Itinerary

Six days from the rooftops of Casco Viejo to the overwater bars of Bocas del Toro: giant ships squeezing through the Panama Canal, then dolphins, starfish and cays that look like screensavers.

Panama is two trips in one, and we will take both. First the city: Panama City is skyscrapers on one side of the bay and the colonial streets of Casco Viejo on the other, a UNESCO old town of pastel balconies, plazas and rooftop bars with the best skyline view in Central America. We will watch giant cargo ships climb through the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal, one of the engineering wonders of the world, and walk the old town with a local guide who knows every story behind every façade.

Then a short flight takes us to the Caribbean side and to Bocas del Toro, an archipelago where life is lived on stilts and on boats. We will spend a full day island hopping between Dolphin Bay, the coral of Cayo Coral, the deserted Cayos Zapatilla and the starfish of Starfish Beach, and another between the waves of Red Frog Beach and the bars over the water of Bocas Town. Expect fresh coconut, reggae from the docks and nights that end with a swim under the stars. From canal to cays in less than a week: island time starts now!

Morning at the Miraflores Locks, when the big ships pass: from the terraces we will watch cargo ships rise and fall a few meters from us, and the visitor center will explain how the canal changed the world.

Casco Viejo walking tour

Afternoon with a local guide in Casco Viejo: Plaza de la Independencia, the Golden Altar, the French Plaza and the stories of pirates, gold and canal builders. Free evening between ceviche at the Mercado de Mariscos and the old town bars.

To the Caribbean

To the Caribbean

Morning flight (about 1 hour) to Bocas del Toro. The airport is in the middle of town, so in a few minutes we will be on Isla Colón, with its colorful wooden houses and bars on the water. Afternoon to explore, evening on a dock with our feet over the sea.
