Itinerary

Athens, Meteora and the Peloponnese: three unique gems in a land steeped in myth and legend, where the past merges with the present. In Athens, the cradle of democracy, we walk the ancient streets of history up to the majestic Acropolis and immerse ourselves in modern art in its vibrant museums.

Up north, the rock formations of Meteora defy gravity, framing centuries-old monasteries in a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Heading down to the Peloponnese peninsula we stop at Delphi, home to the sanctuary of Apollo and the famous Oracle of Delphi, where, according to mythology, the gods answered through the priestess known as the Pythia. Then it's seaside time: a couple of days of relaxation and swimming in the town of Tolo, before returning to Athens with a photo stop at the Corinth Canal.

Check in: ouzo and pita gyros in Athens

Round trip flights are not included in the package, so you can choose from where and when you want to fly. This is to give you maximum freedom of choice!

Check in at the hotel in Athens and meet the rest of your group!

  • A first ouzo: We can't resist tasting ouzo, the undisputed star of Greek aperitifs, perhaps with olives and feta, to kick off our road trip across the Peloponnese peninsula.

  • Pita gyros for dinner: For dinner, pita gyros: our favorite dish throughout the trip.

  • First night out: Then we pick a spot in the city center to start the evening (and our adventures) the right way.

An ancient Greek temple with large columns stands on a rocky hill under a blue sky with white clouds at sunset.

The Acropolis and Koukaki

Athens, the majestic capital of Greece, blends a glorious past with contemporary vitality. At its heart stands a timeless symbol: the Acropolis.

  • Towards the Acropolis: We walk through lively streets, between the aroma of delicious food and street artists, until the sacred hill of the Acropolis appears against the blue sky.

  • With a local guide: A local guide takes us to uncover all the secrets of this timeless place.

  • Koukaki in the afternoon: We venture into the alleys of the Koukaki neighbourhood, right at the foot of the Acropolis, where residents, tourists and students mingle in cozy spots with the charm of the Athenian past.

A village with red-tiled roofs is nestled among green trees at the base of towering rock formations under a blue sky.

Thermopylae, Trikala and Kalambaka

Today we bid farewell to Athens, at least for now, and set off towards a true wonder: Meteora! Like all beautiful experiences, it has to be earned with a scenic journey.

  • A stop at Thermopylae: We leave early in the morning and stretch our legs near Thermopylae, a site rich in history.

  • Lunch in Trikala: Next stop: Trikala, where a delightful lunch awaits.

  • Sunset in Kalambaka: In the early afternoon we reach Kalambaka for a cold beer and a stunning sunset over the rock formations of Meteora. Don't forget your camera!

A stone monastery with a red-tiled roof sits atop a tall, sheer rock pillar, overlooking a vast, green, mountainous valley.

The monasteries of Meteora and the sanctuary of Delphi

Good morning, WeRoaders! The time has come to visit the monasteries of Meteora: that's exactly why we traveled all this way. Meteora is a significant center of the Orthodox Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988: 24 monasteries were built on its slopes, but only 6 are open to visitors today.

  • A monastery with our guide: With a local guide we explore a Meteora Monastery (depending on the day's opening times).

  • On to Delphi: Then we set off towards Delphi, perched on a hill at the foot of Mount Parnassus, not far from the Gulf of Corinth.

  • The sanctuary of Apollo: The site is dominated by the sanctuary of Apollo, one of the most important of classical Greece alongside Delos and Olympia. In the Mycenaean age it was dedicated to the goddess Gaia (Earth); according to a story by Homer, Apollo took possession of it in the form of a dolphin, hence the name Delphi and the cult of Delphic Apollo in the last millennium BC.

Politics, wars, the life of classical Greece: many significant decisions were guided by the oracle, interpreted by the priests. Will we consult it too?

A day of sun and sea in Tolo

Another day, another adventure: today we finally don our swimsuits!

  • Swim stop in Lepanto: On our way to Tolo, we take a break in Lepanto for a few hours of sun, swimming and well-deserved rest.

  • On to Tolo: Around lunchtime, with salt still in our hair, we continue to Tolo, arriving around two in the afternoon.

  • Beach afternoon: The rest of the afternoon is all beach, gentle waves and sea breeze: after all, Greece is all about the sea!

White boats float on turquoise water in front of a small, rocky island covered in greenery under a cloudy sky.

A day of leisure and culinary delights

Today we paddle… or not?! The day is entirely at our disposal, and pure relaxation is guaranteed.

  • Beach day? Beach, swims and snacks.

  • Or a kayak trip? A kayak trip around the island of Hydra and its crystal-clear waters.

  • A Greek feast: The sea makes you hungry! On the table: moussaka, souvlaki, tzatziki, Greek salad and freshly caught octopus. We want it all!

A long, narrow canal with turquoise water flows between steep, layered rock cliffs on a sunny day.

The Corinth Canal and a final dinner

On our last day in beautiful Greece, we retrace our steps towards Athens.

  • The Corinth Canal: Along the way we stop to admire a true marvel of art and engineering: the Corinth Canal. Work began in 1881 and was completed in 1893, with a big influence on shipping routes and the economic development of Greece.

  • Free afternoon in Athens: We drop our bags at the hotel and the afternoon is ours: local museums for art and culture lovers, or culinary delights and local delicacies to take home.

  • Final dinner: In the evening we all come together for our final dinner and celebrate the end of the week in style!
