Oman 360° Collection: Wadi Shab, Jebel Shams & a Night in the Desert

This is a WeRoad Collection
A trip designed for ultimate comfort, with specially selected hotels and unique experiences.
Itinerary
A trip to Oman that's way more than a classic tour: a land of sea, desert and towering peaks, with ancient history and a mysterious, fascinating culture. The Sultanate of Oman is so much more than desert: there's the Grand Canyon of Arabia, hidden oases tucked between dunes and mountains, coastlines dropping into turquoise waters, fortresses, impregnable castles and charming rural villages.
We also discover Omani culture and its people, through grand mosques and vibrant markets full of local crafts, jewelry, essences and that iconic, fragrant incense. It's a country slowly opening up to the West, where hospitality is sacred: despite a slightly standoffish first impression, the Omani people are incredibly welcoming, with hearts of gold.

Hello, Oman!
Check-in: our adventure starts in Muscat
Flights to and from the destination are not included in the package, so you can decide where to depart from, at what time, and with whichever airline you prefer. This is to give you the utmost freedom of choice.
Day one in Muscat, one of the oldest cities in the Middle East: right from the start, it feels like an enchanted world!
Check-in and first steps: we check in at the hotel and take our first steps in Oman.
First sunset: we enjoy the sunset, perhaps near the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, whose white marble contrasts beautifully with the pink sky.
First dinner together: our first dinner in Oman and the official kick-off of our adventure!

Amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Hajar Mountains
On the road from Rustaq to the mountain tracks
New day, new horizons! We pick up our rental cars and already bid farewell to the capital.
The fort of Rustaq: first stop is Rustaq, a town in northern Oman, where we explore the fort and its breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Off-road in the Hajar Mountains: after lunch, the real highlight: 60 km of off-road driving through the Hajar Mountains, with plenty of chances to stop and admire the incredible canyons that define this land.
Second sunset in Oman: tonight's hotel is in a magical location with an incredible view, ready for our second sunset in Oman.

Jebel Shams: The Grand Canyon of Arabia
Wadi Ghul: between sheer cliffs and breathtaking views
Up bright and early and on the road: today we go underground first, then up high!
Inside Al Hoota Cave: Al Hoota Cave is 4.5 km long and a cool 2 million years old, with 4 lakes home to rare species, including blind fish found only here in Oman. Our local guide fills us in on the cave's history while we soak in the rock formations, heads tilted back.
To the Grand Canyon of Arabia: we grab a bite and drive on to the Grand Canyon of Arabia, which gives its American sibling a serious run for its money.
Trek to the viewpoint: comfy shoes on for about 3 hours of trekking to the viewpoint: totally worth it!
In the evening, well-deserved relaxation at our beautiful accommodation.

Nizwa, Bahla Fortress, and a night in the desert
Nizwa City and Bahla Fort
Up with the sun and straight to Nizwa, an Omani town that feels like the set of Aladdin!
Bahla Fort: we spend the morning exploring Bahla Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987.
Last wander in Nizwa: in the afternoon, one last wander around the city, then we hit the road towards one of the most unforgettable experiences of the trip.
The sand dunes
In the late afternoon, we head out for our night in the sandy desert.
Driving the dunes: at the last gas station we deflate the tires and start driving through the dunes: the best part!
Night at the Bedouin camp: dinner, sunset and stars in the middle of Wahiba Sands: simply indescribable!

Ras Al Jinz: let's hit the sea
Camels, the sea, relaxation and... turtles
We're in the desert, so sleeping in is strictly forbidden: we wake up before the sun!
Sunrise from a dune: we're only here for today, so let's not miss this chance.
Recharging in Sur: then we're off to Sur, on the Persian Gulf, to recharge our batteries.
Ras Al Jinz Turtle Center: tonight we head to the Ras Al Jinz Turtle Center, time to meet some sea turtles!

Wadi Shab and back to Muscat
A dip in Wadi Shab, then back to the capital
We say goodbye to the turtles and head off to Wadi Shab, where, between inhospitable deserts and rugged rocks, Omani nature hides oases of peace and pure beauty.
A dip in the Bimmah Sinkhole: after a short walk we reach the Bimmah Sinkhole, arguably one of the most famous spots in all of Oman. The cool water is begging us to jump in, and we won't say no!
Back to Muscat: in the afternoon we head back to the capital, Muscat, to soak up the last moments and the country's unique culture.
Stroll and a bite: a stroll through the city and a local spot to grab a bite.

