Itinerary

A trip to Oman that's way more than a classic tour: a land of sea, desert and towering peaks, with ancient history and a mysterious, fascinating culture. The Sultanate of Oman is so much more than desert: there's the Grand Canyon of Arabia, hidden oases tucked between dunes and mountains, coastlines dropping into turquoise waters, fortresses, impregnable castles and charming rural villages.

We also discover Omani culture and its people, through grand mosques and vibrant markets full of local crafts, jewelry, essences and that iconic, fragrant incense. It's a country slowly opening up to the West, where hospitality is sacred: despite a slightly standoffish first impression, the Omani people are incredibly welcoming, with hearts of gold.

Travel route map outlining a circular itinerary that starts and ends in Muscat with several designated stops.

Check-in: our adventure starts in Muscat

Flights to and from the destination are not included in the package, so you can decide where to depart from, at what time, and with whichever airline you prefer. This is to give you the utmost freedom of choice.

Here’s how the meet-up works!

Day one in Muscat, one of the oldest cities in the Middle East: right from the start, it feels like an enchanted world!

  • Check-in and first steps: we check in at the hotel and take our first steps in Oman.

  • First sunset: we enjoy the sunset, perhaps near the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, whose white marble contrasts beautifully with the pink sky.

  • First dinner together: our first dinner in Oman and the official kick-off of our adventure!

A woman stands by an infinity pool on a wooden deck, looking out over a mountainous valley at sunset.

On the road from Rustaq to the mountain tracks

New day, new horizons! We pick up our rental cars and already bid farewell to the capital.

  • The fort of Rustaq: first stop is Rustaq, a town in northern Oman, where we explore the fort and its breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

  • Off-road in the Hajar Mountains: after lunch, the real highlight: 60 km of off-road driving through the Hajar Mountains, with plenty of chances to stop and admire the incredible canyons that define this land.

  • Second sunset in Oman: tonight's hotel is in a magical location with an incredible view, ready for our second sunset in Oman.

A woman with long hair sits on a rocky ledge overlooking a vast, sunlit canyon under a clear blue sky.

Wadi Ghul: between sheer cliffs and breathtaking views

Up bright and early and on the road: today we go underground first, then up high!

  • Inside Al Hoota Cave: Al Hoota Cave is 4.5 km long and a cool 2 million years old, with 4 lakes home to rare species, including blind fish found only here in Oman. Our local guide fills us in on the cave's history while we soak in the rock formations, heads tilted back.

  • To the Grand Canyon of Arabia: we grab a bite and drive on to the Grand Canyon of Arabia, which gives its American sibling a serious run for its money.

  • Trek to the viewpoint: comfy shoes on for about 3 hours of trekking to the viewpoint: totally worth it!

In the evening, well-deserved relaxation at our beautiful accommodation.

A white tented camp sits in a fenced enclosure among rolling sand dunes under an orange sky.

Nizwa City and Bahla Fort

Up with the sun and straight to Nizwa, an Omani town that feels like the set of Aladdin!

  • Bahla Fort: we spend the morning exploring Bahla Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987.

  • Last wander in Nizwa: in the afternoon, one last wander around the city, then we hit the road towards one of the most unforgettable experiences of the trip.

The sand dunes

In the late afternoon, we head out for our night in the sandy desert.

  • Driving the dunes: at the last gas station we deflate the tires and start driving through the dunes: the best part!

  • Night at the Bedouin camp: dinner, sunset and stars in the middle of Wahiba Sands: simply indescribable!

A silhouetted person on a beach photographs the orange sunset over the ocean, with a boat on the horizon.

Camels, the sea, relaxation and... turtles

We're in the desert, so sleeping in is strictly forbidden: we wake up before the sun!

  • Sunrise from a dune: we're only here for today, so let's not miss this chance.

  • Recharging in Sur: then we're off to Sur, on the Persian Gulf, to recharge our batteries.

  • Ras Al Jinz Turtle Center: tonight we head to the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Center, time to meet some sea turtles!

A person in a black swimsuit wades through a clear stream inside a sunny, rocky canyon.

A dip in Wadi Shab, then back to the capital

We say goodbye to the turtles and head off to Wadi Shab, where, between inhospitable deserts and rugged rocks, Omani nature hides oases of peace and pure beauty.

  • A dip in the Bimmah Sinkhole: after a short walk we reach the Bimmah Sinkhole, arguably one of the most famous spots in all of Oman. The cool water is begging us to jump in, and we won't say no!

  • Back to Muscat: in the afternoon we head back to the capital, Muscat, to soak up the last moments and the country's unique culture.

  • Stroll and a bite: a stroll through the city and a local spot to grab a bite.

Exploring the capital

This morning we meet our local guide, who shows us around the city.

  • Mutrah port and fish market: we start at the fish market in the picturesque Mutrah port, where one of His Majesty the Sultan's luxurious yachts is docked.

  • Grand Mosque and Opera House: we can't miss the Grand Mosque and the Opera House, the country's main religious and cultural hubs.

  • Souvenirs in Mutrah souq: in the afternoon, the lively Mutrah souq along the Corniche, for last-minute souvenirs and local specialties.

  • Time for a boat trip? If there's time, we can even squeeze in a half-day boat trip: we can go snorkeling or, fingers crossed, spot some dolphins.

We wrap up in style with our final dinner in Oman, as a group!

Check-out and time to say goodbye

Sadly, it’s time to head home... catch you on the next WeRoad adventure!
