Itinerary

A Gothenburg weekend on Sweden's west coast, three days split between the city and its southern archipelago. We start in Gothenburg itself, among elegant boulevards, picturesque canals and the cobbled streets of Haga, the oldest neighborhood. Day two is the sea: a ferry to the car-free islands of Styrsö and Donsö, a hike up to Stora Rös, fika at a local café and seafood by the harbour. The last day stays on land, with Nordic wildlife in Slottsskogen Park, a leisurely Sunday brunch and the Universeum science center. The balance is even: urban culture and food on either side of a full day of rugged coastline, rocky trails and quiet coves.

Ornate European buildings with a red turret stand along a street with leafy green trees and a sign reading 'BRUNCHOTEKET'.

City visit!

The weekend opens in the heart of Gothenburg, a city whose boulevards, canals and lively squares still read as maritime.

  • We stroll through Haga, Gothenburg's oldest neighborhood, all cobbled streets and colorful wooden houses, with independent boutiques and inviting cafés to duck into along the way.

  • There is time too for local landmarks and unhurried browsing: that is Sweden's second-largest city, vibrant but laid-back, with history and everyday Swedish life within walking distance.

A person lies on a rocky shore, looking out over a calm lake with a small, tree-covered island in the distance.

Off to the island

Today we leave the mainland behind. The southern archipelago is car-free, and out here the granite does most of the talking.

  • On Styrsö we hike to Stora Rös, the island's highest point, for panoramas over the archipelago and open sea past granite cliffs and picturesque fishing villages.

  • Then fika at a local café, taken slowly, before a small bridge carries us over to Donsö, a tranquil island where nature and maritime traditions sit side by side.

  • Winding coastal paths there turn up hidden coves and sun-warmed rocks. We end by the harbour with the freshest seafood at Isbolaget, evening light still on the water.

Two young moose calves with small antlers are resting on a grassy hill in a wooded area with rocks.

Sunday relax

Last day, and it stays in the city: Gothenburg's green heart first, then the two things a Sunday here is really for.

  • Slottsskogen Park is the city's green heart, walking paths through woodlands, open meadows and small lakes, with Nordic wildlife close at hand: moose, seals, deer and Gotland ponies.

  • Then a leisurely Sunday brunch, a local tradition taken seriously, with Scandinavian specialties, freshly baked treats and excellent coffee, in a café in no rush to turn the table.

  • In the afternoon we head to the Universeum, the largest science center in northern Europe, for its Indoor Rain Forest and Ocean Zone before we leave Sweden.