Last day in Muscat
Exploring the capital
This morning we meet our local guide, who shows us around the city.
Mutrah port and fish market: we start at the fish market in the picturesque Mutrah port, where one of His Majesty the Sultan's luxurious yachts is docked.
Grand Mosque and Opera House: we can't miss the Grand Mosque and the Opera House, the country's main religious and cultural hubs.
Souvenirs in Mutrah souq: in the afternoon, the lively Mutrah souq along the Corniche, for last-minute souvenirs and local specialties.
Time for a boat trip? If there's time, we can even squeeze in a half-day boat trip: we can go snorkeling or, fingers crossed, spot some dolphins.
We wrap up in style with our final dinner in Oman, as a group!

Goodbye Oman, until next time!

I wanted to have a new adventure, something I perhaps never would have done. I made up my mind and did it, a few days before departure. I was lucky enough to meet nice people, I laughed, I had new experiences. In general, I can say that I had a good time!

I had very high expectations for Oman, while I was a bit worried about the group (this was my first WeRoad). Returning home I can say that it was exactly the opposite. Oman unfortunately didn't thrill me, while the group was perfect. We have already organised a reunion !!

Overall the travel experience was more than positive, a proactive and organised Travel Coordinator and fantastic travel companions. In Oman I appreciated the nature more than the visits to castles and forts as, having been recently restored, they have lost their charm, resulting in them being a bit too synthetic. I suggest to anyone choosing this trip to try and spend two nights in the desert, which is definitely better than Turtle Beach outside of the egg-laying season (Apr. - Oct.).

Overall a nice trip but with several aspects to improve and strengthen. Some notes: - the lack of a guide who spoke Italian strongly penalized the trip. The biggest regret concerns returning home without knowing much about Oman. The local guide, although he knew English, was not able to give us notions, context, and framing of the attractions visited. The problem was not related to the language but to his willingness to position himself as such, rather than as a simple companion. - itinerary: to be partially reviewed. Too many days spent between Al Batinah and Ad Dakhiliyah at the expense of much more interesting destinations. We considered the choice not to entrust professional drivers with the routes through the canyon at a sheer drop to be dangerous. Muscat: despite the two days planned, the visit to the city was sacrificed. The Opera was not included in the tour, the visit to the National Museum lasted less than half an hour due to the structure's closure. Fortresses and castles: we never had a guide on site. Free time to spend in the more comfortable structures was never contemplated. Faced with a significant expense for a hotel, I expect to be able to use all its benefits. Poorly calculated times: too many wake-up calls at dawn. It is true that it is a trip but everyone would have liked to have some time available for a bit of relaxation. - Travel Coordinator: he was in difficulty in managing a group with an average age significantly higher than his and specific needs. It would be better to evaluate the choice of the Travel Coordinator not only based on the destination but above all based on the Trip type. Although available, the Travel Coordinator was not up to the task of coordinating the group's needs. We learned important information regarding the program too late and this compromised the timing, leading to a waste of time that we could have used better. He did not succeed in managing the local guide, who often "imposed" his program at the last minute, giving us the impression of wanting to maneuver the agenda to his advantage. Restaurant reservations were not made in time, which forced us to fall back on restaurants that were not up to expectations. - Accommodation: not always up to the situation. Turtle Beach Resort: absolutely not suitable for a Collection. Old and dilapidated structure, without heating. The View: apart from the view, a very simple hotel, not to be considered as a premium structure. For these reasons, I evaluate the cost of the trip as decidedly overestimated compared to the result.

Oman is a splendid destination, but the organisation did not live up to expectations or the cost incurred. The absence of an Italian-speaking guide, poorly structured management by the Travel Coordinator, often poorly organised timings and some Accommodation not consistent with the “Collection” standard negatively affected the quality of the holiday and the serenity of the group. Rather than relaxing, the trip turned out to be tiring, causing discontent. A pity, because with better organisation it could have been an excellent experience.
