Itinerary

This Lofoten road trip runs for eight days in Norway, beyond the Arctic Circle at the 68th parallel, starting and ending in Tromsø. We drive south through tunnels and viaducts into the archipelago, sleep in the red Rorbuer fisherman's cabins and give ourselves three full days among fishing villages, beaches and jagged peaks reflected in the calm waters of the Gulf Stream. There is trekking on Reinebringen or Festvågtind, a stockfish museum in Å for the cod fishing that anchors local life, photo stops at Nusfjord, Sakrisoy, Hamnoy, Skagsanden and Storvatnet, and a dinghy trip from Svolvær to look for sea eagles. Kayaks, paddleboards and nature trails fill the northern fjords, with long stretches of road and no other car in sight.

Boats are docked in a calm harbor, with traditional and modern buildings along the waterfront reflecting in the water.

Arrival and first evening

Round trip flights are not included, so we each pick where and when to fly. After check-in there is a welcome meeting, our first chance to meet the people we will share cars with.

Arrival day in the far north of Europe, where the light and the silence already feel different from anywhere further south!

  • First evening in Tromsø: the evening is ours to explore Tromsø and the landscapes around it, an easy way into Norway before the road trip properly starts.

A person on a WeRoad trip stands on a rocky shore with arms raised, facing a turbulent river with white water rapids.

Rental cars and Målselvfossen waterfall

We pick up the rental cars and point south. The road to the archipelago runs through tunnels and viaducts, and is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.

  • Målselvfossen waterfalls: first real stop is the Målselvfossen waterfalls, a chance to stretch our legs and take in the scenery, though we can pull over wherever else looks worth it.

  • Into Polar Park: Polar Park, the northernmost park in the world, sits in the boreal taiga and holds Norway's top predators, wolves, bears, lynxes and foxes, alongside reindeer, deer, moose and musk ox.

Soup and an evening in town

From there we drive on to Harstad for the night. The point of this trip is the road itself, and hours of it are what let these landscapes sink in.

  • Soup in town: we spend the evening in town, ideally somewhere small serving soup, which is one of the best things you can eat around here.

A seaside village with red houses on stilts sits on a calm bay at the foot of towering mountains under a blue sky.

Stockfish and photo stops

The driving continues south into the archipelago, and from here we have three full days. What can we not miss? We decide together.

  • Å and its stockfish museum? One option is Å, one of the shortest place names in the world, and its stockfish museum, where the cod fishing traditional to this region starts to make sense.

  • Photo stops over the islands? If landscapes matter more, Nusfjord, Sakrisoy, Hamnoy, Skagsanden and Storvatnet are the spots the photographers among us will want, all of them views over the islands.

A WeRoad group trip of three women with their backs to the camera sit on a clifftop, overlooking a coastal town, mountains, and a fjord.

Trekking time

Today the cars stay put and we head uphill instead. How hard do we want to push? The group decides.

  • Up for a big hike? Reinebringen and Festvågtind are the popular hikes. Both are demanding and take a long time to reach the panoramic points, and the scenery up there is why people do it.

  • Something gentler? If trekking is not the mood, there are alternatives: more fishing villages to wander, or simply sitting with the views. We pick between them together.

Along the E30

A scenic drive along the E30 road takes us to the archipelago's largest town, and after days of empty road it feels busy!

  • Arriving in Svolvær: Svolvær has a population of 5,000 and a coastline lined with boats of every colour and size, which is the first thing we notice on arrival.

  • An evening for foodies: restaurants serving local cuisine, craft breweries and distilleries: the evening in this lively town mostly sorts itself out.

Colorful red and yellow houses on stilts line a calm harbor with large, snow-covered mountains in the background under a blue sky.

In search of eagles!

We leave the archipelago today, but not before getting out on the water from Svolvær with our eyes on the sky.

  • Looking for sea eagles: the dinghy takes us through the fjords looking for sea eagles, and with luck a few other marine animals: noses in the air, eyesight sharpened!

  • Lofoten from the sea: seen from the sea the Lofoten islands read differently, and the landscapes alone would justify going out even without a single bird.

Kayaks and trails up north

Then we say goodbye to Lofoten and drive to the northern fjords. It is a long stretch, kept company by the scenery and by summer days that never really end. Here it is wild and rugged: rocky coastlines with fishing villages and big beaches.

