka does not observe daylight saving time. If it is 12pm in the UK, it will be 5:30pm in Sri Lanka. If it is 12pm in New York, USA, it will be 10:30pm in Sri Lanka. Keep this in mind when planning calls or activities involving multiple time zones.

Which currency is used in Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka uses the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) as its currency.

  • 1 British Pound (GBP) is approximately 500 LKR
  • 1 US Dollar (USD) is around 320 LKR

You can exchange currency at banks, exchange bureaus, and sometimes hotels. It is advisable to exchange currency at official places to get a better rate and avoid counterfeit notes.

How can I pay in Sri Lanka?

Credit cards, debit cards, and cash are widely accepted in Sri Lanka. Most hotels, restaurants, and shops in urban areas accept cards, but it's a good idea to carry cash for smaller businesses and rural areas. ATMs are available in cities and towns, allowing you to withdraw cash using international cards. It's always best to inform your bank about your travel plans to avoid any issues with card transactions.

Do I need to tip in Sri Lanka?

In Sri Lanka, tipping is a common practice and a nice way to show appreciation for good service. While it's not mandatory, we suggest you tip in the following situations:

  • At restaurants, around 10% of the bill if a service charge isn't included.
  • For hotel staff, like porters, around 100-200 Sri Lankan Rupees.
  • For taxi drivers, you can round up the fare.

These small gestures are appreciated by service workers.

What's the internet like in Sri Lanka? Should I buy a SIM card? How available is Wi-Fi?

In Sri Lanka, buying a local SIM card or an e-SIM data plan is a great idea for staying connected. Major providers like Dialog, Mobitel, and Airtel offer affordable options with good coverage across the country. Always check your devices are compatible with 230V to avoid any issues.

About WeRoad

Are flights included?

Return international flights are not included on our trips because we want to give you full autonomy and flexibility. You can choose your preferred airline, fly from the airport that works best for you, and decide how many stopovers you want to make along the way.

As flights are not included, you also have more flexibility with your travel dates: you could arrive at your destination a few days early or return home a bit later – or even continue independently to a nearby destination!

What does the "Available" status mean?

to-confirm.svg

An "Available" departure means that the trip isn’t confirmed yet and we’re waiting for a few more travellers to sign up… which could be you!

If you book the trip please wait for it to be confirmed before booking your international flights.

What is the Money Pot and how does it work?

The question of all questions! Here’s some more information:

  • The Money Pot is a common fund collected in local currency from all travellers on the trip and managed by your Travel Coordinator.
  • It is used to streamline payments for extra activities, goods and services that the whole group decides to do. This guarantees flexibility in choosing activities and excursions at the destination in line with the mood of the group.
  • It is typically collected on the first day of the trip in local currency, although at times, the Travel Coordinator may ask for it to be paid before departure.
  • You’ll find the Money Pot amount on the website under the section ‘What’s included in the Money Pot’. To find this look for ‘What’s included’, scroll down to ‘Money Pot? Click here’ and you’ll find the details.
  • The amount varies depending on the destination chosen.
  • It is usually used for group expenses that all travellers decide to take part in, but sometimes if you opt out of an activity it might make more sense for it to come out of the Money Pot. In these cases the Coordinator will return the amount for this activity back to you at the end of the trip.
  • It is estimated based on the experience of other groups but can vary depending on what activities your group is keen for. As such, the Travel Coordinator may need to increase the amount during the trip.
  • If not all of the Money Pot is spent, the difference will be returned to all travellers at the end of the trip.
  • The Money Pot also covers the Travel Coordinator’s share of the activities included in the Money Pot, except for those activities that are free for the Travel Coordinator.
  • If you pay in advance for part of the Money Pot before the trip for certain non-refundable optional activities, unfortunately, the amount cannot be refunded if the trip is cancelled.
What payment methods can I use?

We offer several payment methods to fit every need:

1. Credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express);
2. Instalment payment with Klarna (you’ll pay for the trip in three equal amounts);
3. PayPal (for selected destinations);
4. Revolut Pay to pay even faster straight from your Revolut account.

Can I cancel or modify my booking?

Anyone who books a WeRoad trip has the option to cancel or modify the trip – including both the dates and the destination – free of charge up to 31 days before departure. In case of cancellation up to 31 days before departure, you will receive a 100% refund of the WeRoad trip price. If you make a change, a price adjustment will be applied to the new trip chosen – meaning, if the new trip is cheaper, we will refund the difference; if it’s more expensive, you will need to pay the difference.

If you’ve purchased the Flexible Cancellation Option (which you can add in the first step of the booking process), you can request a cancellation or trip change until 8 days before departure. In case of cancellation, you’ll receive a 100% refund of the WeRoad trip price, minus the cost of the Flexible Cancellation option.

You can do it directly from your personal MyWeRoad account!

