Itinerary

Elephants wandering between baobabs, big cats hidden in the grass and a night under canvas in the Serengeti. Tanzania, we’re coming for you! Over eight days, we’ll explore Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, travelling together in safari 4x4s and discovering just how exciting an early alarm can be when there’s a game drive waiting.

And here’s something to look forward to beyond the wildlife: we’ll have our own private safari cook travelling with us throughout the camping adventure. From picnic lunches between game drives to freshly prepared dinners at camp, our included safari meals are taken care of. We get to spend more time enjoying the experience, swapping stories and getting to know the people around our table.

Starting in Arusha, we’ll head to Tarangire for our first safari, slow down in Mto wa Mbu and then cross the highlands into the Serengeti. An afternoon game drive, a night in the park and another safari the following morning will introduce us to its extraordinary landscapes and wildlife. Next comes a night on the Ngorongoro crater rim before an early descent into the crater itself. Back in Arusha, a village and coffee experience brings our adventure to a relaxed close.

This is a Backpack trip, with four nights in tents, shared campsite bathrooms, dusty roads and some early starts. Bring a little flexibility, a warm layer and your sense of adventure.

Our adventure begins in Arusha

Welcome to Tanzania! We arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport and make our own way to our accommodation in Arusha.

Today is about settling in and finding our feet. Depending on our arrival time, we can rest after the flight, take a first look around or find somewhere to grab a bite. We’ll meet our Group Leader and fellow WeRoaders, learn a few names and get ready for the adventure ahead.

Tomorrow, we meet our safari team and head out in search of wildlife. For now, let’s enjoy that lovely feeling of being somewhere completely new.

A day in the wild, followed by dinner with our private cook

Breakfast, bags packed and cameras charged: our safari starts today! We meet our local driver-guide and climb into our 4x4, with its pop-up roof and a window seat for everyone.

We’re heading to Tarangire National Park, known for its elephants and enormous baobab trees. As we follow the park’s tracks, we’ll look for giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and any predators that might be keeping a low profile. Our guide helps us read the landscape, but everyone gets to join the search. That shape moving behind the tree? Keep watching.

We have a picnic lunch to enjoy during the day before continuing our game drive. In the late afternoon, we leave the park and travel to Mto wa Mbu for our first night under canvas. This is also where we settle into one of our favourite parts of the trip: having a private safari cook with us.

Village life, local discoveries and a relaxed afternoon in Mto wa Mbu

Today we slow things down and take a break from game drives. We’re staying in Mto wa Mbu, with the chance to explore the town and surrounding countryside on an optional cultural excursion.

With a local guide, we can discover banana plantations and rice-growing areas, visit the market and meet local artisans and banana-beer producers. The excursion can be arranged on foot or by bicycle, subject to local confirmation. It’s an opportunity to ask questions and learn about everyday life here, beyond the national parks.

Prefer a quieter morning? We can also stay at camp and enjoy a little downtime.

Lunch is included back at the campsite, where our private cook continues to take care of our meals. The afternoon is free to relax before dinner together and another night in our tents. Tomorrow brings a change of scenery: we’re heading into the Serengeti.

An afternoon safari and a night beneath the African sky

Today we’re on the move, and the journey is part of the experience. After breakfast, we leave Mto wa Mbu, climb the Rift Valley escarpment and cross the Ngorongoro highlands towards the Serengeti.

Farmland and highland scenery gradually give way to the plains we’ve been imagining since we booked this trip. We stop for a picnic lunch before continuing with an afternoon game drive in the Central Serengeti, exploring the Seronera area with our driver-guide.

We’ll keep our eyes on the grass, the rocks and the branches overhead. This is big-cat country, but the wildlife sets the schedule. Sometimes the best approach is to sit quietly, look closely and see what unfolds.

Tonight, we camp in the Serengeti. Our private cook travels with us, so dinner is taken care of even here in the heart of our safari adventure.

Wildlife spotting in Seronera before we head to Ngorongoro

An early start? Absolutely worth it. We head out for a morning game drive in the Seronera River Valley, watching the landscape come to life in the changing light.

Lions, leopards and cheetahs live in this area, and our guide will help us look for signs of their presence. Between sightings, there’s plenty to take in: grazing herds, birdlife and plains that seem to go on forever.

After our morning safari, we return to camp for brunch prepared by our cook. Then we pack up and leave the Serengeti, travelling towards Ngorongoro with opportunities to spot wildlife along the way.

Our campsite tonight is on the Ngorongoro crater rim, where the air is noticeably cooler. Time to pull on that warm layer! While our private cook prepares dinner, we settle in after a day on the move.

A morning safari before our return to Arusha

fter an early breakfast at camp, we descend into Ngorongoro Crater for another memorable morning of wildlife spotting.

As we make our way down, the crater floor opens up beneath us. We spend the morning exploring with our driver-guide, looking for zebras, buffalo, wildebeest and predators. We’ll also keep an eye out for the elusive black rhino. As always, sightings depend on the day—and that uncertainty is part of what makes a safari so exciting.

We enjoy a picnic lunch in the crater before climbing back out and beginning the drive to Arusha.

Today brings the camping part of our adventure to a close. After four nights under canvas and meals taken care of by our private cook, we return to a hotel for a change of pace. This evening is free for a relaxed dinner, a proper look through our photographs and perhaps an early night.

A village experience and free time in Arusha

After breakfast, we head out for an included village and coffee experience, lasting approximately an hour and a half.

With a local farming family, we learn how coffee goes from plant to cup, discovering the preparation process and enjoying a freshly brewed taste. After days spent looking for wildlife, it’s a chance to focus on the people and daily life of the Arusha area.

The rest of the day is ours. We can explore the city, browse for souvenirs, arrange an optional activity or find a comfortable spot to relax.

For our final evening, we can head out for dinner together. By now, we’ve shared early alarms, bumpy tracks, camp meals and plenty of unforgettable moments. Choosing a favourite might take a while.

One last breakfast before we say goodbye

We enjoy our final breakfast, pack our bags and get ready to head home—or continue travelling.

After check-out, we make our own way to the airport. Eight days ago, we were arriving in Arusha and learning each other’s names. Now we’re leaving with shared safari stories, some well-travelled clothes and a camera roll that may take a while to sort through.

Time for goodbyes, a final group photo and promises to meet again. Until the next adventure, WeRoaders!
