Itinerary

Get ready for an experience of a lifetime in Morocco! We head out to discover the desert, the ancient Draa Valley and the colourful city of Marrakech. This trip will leave you completely speechless!

We uncover the local culture and landscapes, from the bustling cities to the magical desert. We spend a night in a tent and ride a dromedary (a very tall camel) through the sandy dunes of the Sahara. Along the way: kasbahs, red rock gorges and the Atlantic Ocean in Essaouira. Moroccan culture will enchant you with its history and its colours, as you walk through the busy city markets and admire the unmistakable architecture. Pack your bags and get ready for this incredible journey!

Check-in: our adventure starts in Marrakech

Roundtrip flights or transportation to reach the destination are not included in the package, so you can decide from where and when you want to leave! This gives you complete freedom of choice to adjust your travel itinerary to your needs.

Check-in to your hotel in Marrakech, and then it's time to start this trip right: with food, of course!

  • A first taste of Marrakech: we try out some specialities from the local cuisine and let the city's mix of flavours and aromas sweep us away.

Time to raise a glass!

A person from behind wearing a blue headscarf and a WeRoad backpack looks at a large mudbrick fortress under a clear blue sky.

Over the Atlas Mountains

Morocco's tour starts now! We collect our cars and off we go to... Ait Benhaddou!

  • Meeting our guide: our local guide joins us and tells us a bit more about this incredible country.

  • Into the desert: the best part of today is the drive, because once we leave the city behind, the Moroccan desert surrounds us.

  • Over the Atlas: we cross a mountain pass with incredible views of the Atlas Mountains, where, unbelievable as it might be, we may even spot some snow!

You never forget your first kasbah

We're finally in Ait Benhaddou, the first kasbah of this trip: a fortified city that seems to blend in with its surroundings. It's one of the nine sites in Morocco that UNESCO has included in its World Heritage Sites, with tall towers and buildings made of organic materials, including the red mud that gives them their characteristic colour.

  • Exploring the kasbah: we take our time to explore the city before a well-deserved dinner.

A WeRoad group trip riding camels in a single file line across orange desert dunes under a clear sky.

Roses and gorges

We drive several miles today, so take in the view outside the car window! We say goodbye to Ait Benhaddou and set off towards Merzouga, today's final destination.

  • The city of roses: we travel through El Kelaa M'Gouna, where they produce incredible scents and perfumes.

  • Through the canyons: then through the Gorges of Todra and Dades, stunning places where walls of red rock rise for miles, creating a real canyon.

Sahara, here we are!

On the road we see many other kasbahs and ksour (castles), and we'll surely stop to appreciate the famous Moroccan hospitality.

  • By 4x4 from Erfoud: in Erfoud we leave our cars and get on the 4x4 that takes us to the Sahara desert.

  • Hello, camels! We reach Merzouga, surrounded by high sand dunes, and change our mode of transport again.

  • The Sahara at sunset: the camels take us to explore the Sahara at sunset, then we spend the night in a tented camp under the starry sky.

A WeRoad group trip stands with their arms around each other on a sand dune, overlooking a vast desert at sunset.

Desert sunrise and a green valley

We wake up in the middle of the desert after a spectacular night. Early starters can set an alarm before dawn to watch the sand dunes “catch fire” in the first rays of sunshine!

  • On to Tazzarine: after a good breakfast we set off to reach Tazzarine.

  • Into the Draa Valley: then we explore the incredible Draa Valley, with completely new landscapes once again.

As you can guess, the valley is crossed by the Draa river, which makes it rich in palm trees and lush vegetation.

Relax in Agdz

Along the way we find amazing kasbahs that we can stop to visit: Morocco truly is full of surprises!

  • Lunch in a kasbah: we stop in one of them for lunch, then carry on to Agdz, a town still in the Draa valley, on the slopes of the Jebel Kissane in the Atlas Mountains.

  • Afternoon in Agdz: a relaxing afternoon exploring our surroundings.

  • Evening tagine: in the evening, if we haven't already, it's time to taste a delicious tagine!

A man takes a selfie with a WeRoad group trip as they pose and smile on large sand dunes in a desert.

A miniature Marrakech

Good morning Morocco! It's a new day for us WeRoaders to discover the hidden beauties of this country.

  • Off to Taroudant: this morning we head to Taroudant, in the fertile valley of the Souss, surrounded by the mountains of the High Atlas and Anti Atlas.

  • Lost in the souks: it feels like a miniature Marrakech, so it won't take long to explore. We can spend the morning getting lost among its souks, the perfect time to buy some locally handmade souvenirs.

Next stop, Agadir

We then continue towards Taliouine, considered the African center for the production of saffron.

  • Lunch with saffron: we just have to stop here for lunch and taste some dishes made with "the king of spices".

  • West to the coast: then we head west, say goodbye to the inland and finally reach the coast: about three hours of beautiful scenery.

  • Evening in Agadir: later in the afternoon we arrive in Agadir, with time to explore the town and find a little restaurant for a bite to eat.

A WeRoad group trip in wetsuits posing with surfboards on a sunny beach, with the ocean in the background.

The city of surfers

After a hearty breakfast, there's just enough time for a walk on the promenade in Agadir.

