2-week itinerary in Japan

Tokyo neon, a Hakone or Fuji detour, Kyoto temples and plenty of noodles: a 14-day route you can follow day by day.

The Temple of Heaven in Beijing

From emperors praying for a good harvest to locals playing cards in the park: here's why this corner of Beijing still feels lived in, not roped off.

The best places to visit in Asia

One country won't cover it, and seven barely do. Temples at first light, jungle rivers and neon crossings, and which of them we'd fly for first.

When to go to Asia

The best season depends on the region, so match the month to the corner of Asia you have in mind. Japan is popular in spring, when cherry blossoms bloom roughly from late March to April, and in fall for the foliage. Mainland Southeast Asia is drier roughly from November to March, while trekking in Nepal and travel across Central Asia are usually best in spring and fall.

Entry rules and health

You will need a valid US passport, and many countries require a visa or an electronic authorization, with rules that differ by destination and change often. Check the State Department travel advisories (travel.state.gov) before you book. For vaccines and health precautions, talk to your doctor or a travel clinic.

What to pack

Light, breathable layers work best in the heat, with a rain jacket for sudden downpours. Many temples ask visitors to cover their shoulders and knees, so a scarf or light shirt is worth carrying, and slip-on shoes save time because you will take them off often. A small daypack and a refillable water bottle are useful almost everywhere.
