Itinerary
Namibia is a country where Mother Nature still writes the rules, and in ten days we cross it end to end. From Windhoek we head north to the Cheetah Conservation Fund and into Etosha National Park, where lions, zebras, elephants and giraffes roam the savannah. Through Damaraland we drop to the Atlantic coast, stopping at the seals of Cape Cross and at Swakopmund and its German-style breweries, then turn south into the Namibian desert: Sossusvlei, Deadvlei and red sand dunes among the highest in the world. Game drives, long road days, a free day by the ocean, then back to Windhoek.

Welcome to Windhoek, the capital of Namibia
Zebra, kudu or crocodile for dinner
Round trip flights are not included in the package, so you can choose from where and when you want to fly. This is to give you maximum freedom of choice!
We land in the vibrant capital of Namibia and the journey begins here: check-in, welcome meeting, and the group finally all in one room!
Check-in and welcome: we check in at our accommodation in Windhoek, then the welcome meeting, where names, faces and plans for the next ten days come together.
Dinner to break the ice: then dinner out, the perfect way to get to know each other better. What's on the menu? Zebra, kudu or crocodile.

North to Otjiwarongo and the Cheetah Conservation Fund
Big cats at Okonjima Reserve
First day inside African nature. We leave the capital and point north, where the laws of Mother Nature still rule, untouched by human hands.
North from Windhoek: a long drive out of Windhoek: about two and a half hours of vast, unspoiled landscapes before Okonjima Nature Reserve appears.
At the Cheetah Conservation Fund: inside it, the Cheetah Conservation Fund has protected big cats, cheetahs included, since 1990. We spend hours learning how the predators of the savannah live and how the foundation rehabilitates injured or traumatized animals so they survive once released back into the wild.
Up for a safari? An optional safari is there for anyone eager to spot one in its habitat.
Night in Otjiwarongo: as evening falls we leave the reserve: Otjiwarongo is where we stop for the night.

Into Etosha National Park, the great white place
Two days among lions and zebras
Hearty breakfast, then kilometers of African landscape past the windows. Today we reach the most famous park in Namibia, and we have two full days inside it.
The great white place: Etosha National Park means "great white place" in the local language, and we soon see why: much of it is blinding white salt desert.
Two days of wildlife spotting: we try to spot as many animal species as possible: elephants, zebras, giraffes, kudus, lions, hyenas, leopards and cheetahs.
Eyes on the sky: vultures, snake eagles and many other bird species overhead.
On the Etosha Pan: at the heart of the park lies the Etosha Pan, the salt pan behind the name: 12 million years ago a river fed a lake here, then changed course and left desert.

Wild Damaraland and the rock art of Twyfelfontein
Fossilized giants in the Petrified Forest
A completely new side of the country opens up today: Damaraland is vast, wild and ruggedly beautiful.
Desert wildlife: this is prime ground for desert-adapted megafauna, so we keep our eyes open for elephants and rhinos as the scenery turns rocky.
Rock art at Twyfelfontein: Twyfelfontein, a rock site in the Kunene region, holds around 2,000 petroglyphs and is Namibia's only UNESCO World Heritage site.
Into the Petrified Forest: the Petrified Forest closes the day: an eerie landscape of gigantic fossilized trees, millions of years old, some up to 30 meters tall.

Skeleton Coast, Cape Cross seals and Swakopmund
German colonial streets, cold beer
Hello Africa! Early start, plenty of energy and a lot of kilometers ahead, with stops to stretch our legs and breathe in some fresh air.
Along the Skeleton Coast: we drive the last stretch of the famous Skeleton Coast to Cape Cross, a promontory on the Atlantic coast.
The seals of Cape Cross: its protected area shelters tens of thousands of seals. Friendly they are definitely not, so we enjoy the sight from a safe distance.
Strolling Swakopmund: in the afternoon we reach Swakopmund, drop the backpacks at the hotel and stroll the city center, founded by the Germans in 1892 and full of German colonial architecture.
Evening in town: typical dishes for dinner, then the German-style breweries: maybe a nice cold beer to end the day.

Free day in Swakopmund, between Namib and Atlantic
Quad biking, boat rides or beach
A whole day to ourselves in this coastal town, wedged between the vast Namib Desert and the South Atlantic Ocean, about 225 miles west of Windhoek. Swakopmund has enough outdoor adventure to fill several days, not just one: our call!
Boat or quad? A relaxing boat ride, or an exciting quad excursion among the sand dunes.
Prefer to do nothing? A day of total relaxation on the beach works too.
Food lovers? A gastronomic tour of the best restaurants, with local beers to taste.

South into Namib-Naukluft National Park
Why the oldest dunes turn red
We wake up early and point the compass south, straight into the Namibian desert for the last act.
Noses to the windows: the drive takes about five hours and the morning flies by as we watch what Mother Nature has crafted here.
Into Namib-Naukluft: in the early afternoon we enter Namib-Naukluft National Park, surrounded by the towering sand dunes we had only imagined or seen from afar.
Exploring the dunes: some of the highest dunes in the world stand right here, almost 400 meters tall. We don't waste a minute and set off to explore.
Their colors run from pink to orange to red, born of the ferrous composition of the sand and its oxidation: the oldest dunes are the deepest red.

Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, where the dunes glow
Dead acacias and a Martian crust
Back into the park that enchanted us yesterday: two of its most spectacular corners are still on the list. Cameras ready, here it's impossible to take a bad photo!
Sossusvlei first: Sossusvlei is a lake that is mostly dry, covered with a crust of salt sand: it really feels like Mars.
Then Deadvlei: Deadvlei is a depression of white sand ringed by towering red sand dunes, the most photographed spot in all of Namibia.
Among the dead acacias: the dead acacia trees are the real stars, dark brown and black silhouettes against the color. An oasis of acacias grew here once, until the river feeding it changed course.

Back to Windhoek: Christuskirche and the Craft Center
Botanical gardens and a last dinner
After two days in the surreal landscapes of the Namibian desert it's time to return to reality, and to where it all began.
Back to Windhoek: the drive back to Windhoek takes about five and a half hours, African landscapes past the windows one last time. We reach the hotel around lunchtime and grab a bite.
A walk in the center? The afternoon is free for the city center: Christuskirche, a church standing oddly in the middle of the streets, is the first point of interest.
Crafts or gardens? Then the Namibia Craft Center for local craftsmanship and souvenirs, and the botanical gardens for a last touch of nature.
Last dinner together: in the evening we gather for dinner one final time, reliving the best moments of the adventure.
