Where to spend New Year's Eve in Europe

Fireworks, rooftop views and midnight toasts: here are ten places to see in the new year, and how to pick the vibe that suits you.

The best road trips in Europe

From coastal switchbacks to mountain passes to towns you find only by pulling over: we've mapped the routes worth building a whole trip around.

Best European cities to visit in fall

Golden parks, early sunsets and museum afternoons: we've picked ten cities that get better once the summer queues are gone.

When to go to Europe

Late spring and early fall are roughly the sweet spot, with pleasant temperatures and smaller crowds than in July and August. Southern Europe can get very hot in midsummer, while the Alps are best for hiking from roughly June to September. Winter works well for Christmas markets and museum-heavy city breaks.

Entry rules for US travelers

You will need a valid US passport, and requirements differ by country. Check current ETIAS and Schengen entry rules before you book. Countries outside the Schengen area, such as the UK and Ireland, have their own rules, so check each stop on your route, and read the State Department travel advisories (travel.state.gov) for every country you visit.

What to pack

Broken-in walking shoes matter more than anything else: old towns come with cobblestones, hills and plenty of stairs. Add a light jacket for evenings and a scarf or shawl to cover your shoulders in churches and cathedrals. A refillable water bottle and a small day bag cover most days.
