Itinerary
Six days between the most refined Maya city ever built and the second largest barrier reef on the planet: Copán's carved stairways in the morning, free-flying macaws in the afternoon, and then three nights of Caribbean on the island of Roatán.
Almost nobody sells a short trip to Honduras, and that is exactly why we are going. We will start in Copán, the city the Maya themselves considered their artistic capital: a jungle valley full of carved stelae, a Hieroglyphic Stairway that tells the story of sixteen kings and tunnels that lead under the pyramids to temples hidden for centuries. In the afternoon the scarlet macaws, the national bird, will fly free above our heads at the Macaw Mountain sanctuary.
Then we will take a short flight to Roatán, the largest of the Bay Islands, where the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef starts a few meters from the beach. We will snorkel among coral gardens, turtles and parrotfish, spend a day on the white sand of West Bay and enjoy the laid back life of West End, with its wooden piers, reggae bars and sunsets over the water. In the evenings we will eat baleadas and fresh fish with our toes in the sand, and on the free day the boldest can take a boat to the Cayos Cochinos, a marine reserve of tiny islands and Garífuna fishing villages. History in the morning and Caribbean in the afternoon: this is Honduras in its best version!

Morning with a local archaeological guide among the stelae of the Great Plaza, the Hieroglyphic Stairway and the ball court. Then we will enter the tunnels under the Acropolis, where the Maya built new temples on top of the old ones like layers of an onion.
Macaw Mountain Bird Park
Afternoon at Macaw Mountain, a rescue and release center where scarlet macaws, toucans and owls live along a river in the forest. Some macaws are free and fly back to the ruins every day: it is one of the most photographed moments in the country.

Early start for the drive back to San Pedro Sula and a short domestic flight (about 45 minutes) to Roatán. In the afternoon we will settle in West End, take our first swim off the wooden docks and watch the sun go down over the water.

Snorkeling on the Mesoamerican Reef
1 night: 4th night: Roatán
Snorkel boat on the barrier reef
Snorkel boat on the barrier reef
By boat to the best snorkeling spots of the Roatán Marine Park: coral walls, sea turtles, rays and schools of tropical fish, in water so clear it looks fake. Divers can book a dive instead (Roatán is one of the cheapest places in the world to get certified).
Evening in West End
Free afternoon in the hammock and evening in the bars of West End, between fresh fish tacos and a Caribbean soundtrack.
West Bay: the beach day
1 night: 5th night: Roatán
Water taxi to West Bay
