Itinerary

Porto in a long weekend: three days on the azulejo-tiled hills above the Douro River, with the Ribeira riverfront, a Rabelo boat under the six bridges and Port Wine tasted in a cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia. Add the Francesinha, Mercado do Bolhão, Jardim do Morro at sunset and the Clérigos Tower climb: culture and food lead, with river views and downtime.

A minimalist map graphic indicating Porto as the start and end point for a trip, marked with a circular icon.
An empty stone hallway with Gothic arches and one wall entirely covered in a blue and white azulejo tile mural.

Arrival in the City of Bridges

Bem-vindo ao Porto. We land, drop the bags and walk straight into a city that stacks itself up above the water.

  • We start at São Bento Train Station, where 20,000 blue and white azulejo tiles tell the story of Portugal, then down to the Ribeira district and the riverfront.

  • Dinner is the legendary Francesinha challenge, Porto's iconic and decadent sandwich, then drinks in the galleries of Rua da Galeria de Paris, the heart of the city's nightlife.

Two traditional boats sail on a river in front of a hillside city with colorful buildings under a partly cloudy blue sky.

The Douro and the magic of Port

Today the city gets seen from the water and then from the far bank, which changes the shape of it completely.

  • The morning is a Six Bridges cruise on a traditional Rabelo boat, drifting under the monumental Dom Luís I Bridge to see Porto's architecture from below.

  • We cross to Vila Nova de Gaia, tour a historic cellar and taste different varieties of Port Wine, Tawny included, in rooms centuries older than us.

  • Sunset belongs to Jardim do Morro, one of the best views in Europe, and the day closes with a final group dinner over the Douro.

A close-up of freshly baked Portuguese egg tarts, Pastéis de Nata, with caramelized tops arranged on metal baking trays.

Panoramic heights and sweet treats

Last morning, and it goes upwards before it goes to the airport, with time for one more sweet stop on the way.

  • We climb Clérigos Tower for a 360-degree look at the city rooftops and the river beyond, the weekend laid out below in terracotta and tile.

  • Coffee and a warm Pastel de Nata while we browse the independent shops of the Cedofeita district, then goodbyes and the metro out for afternoon flights.