Within your booking you will find the "Change Your Trip" section at the bottom right, just underneath your booking details. You will be able to select a different date for the same trip, or a different trip entirely. Whether you are able to change the trip depends on the cancellation terms of your booking. For your original booking if you selected the Private Room, Flexible Cancellation or entered any discount code, gift card or voucher, before confirming the change we will let you know if anything isn't applicable to the new trip and you can decide whether to proceed or not. If you have any issues please do get in touch with the WeRoad team and we'll be able to help.

It's not possible to move to a 'sold out' trip and with any trips that are 'on request' we will need to check availability with our local partners so please do get in touch if you want to move to an 'on request' trip. Please bear in mind that if the trip has the 'final spots' status, there may be no places left in either the male or female room.

How to request a cancellation or change to your trip? Send us an email at [email protected] or a WhatsApp on +447716573700. Please share the booking reference for the trip you want to cancel or change, and, in case of a change, the new trip you would like to join.

What type of accommodation should I expect on your trips?

For our trips we usually use locally owned accommodation instead of big hotel chains. It’s our favourite way to really experience the local culture and, whenever we can, support the local economy. Typically, you’ll stay in hotels, apartments, guesthouses and hostels with the same standard maintained across all trips in the same destination.

The list of accommodation for your trip will be shared with you by your Travel Coordinator 2-5 days before departure, along with other useful details for your adventure!

Can I find out my travel groups' flights?

Yes! We might not know the flights for everyone else in the group, but there are ways to find out which flights your fellow WeRoaders will be taking.

1. All travellers can share their flight details after booking on their My WeRoad account so that other travellers on the same trip can see these details anonymously.

2. Alternatively you can join our Facebook group: Solo Travellers | WeRoad Community – (here is the extended link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/963298767843213 ) Look for a post about the trip you’re interested in or ask the group admin for help in getting in touch with your future travel companions!

3. If the Coordinator has already been assigned to the trip you’re keen for, you can easily find their Facebook post on the website. Click 'Ask the Coordinator' and follow the link here.

Click the little arrow and you’ll even see their gender and ages – but hey, that’s exclusive info, so we’ll ask you to log in or sign up to see that!

If a location is mentioned, is it guaranteed that we’ll spend the night there?

For some trips, in the itinerary section, you’ll find the number of nights and the location (not the hotel) where you’ll be spending the night(s). The location shown is the one we usually go for on most trips, but in some cases, you might stay in a nearby town. This will depend on logistics or availability of accommodation.

The list of accommodation for your trip (and therefore also the exact locations) will be shared by your Travel Coordinator 2-5 days before departure, along with other useful information for your adventure!

Who is the Travel Coordinator and what is their role on the trip?

The WeRoad Travel Coordinator is an experienced and skilled traveller who will be the perfect companion for your trip. They will manage all the logistical aspects of the itinerary like transport, timings, accommodation, restaurant bookings and meeting points, so that you can enjoy the trip without this hassle. They’re there to support the group, ensure everything runs smoothly and will no doubt make the trip a lot of fun along the way too!

The Coordinator will set up a WhatsApp group approximately 2 weeks before departure. This will be the moment to ask any pre-departure questions and get to know the rest of the group! If the trip you are interested in already has a Travel Coordinator assigned, you can contact them before booking. Their details will be on the trip page, or you can search for their name here. After booking, you will find their contact details in your My WeRoad account, under ‘Bookings and Trips’ > ‘Your Upcoming Trips’ > ‘Trip Details’.

Will I be sharing a room?

Yes, on all our trips you will share a room with other WeRoaders in your group. By default this will be people of the same gender, unless you tick ‘I'm OK with a mixed gender room’ when you book. The bathroom will either be private or shared only with other travellers on the trip. The rooms might be twins, triples, quadruples or multi-share (up to 8 people in exceptional cases), depending on the destination and availability.

You will never share with people from outside of the WeRoad group, except in certain cases for local experiences, which are specifically mentioned in the itinerary or communicated before booking. These typically involve specific nights in unique accommodation like tents, homestays, or camping, offering a more adventurous travel experience in exchange for some comfort.

On some of our trips we can offer a private room for an additional cost. Just tick the ‘Private Room’ option at checkout to get this added. For some of our trips if you book as two travellers together you can add this private room free of charge. Look out for this option at checkout.

Please note that if you do book a private room with a friend/partner this could be either a double or a twin room so please email [email protected] if you have a preference on this.

How can I be part of the WeRoad community?

When you set off on a WeRoad trip, you’re officially a WeRoader – and as we often say, 'once a WeRoader, always a WeRoader'. This means that once you’re part of the community, a little piece of WeRoad will always stay with you.

But you’re not just a WeRoader during your trips, far from it! The community is alive and active all year round: you can stay in touch by following and interacting on our social media channels, like the Facebook group or the Instagram profile. You can also come along to one of our many events that we run in different cities worldwide. Check out and sign up to our events by downloading the WeMeet app here
