Itinerary

Six days from the Maya underworld to the Caribbean: swim into the sacred ATM cave, climb a jungle pyramid with a view on Guatemala, snorkel with nurse sharks and rays, then go slow on the island with no cars.

Belize is small, speaks English and hides one of the most incredible adventures in Central America. We will start in the jungle of the Cayo District, around San Ignacio. Here, with a licensed guide, we will enter Actun Tunichil Muknal, the cave the Maya believed was the entrance to the underworld: we will wade through an underground river and climb into a cathedral of stone where ceramics and the crystallized skeleton of the Crystal Maiden have been waiting for over a thousand years. The day after we will cross the river on a hand-cranked ferry and climb El Castillo at Xunantunich, with Guatemala on the horizon.

Then we will move to the reef. Caye Caulker is an island with no cars and one rule written everywhere: go slow. Here we will trade shoes for bare feet and snorkel in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and in Shark Ray Alley, swimming with nurse sharks, stingrays and turtles on the second largest barrier reef in the world, and spend our last day between hammocks, fresh lobster and the sunset at The Split. Jungle and Caribbean, adventure and island life: the best of Belize in six days, and all in English!

The day we will remember. With licensed guides (one every six travelers) we will hike through the jungle, swim into the mouth of the ATM Cave and walk inside for about a kilometer among stalactites, Maya ceramics and the remains of human sacrifices, up to the Crystal Maiden. Cameras are not allowed: this one stays in our memory only.

Early morning among the temples of Cahal Pech, the Maya site that overlooks San Ignacio. Then hand-cranked ferry over the Mopan river and climb to the top of El Castillo at Xunantunich, 40 meters above the jungle, with Guatemala in front of us.

To the island

Drive to Belize City and fast water taxi (about 1 hour) to Caye Caulker. Welcome to the island: sand roads, golf carts and colorful houses.
