Itinerary

Some trips are about a city, some are about nature. This one is about both, and it fits in a long weekend. We start in San Francisco, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito and taking the ferry back, and we visit Alcatraz before a night out in the city.

Then we drive into the Sierra Nevada and spend two nights at a lodge at the gates of Yosemite. We hike the Mist Trail to Vernal Fall with a local guide and watch the sun set over Half Dome from Glacier Point. Fog, sequoias and granite: California has range!

We start at the Ferry Building, not in an airport shuttle

Round-trip flights are not included, so you choose where and when to fly from. Check the Find your flight section for some options.

We meet in San Francisco in the afternoon. First stop: the bay!

  • Along the Embarcadero: a first walk along the Embarcadero, from the Ferry Building to the piers.

  • Welcome dinner in North Beach: our first dinner together in North Beach, the city's Italian quarter, to meet the group.

Golden Gate Bridge

Alcatraz Island from San Francisco

We cross the Golden Gate under our own steam and come back by boat

Two wheels, one bridge and the most famous prison in the world: what a day!

  • Cycling the Golden Gate: we rent bikes and ride along the bay to the Golden Gate Bridge, cross it and roll down to Sausalito for lunch by the water. We come back by ferry, with the skyline in front of us.

  • Inside Alcatraz: in the afternoon we take the boat to Alcatraz and walk through the prison with the audio tour.

  • Tacos, rooftop or cable car? The evening is ours: Mission District tacos, a rooftop bar or a cable car ride.

Yosemite Valley view
El Capitan in Yosemite

We arrive in Yosemite Valley in the afternoon light, when the day-trippers leave

We drive east through the Central Valley and up into the Sierra Nevada, and enter Yosemite from the west. Ready for the view?

  • The postcard from Tunnel View: first stop at Tunnel View, with El Capitan, Half Dome and Bridalveil Fall in one frame.

  • On the valley floor: a walk on the floor of Yosemite Valley before heading to our lodge.

Waterfall in the morning, Half Dome at sunset: our big day in Yosemite!

  • Hiking the Mist Trail: with a local guide we hike the Mist Trail to Vernal Fall, climbing stone steps right next to the waterfall. Bring a rain jacket: the name is not a joke.

  • Sunset at Glacier Point: in the evening we drive up to Glacier Point, 1,000 meters above the valley, for sunset over Half Dome.

  • Farewell dinner: back at the lodge, our last dinner together.
