Itinerary
There's just one rule on this trip: forget your shoes! From now on, our mantra is flip-flops, flip-flops everywhere. We kick off in vibrant, chaotic, unique Rio de Janeiro, a cidade maravilhosa, where we spend the first 3 nights among ocean, forest, skyscrapers, miles of beaches, picturesque neighborhoods, favelas, museums and botanical gardens.
Then we fly north to the state of Maranhao, to Sao Luis: this is Northern Brazil, where white sand dunes dominate the landscape. We journey through the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, the Preguicas River and Barra Grande, then relax for a few days in Jericoacoara, for fish lunches, caipirinhas, hammocks at Lagoa Azul and postcard-perfect sunsets!

Welcome to Brazil!
Check-in, meeting and our first picanha
Flights to and from the destination are not included in the package, so you can decide where to fly from, at what time, and with the airline you prefer... This is to give you maximum freedom of choice.
Check-in at the hotel in Rio de Janeiro and welcome meeting: we immediately soak up the festive vibe in the city streets.
First dinner in Rio: to start with a bang, we find a typical restaurant and tuck into some local specialties. They're big on meat here, so... picanha?

Rio de Janeiro: Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf Mountain and Lapa
Through the streets of Rio
Our second day in Brazil is all about Rio: with our local guide, we discover the most famous neighborhoods.
Cathedral and Selarón Steps: we head to the Metropolitan Cathedral and the colorful Selarón Steps. Shall we add our names to the mural too?
Past the Sambadrome: then the Sambadrome and, to finish, Christ the Redeemer, the undisputed icon of the city and one of the seven wonders of the modern world.
Up to Christ the Redeemer: we go all the way to the top for panoramic views, with plenty of time for selfies and group photos.
Pão de Açùcar at sunset and carioca rhythm
In the afternoon, we move to another iconic spot in Rio.
Cable car up Sugarloaf: the Bondinho cable car takes us up Pão de Açùcar, Rio's symbolic mountain.
Sunset over the city: Copacabana, perhaps the most famous beach in the world, on one side and the center of Rio on the other. We stay until sunset, when everything becomes even more magical.
Carioca nightlife: then we head down into the city streets to soak up the carioca rhythm, between bars and clubs!

Copacabana and Ipanema
All about the beach... and what a beach!
After partying like true Cariocas, we dedicate this day to chilling out. Where to?
How about Ipanema? Ipanema, one of Rio's most beautiful beaches, mirrors the diverse character of Carioca society, with wide tree-lined avenues and outdoor bars where the samba never stops.
Or Copacabana? We could go for Copacabana, Rio's most famous beach and one of the best-known in the world.
Not a beach day? If the beach isn't your vibe, we could opt for a tour of the Rocinha favela: 300,000 inhabitants, the largest favela in the world, built in a chaotic way (an understatement!) on a steep hill in Rio de Janeiro's "Zona Sul".
Why visit a favela? Our answer: you go to Rocinha to break free from prejudice and truly understand what daily life is like there and how the favela is structured. And thanks to the work of many associations, the visit becomes a gesture of solidarity.

São Luís: the Brazilian Jamaica
Goodbye Rio, hello São Luís!
Goodbye Rio! This morning we wake up in Rio, but tonight we'll be sleeping in São Luís: we have a flight to catch!
Along the northern coast: from here, in the Maranhão region, our journey along the coast of northern Brazil begins, all the way to Fortaleza.
Across the dunes: we'll use every means possible, literally, and our drivers will take us along paths both known and unknown, often across endless sand dunes stretching to the horizon.
First taste of São Luís: we warm up the engines and start getting to know the local culture.
Historic center and reggae night
A stroll through the historic center of São Luís: pastel-colored colonial houses and cobblestone streets make it incredibly picturesque.
Reggae night? After dinner, we can go celebrate at one of the city's spots. Reggae is the most popular music here, so much so that São Luís is known as the "Brazilian Jamaica"!

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park: we're in paradise!
By jeep to Barreirinhas
An early start: our road trip begins today!
By jeep: we hop in the jeeps, and postcard-perfect landscapes out the window will make us want to stop every ten minutes.
Arrival in Barreirinhas: after about 4 hours on the road, we arrive in Barreirinhas, our base for excursions in the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.
The "sheets" of sand of Lagoa Bonita
After a quick lunch, we can't wait to see the magic of this park's landscape with our own eyes: rainwater lagoons surrounded by white sand dunes that look like unfurled sheets, hence the name "lencois", which means sheets.
A dip in Lagoa Bonita: after a morning of driving, it's the perfect time for a dip in the most famous and, according to everyone, the most beautiful lagoon, Lagoa Bonita.
Evening in Barreirinhas: back in town, we pick a spot that inspires us for dinner, and for after dinner too!

