Itinerary

Eight days of beach life in North Sardinia, based mostly at Porto Pollo, from Olbia out to the Costa Smeralda. Rental cars take us between Del Principe beach and Rena Majore, both for snorkelling, and whole days go to surfing, windsurfing, sailing, SUP and kayaking inland at Valledoria.

We also reach the Maddalena Archipelago and its 60 islands, then Caprera for Garibaldi's home-museum and Cala Coticcio, the cove renamed Tahiti. The last beach day is Liscia Ruja at Porto Cervo. Culture is one museum; the rest is sea, sport, sunsets, chiringuitos and nights on the sand.

Rental cars and a first toast

Round trip flights are not included in the package, so you can choose from where and when you want to fly. This is to give you maximum freedom of choice!

Flights are your own choice, so the trip really starts when the group meets and the rental cars are ours.

  • Meeting in Olbia: we gather in Olbia, pick up the cars, settle in, then head out to explore the area around us.

  • Seafood dinner: fresh from the day's catch.

  • First toast on the beach: then down to the beach, where there are always parties and live music. Cheers!

Caribbean vibes

First full beach day, and it sets the tone: white sand, clear water, nowhere else to be.

  • Swimming at Del Principe Beach: one of the most beautiful on the Costa Smeralda, a thin strip of fine white sand over a bay of crystal-clear water with a Caribbean vibe. Who's first in?

Deep in the blue sea

Time to look below the surface: the marine wildlife under those waves is the point.

  • Snorkelling: mask on and into the water.

  • Evening in Porto Pollo: then we get back to Porto Pollo for dinner, nightlife on the beach and a moonlight tan.

Get on the board!

More sport today, then a move along the coast to a beach the hippies named after the moon.

  • Surf, windsurf or SUP: we try surfing, windsurfing or SUP first. One day won't make anyone a pro, but the point is being on the board!

Moon Valley by moonlight

Then Rena Majore, not far from Porto Pollo.

  • Lunch and snorkelling: a kiosk lunch, then snorkelling with mask and fins.

  • Sunset with a cold beer: and the option of staying on for the moonlight in the place the hippie communities called Moon Valley, Valle della Luna.

A person in swim shorts stands on a small rock in a cove with clear turquoise water, surrounded by rocky cliffs.

Let's get wet!

Not a sleeping-on-the-sand day: the morning stays at base, the afternoon goes out to the islands.

  • Choosing our water sport: in Porto Pollo we pick between surf, windsurf, sail or SUP. The only challenge? Staying upright.

Small Paradise

In the afternoon we reach La Maddalena, 60 small islands with their own flora and fauna.

  • Eyes on the water: the local bottlenose dolphins turn up when they feel like it!

People swim in turquoise water and sunbathe on a white sand beach cove surrounded by rocky green hills under a bright blue sky.

A little bit of culture...

One visit to La Maddalena wasn't enough, so we go back for a single island and give it the whole day: Caprera, all postcard landscapes.

  • Garibaldi's home-museum: we start at Garibaldi's home-museum, where he first landed in 1855.

  • Packed lunch: then we eat our packed lunch and head for the coast!

...and a little bit of Tahiti!

The afternoon belongs to Cala Coticcio, renamed Tahiti for good reason.

  • Walking to the beach: it takes a walk to reach the most exotic beach on the island, with fine white sand and deep clear water. Worth it? Absolutely.

Kayak time

No beach today. We go inland instead, and the whole day belongs to the kayaks.

  • Off to Valledoria: early rise and a solid breakfast, then Valledoria.

  • Kayaking: we decide the plan together, but the rowing is the point: the resting can wait for tomorrow!

Beach Chiringuitos

The route shows a Sardinia we haven't seen, with coloured flora and ochre-coloured rocks.

  • Beach walk and chiringuito: back at Porto Pollo by dinner, still up for a beach walk and a chiringuito? Of course.

Surf or bed time?

Last full day, and it splits: a lazy morning or one more go at the waves, then the biggest beach around.

  • Need a lie-in? Whoever needs the bed can keep it all morning.

  • One more go at the waves? Whoever wants the board can try surfing again at Porto Pollo.

Last beach, last toast

Then Porto Cervo and Liscia Ruja, the biggest beach on the Costa Smeralda.

  • Beach time at Liscia Ruja: swimming and doing very little, as planned.

  • Last dinner together: with a toast to the group. Cheers!

Check out and goodbye

Nothing left to catch but a flight, and the trip ends where the group does.

  • Check-out and a last coffee: then the usual swapping of photos and contacts.

Goodbye Sardinia, until the next WeRoad adventure!