  • North along the coast: we head north following the coast: today we enjoy the view of the Atlantic Ocean!

  • Mint tea in Taghazout: we stretch our legs in Taghazout, since the 70s the top destination for surfers and those who love freedom, with just enough time to drink a good mint tea.

Then off we go again. Next stop: Essaouira!

Walking around Essaouira

We arrive in Essaouira and have a free afternoon to enjoy this town overlooking the ocean. Here is the famous Medina on the sea, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an example of the European military architecture of the eighteenth century in North Africa.

  • Around the Medina: we explore the Medina and some other neighbourhoods near the centre.

  • Local flavours: then it's time for typical local dishes: on the menu tonight is the delicious harira soup, made with chickpeas and lentils.

A person wearing a yellow hooded robe walks down a busy market street with a cart of oranges and a minaret in the distance.

Fancy a beach day?

What better way to enjoy the last few hours in Essaouira than with a quad excursion?

  • Quad across the dunes: we put on our helmets, jump on a quad with our now most faithful travel companion and cross the vast expanse of dunes of Essaouira beach.

  • Picnic by the sea: we end with a picnic overlooking the sea and relax before heading back towards Marrakech.

Let's head back to Marrakech

In the afternoon we get comfortable in our cars for the last stretch of our journey discovering Morocco.

  • Back to Marrakech: the drive back to Marrakech takes about three hours: let's enjoy these last moments on the Moroccan roads.

After so many days outside the city, the chaos of Marrakech will be a bit of a shock. But that's what Morocco is all about: many different aspects to discover every day!

Numerous illuminated, ornate metal lanterns hanging in a narrow, dimly lit market alleyway.

From Jemaa el Fna to Bahia Palace

A full day to explore and discover Marrakech, starting from Jemaa el Fna Square, the centre of the city.

  • Browsing the souk: the square is home to a large open-air market, called souk, where we can buy soft fabrics, tasty dates and fragrant spices.

  • Henna or palm reading? We can have our body decorated with henna or our palm read by a fortune teller.

  • Spices and a palace: then on to Place des Epices, the spice square, and Bahia Palace, a true masterpiece of traditional Moroccan architecture.

Our last Moroccan night

Our last evening here: let's treat ourselves to a refreshing mint tea on one of the cafés' terraces around the main square, while we enjoy a beautiful sunset.

  • Farewell dinner: a dinner packed full of tasty Moroccan delicacies.

  • One last stroll: a final walk around the bubbling streets of Marrakech.

A WeRoad group trip sits on a blanket on a sand dune, watching the sunset over a vast desert landscape.

Check-out and goodbyes

Check out and farewell! We have to say goodbye: see you on the next WeRoad adventure!

My WeRoad Morocco tour was absolutely incredible! From the hot air balloon ride watching the sunrise over stunning landscapes to exploring vibrant cities like Essaouira and Marrakech, every moment was unforgettable. Huge shoutout to our coordinator Marta, who was proactive, communicative, and added loads of humor to the trip. And to our local guide Youssef, his knowledge and passion for the country's culture made the experience even more enriching. But what truly made the trip special was the group, we had so much fun exploring together! Thanks to WeRoad for an unforgettable adventure!

I loved that We had a mixed group with solo travellers from all over the world around same ages. A great way to meet new friends! Overall together with the group was much fun. It was nice to have a local guide to tell more about culture and history. I Would've wanted more time in Ait Benhaddou and Merzouga to enjoy it more and have a bit more free time. It was long days in the van on the road. Could skip Agadir and have more time in Taghazout and Essaouira instead. We did a few extra activities that was not included such as hot air balloon, which was a 120Eur extra and one of the highligts of this trip except for the desert which was my other favorite. Food was an experience itself, lots of Tajine and around 12-13 Eur for a lunch. Unfortunately for the vegans/vegetarians in the group was not much options. And its hard to accommodate gluten/lactosefree diets in general. Cooking class in Agdz was a fun add-on aswell. Local women teaching how to make a Tajine and wood oven bread.

Our weroad guide was amazing. The trip thought could of been planned a bit different. Didnt really enjoy Agadir. All we had time for there was dinner. And then we left early next day again. Loved Taghazout, would of loved to stay there for a night. Maybe surf lesson there? Didn't like the scenery on the dirty beach when on the quad, and end this experience with a nice picnic overlooking the sea. (Picknick was awful). Soggy fries and weird sandwich. Bun with rice potatoes and sauce. Overall a bit stressful trip. As a vegetarian it's really hard to find good food. The "home cooked meal" at our last day was only potatoes and couscous. I guess I didnt go because of the food experience but still. Our guide was so heartwarming and really cared for everyone. Had some games in the van and was a good laugh. Always so happy. For next time I do wish a more specific timeline one night before what to expect and when.

Thanks Maria, we're sorry about the rushed Agadir stop, the picnic and the lack of vegetarian food. We've taken note, and we're glad about the laughs.

Fantastic trip and a great introduction to WeRoad. The itinerary is fast-paced and packs a lot in, but the variety of experiences made it incredibly rewarding. Our Tour Leader was exceptional, consistently going above and beyond to accommodate individual requests and manage challenges with patience, flexibility and professionalism. Great group dynamic, excellent local experiences, and I’d happily travel with WeRoad again.
