Which part of Madeira should you choose?
Funchal and the South Coast
The center: Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo
The island's mountainous heart is the perfect spot for a high-altitude trekking trip. The trail to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak on the island, kicks off from Pico do Arieiro: get ready for tunnels carved straight into the rock and a sea of clouds beneath your feet.
The North: Porto Moniz and Santana
The levadas and the laurisilva
Levadas are ancient irrigation channels built to bring water from the mountains to the fields—and today, we hike right alongside them. The laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most stunning stretches you'll find. It’s the perfect spot for a trekking adventure through waterfalls and tunnels.
When’s the best time to visit Madeira?
You can visit Madeira year-round: the climate is mild even in winter, with temperatures around 18-20°C (64-68°F) in Funchal.
In summer, it hits 25-27°C (77-81°F) on the south coast. If you're into hiking, spring and summer offer the most comfortable trails, while in fall you can explore with fewer crowds.
At the end of the year, Funchal hosts one of the most famous New Year's Eve fireworks displays in Europe.
What to see in Madeira
In Madeira, the mountains dive straight into the sea: think levadas and epic trails like the one connecting Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, the sheer cliff viewpoint at Cabo Girão, the natural pools of Porto Moniz, and the dramatic Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula.
And then there's Funchal, the farmers' market, and poncha – the local drink made with cane rum and lemon.
