Itinerary
Iceland in five days, driving ourselves, with Reykjavik as our base. We open in the capital with a Welcome Meeting and a first taste of local fish and beer. Then the Golden Circle: Thingvellir National Park, where the European and American plates pull apart, Geysir and Strokkur erupting every 4 to 8 minutes, and the 31-metre Gullfoss.
A second driving day follows the south coast: Seljalandsfoss with its cave behind the water, the 62-metre Skógafoss, lunch in Vik, the Dyrholaey viewpoint and the black sand of Reynisfjara. Then the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, with the Snæfellsjökull glacier and the Eldborg crater, and downtime in the hot springs of Hvammsvik above the Atlantic. We also reach the geothermal Reykjanes peninsula with the Fagradalsfjall volcano. Nature, roads and hot water do the work here, not sightseeing.

Welcome to Iceland: check-in in Reykjavik
Our adventure starts in Reykjavik
Roundtrip flights or transportation to reach the destination are not included in the package, so you can decide from where and when you want to leave! This gives you complete freedom of choice to adjust your travel itinerary to your needs.
The trip starts in Reykjavik, where we meet the people we'll spend five days driving around Iceland with.
Check-in and Welcome Meeting: hotel check-in, then the Welcome Meeting with our Group Leader: the group stops being a chat thread and turns into faces around a table.
Fish and beer: dinner together, our first go at the local cuisine. Reykjavik has a reputation for fish and beer, and we are in no position to leave that untested!

Golden Circle: Thingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss
Between Europe and North America
First full day behind the wheel: we leave the capital early and head inland to the Golden Circle, the region that holds Iceland's best-known natural wonders.
Into Thingvellir National Park: the landscape opens out, ice and fire side by side, and we walk into the rift where the European and American plates are pulling apart.
Between two continents: the split is wide enough to pick a side. Some of us stay in Europe, the rest step across to North America in a single stride!
Geysir and Strokkur
After a packed lunch, on to the geysers.
Waiting for Strokkur: Geysir is the oldest known geyser and the one that named the phenomenon, but it is dormant now, so we wait on neighbouring Strokkur, which fires every 4 to 8 minutes.
Gullfoss to finish: last stop of the day, and a loud one: Gullfoss drops 31 metres, with a volume of water you feel in your chest.
Local legend has the farmer Gygur's treasure still buried somewhere underneath.

Iceland's south coast: waterfalls and Reynisfjara
The most beautiful waterfalls in Iceland
We leave Reykjavik behind for the day and drive along the south coast of Iceland, where the waterfalls come one after another.
Behind Seljalandsfoss: Seljalandsfoss comes first, with a cave behind the curtain of water, so we can stand on the far side and look out. Waterproofs on: coming out dry is not one of the options!
On to Skógafoss: next, through a landscape straight out of "Lord of the Rings", Skógafoss drops 62 metres. Legend says anyone who takes a dip in it finds something they lost long ago, which is reason enough to try.
Vik and the Dyrholaey viewpoint
Lunch stop in the village of Vik, then up we go.
Dyrholaey viewpoint: the viewpoint sits on a rocky plateau, where a massive stone arch rises out of the sea just off the coastline.
Black sand at Reynisfjara: back down at the shore, where the beaches turn black, we walk the sand of Reynisfjara, barefoot for anyone brave enough.
Nothing to hear but the strong wind and the waves hitting the shore, and the dark of the beach swallowing everyone on it.

Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the Hvammsvik hot springs
Journey to the Center of the Earth
Different direction today: we head for the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, then work our way back towards Reykjavik.
Snæfellsjökull glacier: Jules Verne made this the entrance to the center of the Earth in his novel Journey to the Center of the Earth, and the Snæfellsjökull glacier here has been collecting mystical tales for centuries.
Trekking the Eldborg crater
Geologically the peninsula packs in features from every part of Iceland: like seeing a bit of the whole island!
Up for a crater trek? There is also Eldborg, a volcanic crater we can trek.
A long soak at Hvammsvik: in the afternoon we stop at the hot springs of Hvammsvik, still relatively unknown, set in a lunar landscape over the Atlantic Ocean and ringed by spectacular mountains. The ocean is close enough that the tides move the temperature and the water level in the pools, and the geothermal water is salty too.
Evening in Reykjavik: we stay in a long while, then drive into Reykjavik for an evening together.

Goodbye Iceland: check-out in Reykjavik
Check-out and goodbyes
Last morning in Reykjavik. Bags are packed and the group that spent five days sharing a car, a hostel and a lot of road starts heading home.
Check-out and goodbyes: we check out of the hotel and say goodbye properly, which after five days of waterfalls, geysers, black sand and long drives takes longer than any of us plans for.
Until next time: then it is time to go back home, and to see you again on your next WeRoad adventure, wherever in the world it takes us!