  • Kayak, paddleboard or trails? We can rent kayaks or stand-up paddleboards, or take the nature trails and hikes instead.

An aerial view of a snow-covered coastal city at dusk, with a long, illuminated bridge crossing the water towards snowy mountains.

Peninsula, old houses and the mountain

The last full day is deliberately slow: we explore the peninsula at our own pace before turning back towards the city. A stroll is enough here, with the natural beauty doing the work.

  • Back to Tromsø: later we drive to Tromsø, whose centre holds the largest concentration of old wooden houses around, the oldest dating to 1789.

  • Up the mountain? If the city does not hold us, the mountain above it does. Cable car up and a walk down suits most people, or we hike up in about two hours.

A WeRoad group trip takes a selfie on a rocky mountaintop, with a view of a coastal village and mountains across a bay.

Goodbyes and flights home

Last morning, and all that is left is the check-out and the goodbyes that follow eight days of shared driving.

  • Handing back the keys: we say farewell, eight days of fjords and fishing villages behind us and a group that met as strangers in Tromsø.

  • On our own schedule: flights home are on our own schedule, as they were on the way in, so the goodbyes stagger through the day.

See you on the next WeRoad adventure!

My week in the Lofoten Islands with WeRoad featured incredible landscapes, picturesque fjords, charming fishing villages, and hikes that perfectly balanced enjoyment and challenge, all shared with a wonderfully fun and easy-going group. Our coordinator, John, was outstanding, demonstrating exceptional organization, leadership, and calm management during unexpected situations. However, the 7-day itinerary felt overly rushed and would greatly benefit from being extended to nine days. Strict restaurant reservations created unnecessary daily deadlines that prevented us from relaxing and truly absorbing our surroundings, an issue easily solved by opting for flexible, casual meals. Furthermore, we spent far too much time driving, sometimes over four hours a day, which detracted from the core purpose of booking an adventure meant for hiking and exploring rather than sitting in a vehicle.

I hadn’t done a group tour in a few years so I was honestly a little nervous about what the group dynamics would be like. I really didn’t need to be though. From that first meal there were hugs, laughs and stories, my face hurt from laughing. It’s only been a day since I saw everyone and I’m already missing my Norway team. I even had a little cry on the way to the airport because I think that’s when it hit me how much I’d loved the trip and how quickly a group of strangers had become people I genuinely didn’t want to say goodbye to. The trip itself was such a brilliant mix of experiences. We had challenging hikes that left you feeling incredibly grateful and proud when you reached the top and even more relieved when you made it back down. We had kayaking, eagle watching, a cave hike, cable cars, beautiful mountains and lakes, scenic drives, remote bakeries and little fishing villages. The Northern Lights were obviously a huge highlight. We had midnight drives to chase the Aurora and somehow I got to see them twice on my birthday. I still can’t quite believe that happened and I feel incredibly lucky. There were so many other little moments that made the trip special too. The views from the mountains, lakes and cable cars, the scenery on the drives between places, random pit stops and being exhausted after a hike but then requesting another one in the afternoon. I’m also quite fussy about hotels and where I eat so I was really pleasantly surprised by how good both were throughout the trip. John raised the bar mega high! They were the kind of places you actually wanted to take photos of and being pescatarian was never an issue. I’m also still thinking about the raspberry cinnamon bun from that little remote bakery in Å because I’m pretty sure it was the best one I’ve ever had. But I think what made the trip was the people. I went into it nervous about joining a group of strangers and somehow came away with a little team of people I’m already missing. There were so many laughs, hugs, ridiculous moments and memories made along the way and I’m so glad I got to experience Norway with this group. Our group leader is special…he juggled a lot on this trip that was out of his control and he was relentless at making sure we had the best time…we appreciate you John! 🫰🏻 Already looking forward to my next WeRoad trip. ❤️

John was an awesome coordinator. What impressed me most was how he managed to find the perfect balance between letting us experience the wild and adventurous side of Norway while always making sure we felt safe and looked after. The trip definitely came with many challenges: cancelled flights because of the airport strike in Oslo, a participant who had to be hospitalized for a personal health issue, and the reality of bringing together people from so many different backgrounds and cultures. Through it all, John kept the group united, managed to keep everything on track and allowed us to have lot of fun. Looking back, I honestly can't imagine the trip going as smoothly without him. For me, this was an incredible experience, full of unforgettable moments, and I'm already looking forward to joining the WeRoad next adventure!
