Itinerary
This itinerary has 2 versions
A summer and a winter one. If you are looking for the departure dates forIceland: Northern Lights Hunting, Black Sand Beaches & Jökulsárlón, click here!
Iceland at 360 degrees in nine days, in a drive-yourself tour: a full loop out of Reykjavik and back. First the Golden Circle geysers and Gullfoss, then Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, the black sand of Reynisfjara and the icebergs of Jökulsárlón.
North through the Eastern Fjords to Dettifoss and Ásbyrgi Canyon, whale watching in Husavik, Lake Myvatn and Godafoss, then the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and Kirkjufell, and a free day in the capital. The landscape changes daily, from pastures to lava. Downtime? Hot springs and the Forest Lagoon. Culture is mostly Reykjavik, at the end.

Welcome to Iceland: check-in in Reykjavik
Check-in: our adventure starts in Reykjavik
Roundtrip flights or transportation to reach the destination are not included in the package, so you can decide from where and when you want to leave! This gives you complete freedom of choice to adjust your travel itinerary to your needs.
The trip starts in Reykjavik, and today is only about dropping bags and meeting the people we will be driving with.
Check-in and first meeting: we check into the hotel in Reykjavik and meet our group leader: names in a chat finally turn into actual faces!
First Icelandic dinner: dinner is all together, a first go at the local cuisine. Fish and beer have a reputation here, so we test the claim straight away.

Golden Circle: Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss
The Golden Circle
The real adventure starts here, and from today the landscape changes on us every single day.
Geysers on the Golden Circle: on the Golden Circle we meet the phenomenon Iceland is famous for. In Icelandic, geyser means to issue in streams, and that is exactly it: boiling water shot metres up!
The most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland
Waterfall time: ready to get a little wet?
First waterfall, Gullfoss: next comes Gullfoss, an immense waterfall and the first of many here.
Behind Seljalandsfoss: then Seljalandsfoss, which hides a magical cave behind the water. Waterproof clothes, definitely.
On to Skogafoss: then Skogafoss, the second waterfall of the day and our favourite.
Brave enough for a hot spring? After dinner, whoever is brave enough goes out looking for a natural hot spring.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach and Jökulsárlón
Dyrholaey and the black sand beach
South coast today, and the day ends among floating icebergs. Not something most days can offer us!
Dyrholaey viewpoint: we reach the Dyrholaey viewpoint, a rocky plateau with a huge stone arch.
Black sand at Reynisfjara: then we descend to the black sand beach of Reynisfjara, like walking on the moon.
On the road
The afternoon is road, because in Iceland the road itself is the point.
Pastures and volcano views: green pastures and greenhouses, then the Hekla Volcano appearing on the horizon.
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
At Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, Europe's largest glacier reaches the beach, and dozens of icebergs float here until the waves take them out to sea.
Up for an amphibian boat tour? If conditions are optimal, an amphibian boat tour gets us near the icebergs.

Eastern Fjords: Seydisfjordur and Egilsstaðir
Eastern Fjords and Seydisfjordur
North now, and again the landscape changes completely within just a few kilometres of driving!
Into the fjords: we reach the Eastern Fjords, whose beaches fill with puffins in summertime.
Bike or kayak? We park in Seydisfjordur, a tiny village, then choose: mountain bike tour or kayaking.
Egilsstaðir and hot spring pools
The afternoon is Egilsstaðir, the only proper town in Eastern Iceland with its 2.000 inhabitants.
Fancy a natural hot spring? We have free time to go looking for natural hot spring pools.

Dettifoss and Ásbyrgi Canyon
Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall
Two set pieces today, one loud and one green, both within fairly easy reach of the car.
Dettifoss up close: Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, with 1.5 million litres a second in summertime, a 44-metre drop and spray visible a kilometre away. And we can get close!
Trekking the refuge of the gods
Ásbyrgi means refuge of the gods, and its walls rise up to 100 metres, fully covered with vegetation.
Trekking the canyon: in the afternoon we trek the gorge of Ásbyrgi Canyon, spotting fulmar seagulls if we are lucky.

Husavik whales, Lake Myvatn and Godafoss
Husavik whale watching
Whales first thing this morning, then a landscape that looks like something went very badly wrong here at some point.
Whale watching in Husavik? Husavik is considered the whale watching world capital: sightings are frequent enough for the title, though nature guarantees nothing. Fingers crossed while we are out there!
Lake Myvatn
An hour's drive and we are somewhere post-nuclear.
Lake Myvatn: pools of steaming water, bubbling mud and sulfurous soil.
Fancy a hike? We can hike round the lake if we want.
Godafoss and the Forest Lagoon
Godafoss, the waterfall of the gods, is the last big waterfall here: horseshoe-shaped rather than powerful.
Recharging at the Forest Lagoon: then the thermal pools of the Forest Lagoon help us recharge.

On the way to Snæfellsnes and Kirkjufell
Peat houses and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula
An intense road day today, because we have a lot of island to cross before we stop for the night.
Stops along the way: there is so much to see along the road, like the historic peat houses, Icelandic buildings straight out of a Disney fairy tale.
Afternoon on the peninsula: we reach the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in the afternoon, with time to enjoy it.
Photos at Kirkjufell: it is probably the most photographed place in Iceland, thanks to Kirkjufell, from Game of Thrones. Cameras out!

Last evening in Reykjavik
Free day in the capital
Back in the capital city at last, and for once there is nothing on the schedule for the whole day!
Free time in Reykjavik: we are back in Reykjavik, with free time to spend however each one of us wants.
Markets or museums? Shopping is one option: Reykjavik has many second-hand markets, Kolaportid the most famous of them. Museums are the other, or both if we are efficient.

Goodbye Iceland
Check-out and departures
Last morning of the trip: check-out done, and nine days of driving right round Iceland come to an end.
Heading home: time to go back home, although after a full lap of the island nobody is in much of a hurry to reach the airport.
Until next time: see you again on your next WeRoad adventure, wherever in the world the group ends up next!
