Check-in and a welcome toast in Quito

Flights to/from the UK are not included in the package, giving you the freedom to choose your preferred departure airport, time, and airline.

Our adventure starts in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, also known as San Francisco de Quito. It sits in the central-northern region of the country, is home to over two million people and is the political and economic hub of Ecuador, with a rich cultural and tourist scene.

  • Check-in and welcome meeting: Upon arrival in Quito we check in to our hotel and have a welcome meeting.

  • A first toast: We kick things off with a celebratory toast to the start of our journey together.

Let the adventure begin!

Let's get acclimatised: Otavalo market or adventure?

Quito sits almost 3,000 meters above sea level, so today we take it easy and give our bodies time to adjust to the altitude. We have a couple of options for the day:

  • Fancy the Otavalo market? We can visit the famous Otavalo market, known for its indigenous handicrafts, where we browse the stalls and see the daily life of the locals.

  • A stop in Cayambe: On the way to Otavalo we can stop in Cayambe to taste and learn about the city's famous bizcochos, a local biscuit.

  • Laguna Cuicocha and Cotacachi: We can also explore some stunning sights outside the city: the picturesque Laguna Cuicocha, set in a volcanic crater with two lush green islands, and finally Cotacachi, a town famous for its leather goods.

  • Prefer a more active day? Alternatively, we can organise a high-adrenaline experience with a zip line and tubing along the river.

No need to decide now, but keep it in mind as an option!

Hiking below the snow-capped volcano

An early start today: we're heading to Cotopaxi National Park, home to three volcanoes.

  • Below Cotopaxi: The most famous is Cotopaxi, one of the largest active volcanoes in the world and the second highest in Ecuador at 5,897 meters above sea level. Climbing it is quite challenging and not part of our itinerary.

  • Hiking around the base: We follow the winding paths through the park, hiking around the base of the snow-capped volcano. Keep your eyes open for foxes, white-tailed deer and Brazilian rabbits.

The untouched nature is what makes it so fascinating: the park is home to over 90 species of birds, including hummingbirds, alpine condors, caracaras, ducks, Andean gulls and lapwings, and we may also spot mammals like deer, hares, Andean foxes and pumas.

Straight out of a painting

Prepare to be amazed: today we arrive at Quilotoa.

  • Quilotoa from above: The view from above is simply stunning.

  • Down and up the caldera: We descend to the lakeshore and then climb back up the steep walls of the caldera, at almost 4,000 meters above sea level. It will literally take your breath away!

Lake Quilotoa sits in the caldera of a dormant volcano, formed in 1280 after the volcano's last eruption, and is one of the must-see stops on any Ecuador trip. Intense blue and turquoise reflections, green mountains and white clouds: a real painting that we get to walk into!

Lunch with the Salasacas

Today we visit Salasaca, a community in the Tungurahua province of central Ecuador. The Salasacas speak only Spanish and Quichua, and agriculture, livestock and handicrafts are their main economic activities.

  • Tapestries on ancient looms: The Salasacas weave handcrafted tapestries on ancient looms, and many designs depict aspects of their daily lives.

  • The Square of the Arts: In the central square there is a market known as the “Square of the Arts”, where these handicrafts can be found.

  • Lunch with the community: We enjoy lunch in the community before continuing towards Baños.

On the hunt for adventures

Good morning, Baños! We wake up in Baños de Agua Santa, a charming small town popular with backpackers from all over Ecuador. It's no surprise why: here we can find waterfalls, hot springs, picture-perfect spots and a plethora of adventure sports.

  • Along the route of the waterfalls: Raincoats on! We follow the “ruta de las cascadas” (route of the waterfalls) to “el Pailón del Diablo”, a stunning waterfall that can be reached along a lush green path.

  • Up for the swing? Quick stop at Casa Del Arbol, where anyone who wants can ride the famous swing that seems suspended in the air.

  • Thermal waters at sunset: Then a dip in the warm thermal waters, perhaps waiting for the sunset with a cold beer.

And at night, between lively nightlife and colourful festivals, who knows what Baños will offer us!

Arriving in Tena

Some leisure time this morning, then a private transfer takes us to Tena in the Amazon region, our base for the next two nights.

  • Dinner with the community: We've already received a dinner invitation, and we simply cannot refuse! We share a meal with the Valencian community.

  • Up for a night hike? After dinner, if we're up for it, we can also go on a night hike to explore the forest.

Let's immerse ourselves in nature

We wake up to the sounds of the jungle and the smell of fresh coffee: after a delicious breakfast, the whole day is ours to explore the surroundings. There are plenty of options:

  • Craving adrenaline? River rafting is one of the most popular activities in the Amazon: fast, turbulent rivers, with safety gear and a guide to navigate the rapids.

  • Prefer to stay on land? We can go on a guided hike through the forest to learn about its plants and animals, maybe spotting monkeys or a colourful macaw, or try a canopy walk on suspended bridges high up in the trees.

  • Rather slow down? If we just want to relax, we can take a leisurely boat ride down the river, find a quiet spot to meditate or soak in the natural hot springs of the area.

Whatever we choose, let's take it all in!

Relax and then return to Quito

We bid farewell to the Amazon and head back towards Quito, with one last stop on the way and a range of activities to choose from.

  • Stop at Papallacta: The rejuvenating Papallacta Baths, in the protected area of Canyon Ranch, greet us with breathtaking views of the majestic Antisana volcano in the distance.

  • Fancy a walk? We can explore the scenic surroundings on foot, breathe the fresh mountain air and perhaps spot some local wildlife.

  • Or a spa treatment? We can also indulge in a spa treatment, soaking in the natural thermal waters.

  • Back to Quito: As the day winds down, we continue our journey back to Quito.

Discovering Quito

Our final day in Ecuador, and two options to choose from:

  • City and souvenirs? We explore Quito and its attractions in the morning, then spend the afternoon shopping for traditional souvenirs.

  • Or an excursion? Alternatively, we can go on the excursion outside the city that we skipped on the second day.

Whatever we choose, we all meet for dinner in the evening to relive the unforgettable moments of this adventure and raise a toast to the end of our journey.