The "Little Lençóis" and the Preguiças River
Water and... air!
This morning we have the option to explore the mouth of the Rio Preguiças and the small fishing villages along its banks.
Boat to the "small Lençóis"? If we opt for this, from the boat we admire the "small Lençóis": slightly lower dunes, but no less fascinating!
Lunch in Barreirinhas: we head back just in time to grab a bite.
Up in a helicopter? For anyone who fancies it, there's the option to hop on a helicopter and fly over the Park: from the ground you can't grasp how spectacular these lagoons among the dunes are, a truly one-of-a-kind landscape. We think it's totally worth it!

From Barreirinhas to Parnaiba
The Parnaiba Delta and the Guaras Swarm
We say goodbye to Barreirinhas and head to Parnaiba, a picturesque colonial city built around the river delta of the same name: 73 islands rich in native vegetation and fauna that we can't miss exploring.
By boat through the mangroves: in Tutoia, a boat trip awaits through the stunning mangroves of the Parnaiba Delta, the third largest delta in the world after the Nile and the Mekong, flowing straight into the ocean.
Spotting the Guaras Swarm: we look out for the "Guaras Swarm" (bright red birds typical of the area), iguanas, caimans and monkeys.
Evening at Porto das Barcas? Back on dry land, we enjoy the evening, perhaps at Porto das Barcas on the banks of the Rio Igaracu, a former 19th-century commercial port area that now hosts restaurants, shops and local crafts.

We're arriving in Jijoca de Jericoacoara
On the road through the dunes!
Another day, another transfer! We hop back in the minivan and from Parnaiba we travel along dirt and paved roads.
Lunch in Tatajuba: we stop in Tatajuba, a lagoon village, for super fresh grilled fish and a nice cold beer.
Siesta in a hammock: after lunch, we can take a siesta swaying in one of the many hammocks by the shore.
Jeri, sunsets & caipirinhas!
Back on the "road", if we can even call it that, and we reach Jericoacoara just in time for sunset.
Sunset on Duna Por Do Sol: we race to the Duna Por Do Sol, pretty crowded at this hour: everyone wants to see the sun slide behind the ocean. If we're lucky, we might witness the rare green flash, a flicker of a few milliseconds the instant the sun disappears over the horizon.
Caipirinha in hand: stalls on the beach, and even up on the dune, make them to suit every taste. Pick your favorite fruit and toast to the adventure!
Night out in Jeri: the town center is buzzing, full of little bars and young surfers. Street food for dinner, then beach bars, live music venues and reggae bars until late.

Still Jeri: relax, kite surf or dune buggy?
Horseback riding, kite surfing or...
Good morning Jeri! Nobody here says the full Jericoacoara, and we follow tradition, saving ourselves any pronunciation blunders. Shoes and flip-flops can stay in the room: we can walk barefoot, because the streets are literally made of sand!
Horses, beach or kite surfing? We have a free day to spend however we like: a horseback ride along the sea, relaxing on the beach or a kite surfing lesson, as this is home to some of the most famous kite surfing schools in the world.
Out to the lagoons? Or, what we recommend, an excursion to the park's lagoons (besides raiding the super-stocked Havaianas shop!).
...still lagoons?
If the last option excites us, we hop into the dune buggies, small open-top cars perfect for driving through the dunes.
Hammocks at the lagoons: our expert driver takes us first to Lagoa Azul and then to Lagoa Paraiso, both with traditional hammocks right by the water, so we can relax in the sun and then cool off with a dip.
Sunset at Pedra Furada: at Pedra Furada, the "pierced rock", the magic happens when the setting sun aligns perfectly with the hole in the rocks. Don't forget your cameras!
Dinner in Jeri: Jeri's specialties or, for those craving something different, Italian, Japanese and Mexican restaurants: Jeri has something for everyone.
And after a hearty dinner, who could say no to some Brazilian energy?

Last day in Jeri: cocktails and relaxation!
Lagoons, hammocks and a sunset on horseback
One last day to soak up this little slice of paradise, all ours to fill with whatever we haven't managed to fit in so far.
Lagoon hopping: there are so many lagoons to explore, and we can spend the hours swimming in crystal-clear waters or in the sun and breeze, perhaps in a hammock with a refreshing cocktail or mocktail.
Kitesurfing, at last? If we haven't already, it's time for a kitesurfing lesson.
Sunset on horseback: to top it all off, the sunset on horseback. A moment we won't easily forget!

Fortaleza: returning to civilization
Last dinner and samba
Let's say "goodbye" to this paradise: today we head to Fortaleza, the final stop of our road trip in Northern Brazil.
Lunch on the way: again with fish and a beer (or why not a caipirinha, they make them really well here!).
Sunset drink in Fortaleza: returning to "civilization" after so many days among the dunes, barefoot on the sand, feels strange. The solution? A sunset cocktail or mocktail with a caipirinha!
Last dinner and samba: this evening, our last dinner together to relive every moment of the adventure, then a bar to let loose to the rhythm of samba.

Bye Bye Brazil!
