Itinerary

A trip to Indonesia, in Collection format, to discover Bali and Lombok, perhaps the two most famous islands of the entire archipelago. First Bali, where slow rhythms and calm vibes invite a journey within ourselves, then wild Lombok: a less famous, less touristy little Bali that is still authentic and fascinating.

We start in Seminyak and nearby Kuta, then cross tidy rice fields and temples to reach the exclusive island of Menjangan. In spiritual Ubud we explore the Monkey Forest, find peace at the Tirta Empul temple, where we can participate in a traditional rite of purification, and test ourselves in a cooking class. We pass through Sideman, the most authentic area of Bali, and come full circle on Lombok with a stop at the Gili Islands, where the only means of transport are bicycles, donkeys, horses and, of course, boats! A full immersion in Indonesian culture, food and traditions. Ready to go?

Check-in in Seminyak and first sunset

Round trip flights are not included in the package, so you can choose from where and when you want to fly. This is to give you maximum freedom of choice!

We take the afternoon in Seminyak to settle in and recover from jet lag.

  • First sunset on the beach: we meet on the beach for our first Indonesian sunset, a great start to our trip!

  • Dinner with typical dishes: then we go looking for the most characteristic restaurant we can find to taste some typical dishes. To begin, no doubt about it: coconut rice for everyone!

A long swimming pool at a tropical resort, flanked by rows of white lounge chairs and umbrellas under a partly cloudy sky.

Beach, surf and arak cocktails

The best way to beat jet lag? A day of rest in Seminyak, with a good dose of relaxation and free time. We can choose how to spend it:

  • Beach, shopping or massage? We can enjoy the long beach dotted with beach bars, wander the shopping streets for local souvenirs or try a Balinese massage.

  • Fancy surfing? Nearby is Kuta, a small paradise for surfers, where we could throw ourselves into the waves: the sea is gentle, even if it's our first time on a surfboard. A few slips are guaranteed, and so are the laughs!

  • Sunset cocktail: at sunset we sit on one of the many poufs overlooking the sea and sip a nice cocktail.

  • Arak cocktails and dancing: in the evening we find a bar to try Balinese arak-based cocktails, then a few dance steps.

Tanah Lot and Belimbing rice fields

Good morning, Bali! We load our backpacks on the minivan and head north to the island of Menjangan, with time to visit a few unmissable places on the way.

  • The sea temple of Tanah Lot: we start with Tanah Lot, a Hindu temple on an islet 100 meters off the south-east coast of Bali, built by a priest in the 16th century and dedicated to the guardian spirits of the sea, said to be guarded by dangerous sea serpents.

  • Belimbing rice fields: next, the Belimbing rice fields, an authentic spectacle of nature.

  • Lunch and on to the hotel: a stop for something to eat, then on to our hotel for the night.

At high tide the rock of Pura Tanah Lot is almost completely submerged, but for a few hours a day it is possible to walk to the temple almost without getting wet.

Time to explore and relax

Time to explore underwater Indonesia: Menjangan, an authentic paradise on earth, is known above all for its seabed. "Menjangan" comes from the Javanese language and means deer.

  • Snorkeling and boat trips: a day of snorkeling and boat excursions among a multitude of colorful fish.

  • Spotting the deer: wild deer live on the island and sometimes peep out on the beach, and we will also be able to spot them.

  • Sunset on the beach: with a little patience, we wait for the sunset (and the deer) on the beach. Is there a better way to end the day?

Ubud, Bali's culinary capital

We leave Menjangan for Ubud, a picturesque town on the gentle slopes rising toward Bali's central mountains. Surrounded by tropical vegetation and rice terraces, it's where Bali's millenary culture developed, and it's still one of the island's main centers of historical and artistic interest.

  • Straight there or with a stop? On the way we can agree on a couple of "journey break" stops, such as local markets or the famous Jatiluwih rice fields. The choice is ours!

  • Dinner in the culinary capital: in the evening Ubud shows its side as the culinary capital of Bali, and a special prize goes to whoever finds the best traditional Balinese restaurant (group leader excluded!).

Weaving, rice fields and cooking class

Mystical, special, unique: that's Sideman, a small Balinese town surrounded by rice fields and lush vegetation, with a peace unlike the rest of the island. Here's our day:

  • Traditional weaving: we visit a local house to see the techniques and process of traditional weaving.

  • Walk among the rice fields: among rice fields and exotic plantations, discovering the exclusive Subak irrigation system.

  • Cooking class and Jamu: a short course of traditional cuisine, with lunch included, and a taste of Jamu, a traditional herbal drink.

  • Yoga back in Ubud? We return to Ubud in the afternoon: maybe a yoga lesson, what do you think?

Temples, palaces and Campuhan Ridge

Today we explore Ubud and its many temples scattered everywhere. There's plenty to choose from:

  • Temples and palaces: we can start from Pura Taman Saraswati and then continue to the Puri Saren Palace.

  • Garden, ridge or temple? We can go to the Botanical Garden or walk along the Campuhan Ridge, just outside Ubud, to a panoramic point where we can admire the valley. Alternatively, we can reach the Tirta Empul temple, just outside Ubud, and take part in a purification ritual.

  • Into the Monkey Forest: a sacred place where monkeys are the real masters. Careful: they're little thieves and will grab glasses and hats, to be won back with food!

  • Evening at the market: towards evening, a walk through the market, where we can find local craft products. Time to think about souvenirs?

A resort swimming pool overlooks a sandy beach with lounge chairs and red umbrellas as the sun sets over the ocean and hills.

Let's reach a new island!

Today we leave for Lombok, an island east of Bali and a surfer's paradise.

  • By ferry to Mandalika Beach: we take a ferry and head straight to our accommodation in Mandalika Beach to drop our backpacks.

  • Free afternoon: time to explore the surroundings, and we can already take a first dip in the crystal clear waters.

  • Fish dinner: a fish-based dinner and a good night's sleep to recharge our batteries.

Snorkeling at Gili Nanggu, Kedis and Tangkong

Everyone knows the Gili Islands near Bali (the well-known Trawangan, Air and Meno), but few can say they have been to the Gili of Lombok: virgin islands south-west of Lombok, much less frequented.

  • By launch to the Gilis: by minivan to the Sekotong area, then by fast launch to Gili Nanggu, Gili Kedis and Gili Tangkong.

  • Snorkeling in calm waters: far from the rest of the world, with mask and snorkel included!

  • Lunch on an island: a delicious local lunch on one of the islands and more underwater life before heading back to the hotel.

Discovering Lombok

Good morning, WeRoaders! It's already our tenth day of travel, and today is completely at our disposal. We can choose:

  • Hotel or beach? We can relax at the hotel or bask on one of the many nearby beaches.

  • A Sasak village? Or we can discover the culture and traditions of Lombok in a traditional Sasak village, renowned for handmade terracotta and ceramics.

  • Heading south to the beaches? We can then continue south to the beautiful Mawun beach, stop for lunch in a traditional restaurant and head towards the long Tanjung Aan beach, ideal for a dip and for watching surfers challenge the waves. Not bad, huh?

Canggu and a last Balinese night

Today we return to the starting point: a transfer, a ferry and another transfer.

  • Arrival in Canggu: we arrive in Canggu in the afternoon and get ready for the evening.

  • Last dinner and Balinese nightlife: a last dinner together to toast our adventure, then off into the Balinese nightlife to enjoy the last hours in pure WeRoad style!

Check out and goodbye

Bye bye Bali, it's time to say goodbye to you, and to each other. We'll see you very soon on the streets of the world!
