How to drive Route 66

Diners, neon motels and half-empty towns: the route, the stops, the cost and the days you'll need to drive Route 66 without rushing it.

Geysers, red rock canyons and granite cliffs: 14 parks worth a trip, from Yellowstone to Acadia, whether it's your first or fifth.

Where to see fall colors in Canada

Larch valleys in the Rockies, maple forests in Québec and a Cabot Trail drive: the best parks, routes and when to go for peak color.

When to go to North America

National parks are less crowded in spring and fall, while summer is the busiest season. Parts of the Southwest, like the inner Grand Canyon, get very hot in summer. The Canadian Rockies and Alaska are best roughly from June to September, and fall foliage in New England usually peaks roughly from late September to mid-October.

Park etiquette and wildlife

Stay on marked trails, store food as the park requires and keep a safe distance from wildlife, including bison, elk and bears. Follow the posted distance rules, since they differ from park to park. Weather and altitude shift quickly in the mountains, so carry layers and plenty of water, and keep a rain jacket in your daypack even on sunny mornings.

Documents

Trips within the US don't require a passport, but you will need valid photo ID. For Canada or Mexico, bring your US passport and check current entry requirements on travel.state.gov. Rules can differ depending on how you cross the border, so confirm what applies to your route well before you go.
